I used to hate cold calls but its the fastest way to book meetings. It works and you can now steal my framework for free💡

I also know I'm not alone in this. The thing with cold calls is:

❌ rejections hit instantly and they hurt. Unlike emails where you just get ghosted.

❌ it takes deliberate practice to get good at cold calls. Role plays are usually done in a team setting and no one likes looking bad in front of their peers

❌ you have to be quick on your feet to handle the unexpected. Giulio Segantini shared a recording last week where the prospect said "I'd have to drop dead before I consider [cold call training]". Savage.. 😄

I've been testing out my framework against Hyperbound's army of AI buyers and I'm amazed by how realistic their bots are.

💡 They want to learn from people they trust. Not from someone who wants to sell to them.

Among the top business trends this year are:

🟢 Influencer marketing
🟢 Buyer enablement

And all three of these points help customers buy the way they want.

YouTube and LinkedIn are the only channels I focus on.

I give away everything I know for free. Then sell the execution.

If I had to learn to sell all over again this is what I’d start with and why:

1️⃣ learning to ask the right questions

Learning to ask good questions is how I landed my first job in tech sales. It’s a must for anyone who wants to succeed. 

I recommend starting with the book “The Art of Asking” by Terry J. Fadem

2️⃣ mastering the buyer’s world

When starting out I thought sales was about convincing people to buy your product.

While there is some level of convincing, good sales reps know that without pain there is no benefit.

Your job is to uncover pains and challenges even if the prospect might not be aware that any exists. Then you educate on ways they can solve that pain.

You can only do that if you immerse yourself in the buyer’s world and know their “jobs to be done”

3️⃣ writing good copy 

I hope this point finds you well.

The best sales reps are masters when it comes to getting people interested.

This skill is key to booking meetings, selling the vision, and closing deals.

They’ll make their way into your social media posts, your emails, cold calls, and even demos.

4️⃣ unselling

I missed my first promotion because I wasn’t selective with my time.

I was wasting my days on opps that were long-shots or were someone’s pet project.

I’ve learned to be sceptical of any opportunity, especially when they come inbound.

Unselling is when you’re bringing up reasons your buyer shouldn’t buy your product. It helps me disqualify prospects on the very first call I have with them.

If you were right about being sceptical you’ll get your time and focus back.

If you’re wrong, the buyer will bring up all the right reasons they need you and will end up selling the product for you.

5️⃣ building strong champions

Sales reps are top of professions people distrust. Shocker, right?

Now imagine two buying scenarios:

In the first one you as the sales rep presents a business case for why the buyer needs your product to deliver the project.

In the second one, the same deck is used, but your champion is the one presenting it.

Which one is the decision maker more likely to believe?

(Spoiler: it’s the second one)

The hard truth is that it’s buyers who close deals today, not sales reps. The best we can do is enable buyers and make it easy to choose your solution over others.

And no - the first person who reaches out isn’t your champion.

Neither are people enthusiastic about your product.

A champion is someone with incentive, intent, and influence. Someone who can get things done internally.

10 common cold call mistakes and how to avoid them:

❌ Starting the call with “how are you (doing today)?”
✅ Avoid signs like this that scream “this is a cold call” by stating why you called 

❌ Getting straight to the pitch/monologue after introducing yourself
✅ Every cold call is an interruption. Get your prospect’s permission to continue first 

❌ Asking your prospects “Is this a bad time?” after your intro
✅ Asking this is good when following up with buyers but too generic for cold calls 

❌ Asking to confirm who you’re talking to by saying “is this (name)?” 
✅ Unless you’re calling a central number asking for someone specific and saying “I’m looking for (name)” you should know who you’re calling and why. Say their name confidently. If you’ve got the wrong number, they’ll tell you. 

❌ Practicing cold calling on live prospect calls 
✅ There’s a quote by Sun Tzu in the Art of War that goes “Sweat more during peace, bleed less during war”. Same with cold calls - you want to practice in a safe environment 

❌ Letting go of prospects when timing is off
✅ Get their permission to follow up at a later time and/or send them useful materials 

❌ Using the same generic messaging for everyone
✅ Similar to cold emails you want to customise your message to the Persona. 

❌ Trying to conduct the discovery during the cold call 
✅ Cold calls are always an interruption so schedule a meeting where your prospect has committed to staying on the call. 

❌ Task switching after every call 
✅ You’ll get more dials in if you batch your tasks. Prep your list, enrich your contacts, research them, call them, then do admin when the power hour is over. 

❌ Calling different Persona types in the same power hour block 
✅ Treat your power hours like a campaign so you get more calls done with fewer mistakes. Each power hour is focused on one insight/trigger of one Persona

LinkedIn released a new AI feature for Sales Navigator recently that's supposed speed up your Account research. I'm gonna walk you through it using Kong Inc. as an example.

It's still in Beta and has its limitations, but you need to lead with a point of view in your outreach if you want to get a reply.

Else you get lost in a sea of AI generated spam emails.

But personalisation takes research, and research normally takes a long time so I wanted to take it for a spin.

💡 In this video I'll walk you through what you can use Account IQ for and what limitations to keep in mind when using it to research your accounts.

You know how you can segment your sales outreach into separate lists? You've probably done this already for "contacts with and without phone numbers". But what if you could do the same with social touches?
