It took me 11 years to start my first business. 

And I didn't do it alone.


I grew up in Casablanca, Morocco.

Everyone hustles their way, but the norm is: study well and get a good job.
 
- My parents come from a modest background
- They were taught to make their way by studying and working up their career

And they did well. So that's what they taught us too.

The plan was always:
- Go to school 
- Get a good degree
- Find a job that pays your bills 
- And don’t move
 
While I followed this, I didn't feel this was right.

When I signed my first job at Google, everyone around me was proud of me.

"You're set for a great career" I head often.

And to be fair I still hear people asking "why did you quit Google?"

The answer is simple:
- Freedom of time
- Freedom of choice
- Pushing my way through by owning equity

I come from a middle class family. Investing was never a big thing.

It was always about saving.

So how do I own equity? By building and valuing my own.

I don't disregard investing, in fact I already have and will continue doing so.
 
But I realised that:
- If I know how to sell
- If I know how to build

Not starting a business would be a big mistake.

So fast forward, at age 29 I started The Scalelab. 
(11 years after highschool end)

At age 32 I started Scalelist.

Both with Arnaud Renoux who shares very similar values as I do.

Every day I wake up to changes and growth. Our own, as well as our clients.

Every day I think: this is just the start.
 
One seed you plant, then water, will grow into a tree that blossoms and sheds other seeds.

My roots outgrew the pot I grew up in. Creating a first business was like repotting these roots in a new pot.

I firmly believe we will live in a world where everyone will own their own equity.

How to generate 471 warm leads with outbound

7 years ago I landed in Hong Kong with a backpack and no job. Only the hope for a better future.

- I was born and raised in Casablanca, Morocco 
- My father is Moroccan, my mother is Austrian
- I’m the 2nd of 3 boys
- After high school I studied in France
- Did an exchange semester in 2013 in Hangzhou China which totally opened my eyes
- When I left, I promised myself I would come back
- My first job was at Google in Dublin
- I then joined Web Summit for 2 years
- I went to Hong Kong for the first time in 2016 for the RISE conference
- Left my life in Europe end of 2016 to find my way to Asia

Why Hong Kong ?

All things that I was looking for and felt my future should be made of.

How I find leads on LinkedIn Sales Navigator Automatically

5 clear learnings about outbound sales that led me to start my outbound sales agency The Scalelab with Arnaud Renoux 4 years ago.

Most sales confuse outbound with outreach.

Outreach is the action of reaching out to prospects.

Outbound is the practice of acquiring customers proactively.

While outreach is part of it, it's not the only action. It includes:
- Clear understanding of one's ideal customer profiles
- Clear branding and content to serve these ICPs
- The ability to find and score ICPs before engaging them
- Engaging leads (outreach)
- Nurturing them
- Closing
- Capturing references and referrals

With sales automations and AI anyone can send thousands of emails with a template drafted by chatGPT.

But there's a difference between reaching out and getting a response.

When I started my first sales job 10 years ago I thought sales was a matter of:
- Finding leads
- Contacting them
- Closing deals

But the reality was different. Finding leads and contacting them is the easy part.

Plus:
Was I even finding the right people? 
Was I contacting them the right way?
Did I even care to nurture them?

When I started seeing outbound not just as outreach but as an entire strategy, I was able to:
- Cleary understand who I was serving and what problems they had
- Find the right leads, dismiss those that weren't a fit
- Address the right leads with content that made their life easier
- Build honest and valuable relationships
- Close more deals
- Get references and referrals

Learning to say no...



4 years ago when I started The Scalelab with Arnaud Renoux we were all up for the grind and doing everything that was coming our way.

Doing things that didn't scale, to learn as we were getting paid.

That's how we started.

And this meant saying yes to 90% of what was coming to us (unless this had nothing to do with our expertise).

While we learnt a good deal. It also meant we were all over the place.

Over time, as we grew our client base. It was evident we would not be able to scale like this.

And when you build the habit of saying yes. Starting to say no is even more difficult.

Saying yes is limiting because it:
- Can put you in a situation you don't want to be in
- Takes away your focus
- You can't become an expert of everything
- Your offering is a bit of everything
- And so is your team

So it was evident. If we wanted to scale, we just had to start saying no.

Because saying no meant:
1/ Protecting our time
2/ Knowing where we wre heading to (and where we should not head to)
3/ We are authentic
4/ We can focus on one thing
4/ We can scale it

We moved from spreading ourselves too thin and doing an ok job at it.

To doing 1 thing, with the right people, for the right companies and doing it right.

I now love to say no and I'm consistently applying it to business and all other parts of my life too.

No, no, no. Just embracing the no.
