From individuals to winners as a team: a lesson in resilience, trust, and showing up. This past week, I had the privilege of competing in the 45+ Masters Division at the US Open Volleyball Championship — our team’s very first time playing together. No coach. Just a shared love of the game and a willingness to give it everything. It wasn’t easy. Early losses. Unfamiliar rhythm. Moments of frustration. But adversity has a way of revealing character. Halfway through the tournament, a fellow Canadian — a stranger to most of us — offered to coach. With every match, we found more trust in each other, more clarity in our roles, more joy in the process. We kept learning, kept pushing, and kept showing up. In our final match, we faced a team from Venezuela who had beaten us in straight sets earlier in the tournament. This time, we came back stronger — and won. We left with a Bronze Flight win and something even more powerful: the reminder that progress isn’t always about being perfect — it’s about believing in what you can become when you persevere together.
