I'm changing my gender.

It's official.

For one week on LinkedIn anyway...

I got involved in the debate about women's content being suppressed on LinkedIn last week.

At first I put it down to the general drop in post reach everyone seems to be seeing right now.

However, that view was challenged by several women reporting that when they changed their gender to male their reach dramatically increased.

Now, I know this isn't exactly a scientific experiment, but I couldn't say no when so many women were asking me to try it myself.

So here I am.

All good things must come to an end

Yes, we're ending our business relationship...

I've known Tina for 7 years and worked with her on and off for 5.

We have a lot in common and we've become great friends.

Now we're going in different directions. Which makes me sad.

But I'm also excited - for both of us!

Tina wants to do something that lights up her soul, and I have no doubt what she's working on is going to be incredible. (Watch that space!)

And I want to do what I do best - helping people with their LinkedIn & business growth strategy. 

So we're both doubling down on what works for each of us.

It doesn't mean I'll never work with Tina again. I'm sure I will. We'll always have a connection and I know we'll collaborate on projects in future.

But now it's time for each of us to spread our wings.

Watch this space - things are evolving and I can't wait to share what's coming up.

My workshop last month was a complete disaster.

And 100 people watched it happen.

- The reminder emails were all 1 hour early
- Everyone's name was 'Adrian Shiel'
- Some people got locked out

But every single person stayed.

They engaged. Asked questions. Took notes.

Because the content delivered even when the tech didn't.

What's your worst public event screw-up? Please share 🤓

I changed my gender on LinkedIn for one week.

Here's what happened...

...unfortunately the opposite of what I hoped.

Profile views  +115% 🔺🟢
Post impressions +60% 🔺🟢
Profile appearances +137% 🔺🟢
Newsletter article views -70% 🔻🔴

But there's an explanation for all of it.

My impressions went up because of two posts. both related to this topic, which obviously is hot right now.

They didn't go viral but they did get 10s of 1,000s of views.

And personally I don't like it when that happens. I'm here for business, not validation from people I don't know.

When I filter out those posts, I didn't see any real change.

So, what's the conclusion?

1. Talking about gender bias increases impressions?
2. It's hard to prove gender bias either way
3. My data is practically unusable
4. We need a 'scientific' test

Having said all that, I still think this was worthwhile, even though I had to put a very embarrassing photo on my profile of me portrayed as a woman by AI (but with stubble).

If nothing else, it has shone a light on what many women are experiencing.

And hopefully, the more people talk about this, the more LinkedIn will look into it and make sure its AI is not biased by gender or any other differences between human beings.

Is anybody else up for testing this? Especially men...?

LinkedIn is changing fast. Don't get left behind.

Here's what I'm doing about it...

People are fed up with AI generated posts, engagement pods and DM pitch slaps.

Trust is at an all time low.

Now with the new Boost feature, impressions have never been so low.
But I don't care.

Because I know the real value on LinkedIn is networking and relationship building.

So in 2026, here's what I'll be doing:

- Writing my own posts (no AI)
- Creating an email/web newsletter
- Repurposing it as a LinkedIn newsletter
- Reaching out to connect with more people
- Creating lead magnets that help solve problems
- Running live events to show people how to do all this

This week I had 3 no-shows and a cancellation

The annoying part is I know how to prevent this

But first, here's why it happened:

1. People could book calls 7 days out
2. SMS reminders were too early
3. Generic email reminders
4. No contact before call

I knew the importance of all these things (and more), but I just haven't updated it yet with everything I've been busy working on.

But there's nothing more frustrating than a no-show or unexplained last-minute cancellation.

And that's not me pointing the finger.

I take full responsibility for it.

So I'm making this a priority, because time is precious.

Here's what I'm going about it: 

1. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝟯 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁
   People 'go cold' over time. 
   Decisions are always emotional, including bookings.
   Emotions fade with time so decisions change.
   
2. 𝗦𝗠𝗦 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹
   People forget things. We're just humans.
   SMS is way more likely to get attention than an email.
   It's proven to increase show-up rate by 20-30%
   
3. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀
   Not too intrusive - 24 hours, 1 hour, 10 minutes.
   Don't hound people. Just gently remind them.
   Make the message feel personal with first names etc.
   
4. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲
   This acts as another reminder.
   It helps you stay relevant in their mind.
   You can ask questions to get a head start.
   
5. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘂𝗽 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
   Get them to do some homework before the call.
   This increases engagement and commitment.
   Create FAQs to pre-handle objections
   
This is all 'Sales Call 101' stuff, of course. But I don't see many people implement it, especially number 5.

It's not hard if you know how.

Lead generation is dying on LinkedIn.

Unless you do this.

Your content gets 20% of the reach it used to. Stop complaining about it.

Do these 2 things:

𝟭. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁. 
• Tell compelling stories. 
• Write stuff people will read.
• Be the go-to expert in your field. 
• STOP using AI to write all your posts.

𝟮. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. 
• Solve their problems.
• Stop writing it like a CV
• Write for your ideal audience.
• Stop bragging about achievements.
• Get viewers to take one high-value action.

I've been watching this slow-motion train wreck for months now. Creators pumping out AI-generated posts, praying for engagement, wondering why their 10K followers aren't converting.

Meanwhile, the smart ones are already building bridges off this platform.

Look, I love LinkedIn. Built my entire business here. But relying ONLY on LinkedIn's algorithm to deliver your message is like building your house on rented land.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

Here's what's actually working in 2025:

• LinkedIn newsletters (direct to inbox, no algorithm BS)
• Lead magnets that capture emails immediately
• Moving conversations to your own email list
• Building actual relationships in the DMs
• Creating value outside the feed

If someone only knows you from your LinkedIn posts, you don't really have them as a lead.

They're LinkedIn's audience. Not yours.

I learned this the hard way when my reach dropped 80%. All those "engaged followers"? I couldn't reach them anymore.

But the people on my email list. The ones who downloaded my training. The ones I actually talk to in messages.

They're still there. Still buying. Still referring.

Your LinkedIn profile should be a funnel, not a destination. Every piece of content, every interaction, should move people one step closer to YOUR ecosystem.

Because when LinkedIn changes the rules again (and they will), you want to still have a business.

I forgot to give 47 people something that helped someone else get 1,000+ newsletter subscribers.

In less than 7 days

And I feel bad about it.

Last week I ran a workshop on LinkedIn newsletters. 

Tech failed spectacularly (everyone was called 'Adrian Shiel' 😅), but people still got results.

(Now she's over 1,000)

From ZERO. In a week.

But here's what's bothering me...

A ton people signed up for the replay but I completely forgot to send them the resources. The templates, the silver bullet strategy, the repurposing framework - everything Lisa used.

They got the recording but not the actual tools.

People are freaking out about the boost feature. 

But I’m laughing about it. Why? 

Because I know the real money on LI is in the DMs.

So I'm not that bothered by declining impressions.

People come here and post AI generated 'meh' posts and think that's going to get them clients.

But what gets overlooked is that it doesn't matter how good your content is (well, I guess good content helps 🤓).

If you don't know how to network and build relationships, it's always going to be a struggle.

Because it comes down to this:

People do business with people they trust.

So if you just focus on building trust, it will help your business grow.

And in my opinion there's no better place to do that than LinkedIn.

And I couldn't be happier about it.

Lisa attended my LinkedIn newsletter workshop last month. 

Within 24 hours she had 625 subscribers. 

Within a week she broke 1,000.

And, I literally just checked and she's now at 1,306.

Meanwhile, I'm still fiddling with my welcome sequence, tweaking my opt-in page design, and overthinking whether my lead magnet PDF needs another revision.

She just... started.

No fancy automation. 
No perfect funnel. 
No hesitation.

She literally just created the newsletter, published it and told people about it.

I spent three weeks building the "perfect" email sequence. She spent three hours writing her first edition and hitting publish.

Guess who's actually building their list?

This is the curse of being 'the expert'. You know all the ways to optimise. All the best practices. All the things that could make it 1% better.

So you wait. 
You tweak. 
You perfect.

Meanwhile, someone who just learned the basics yesterday is already getting results.

The gap between 0 and 1 is infinitely bigger than the gap between 1 and 100.

Starting beats strategising. Every single time.
