Love this new way of thinking about productivity.

It’s from Laura Mae Martin’s new book UPTIME.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by to-do lists, this method focuses on creating "loops" to capture, create, consolidate, and close your tasks.

Here's a breakdown of the Uptime method:

Calm: Intentional rest and downtime initiate the opening of new loops.

Create: This could be anything from a sudden inspiration, birthing a new idea, or a reminder of a task you've been meaning to do.

Capture: Having an idea doesn’t mean it’s the right time to act. Write down the new loop in a place where you'll see it when it's time to take action. This could be a physical notebook, a digital to-do list, or project management software.

Consolidate: Organize your to-dos by grabbing things from your capture list and assigning them to specific weeks or days. Some may even need to be tagged for further out — a future month or quarter.

Close: Complete the action needed to move that idea to the next step or final stage. Check the box, send the email, schedule the meeting, you get the idea!

This cyclical approach helps you stay focused and make progress on your most important tasks, allowing you to capture ideas, organize them without judgment, and close the loop by taking action — all while staying calm and focused.

Here's why loops can be so beneficial:

Reduced Cognitive Load: No more holding onto fleeting ideas that clutter your mind. Capture them in your loop system and free up brain space for focused work.

Flexibility: Loops are adaptable. Need to revisit an old idea? Simply add it back into the loop. Did a new priority emerge? Loop it in and adjust as needed.

Prioritization: As you consolidate your loops, you naturally prioritize by assigning tasks to specific days or weeks based on importance and urgency.

Satisfaction of Completion: Closing the loop on a task brings a sense of accomplishment, motivating you to tackle the next one.

People talk a lot about downtime. What they should be talking about is UPTIME.

Her intention was to relax and finish watching one of her favorite series. Her action was to comfortably enjoy it all from the couch without interruption.
