How I think about life:

When I was 13, my Dad put me on “suicide watch” for my mom. “Sit in this chair, read, keep the lights off, and don’t let your mom hurt herself” while he went to provide for the family working construction. 

Did this for a summer it felt like. 8-10 hours of reading and watching and caring. Don’t know how many days I did it. But it shaped my whole world. 

When I was 19, my car died, I-75/85 at the Grady Curve, towed away, engine burned out, I never saw it again. Walking to work and back for 6+ months. Miles on miles. Never missed a day. 

When I was 22, I went weeks w/o money in college. Literally didn’t have food at times. When I did have money I’d go to Big Lots and buy old tuna, microwave rice and hot sauce. Same meal for 21 straight meals at one point. 

Those are sharp memories. 

There are more, but those come to mind first. 

I’m thankful for them and don’t blame anyone. 

God knew his plans for my life. He knew I needed to “endure” so I might “become” foundationally mature. 

This was my answer to Hampton Dortch’s question:

What’s the hardest thing you ever experienced?

You?

P.S. In my view, these experiences were a FORGE,
forming me into the man I am today. I have no 
regrets. And no desires for things to have been different.

This was my life. I embrace it. I am embracing it.

And I always… always… always

Don’t let your bad day become your family’s bad weekend

Something is radically broken. 

While traveling this week I came across a strange, puzzling, and sad example of leadership being completely detached from the front lines. 

At the front desk of my hotel, the attendants were kneeling on the ground (on their knees). 

Why?

Because they had to be at the desk at all times. 

No stools or chairs allowed. 

They could stand, however the designer of the hotel had built the front desk too low. 

So if you were taller than 5 ft 2 in you had to hunch over toward the desk in a very difficult position to access the keyboard. 

So instead of being allowed stools. Or standing all day hunched over, they had reverted to kneeling on a pad to do their work. 

It made for an odd experience as a guest. And I asked them about it and they said it was policy. 

No stools. No chairs. They couldn’t put a small shelf under their keyboards to make it taller. Nothing. 

Truly, can you imagine the executives or any other corporate employees being told they had to stand all day at a desk that was 6-18 inches too short. 

Or kneel on the ground to do their work?

Wild. 

I’m sure they’ve found a way to avoid OSHA laws. 

But still…

This isn’t designed to be a call out, as much as it is a call up. To do right by the front liners. To the everyday Americans hustling to take care of their families…

Or pay for school 

Or make ends meet. 

Let them stand. (With the right size desk)

Or sit. 

But kneeling for large portions of the day…

Radically broken…

The world portrays Dads as deadbeats. 

The science says not ‘being one’ matters. 

Reasearchers find closeness w/ fathers is associated w/ fewer weight concerns, higher self-esteem and fewer depression symptoms. 

[For both boys and girls]

3 ways I create closeness w/ my kids below:

1. One meal together a day. 

Doesn’t have to be long. Doesn’t have to be dinner. But everyone. Together. Once a day. 

2. Craft special times w/ just me. 

Ex: Each kid gets to stay up w/me for 30 min on the night of their birthday each month. 12x/year. 

3. Invite them in. 

I’m playing basketball. Invite them in. 
I’m tending the garden. Invite them in. 
I’m listening to music by the firepit. Invite them in.

Working Dads, especially with young kids, too many of us are in isolation. Never seeing buddies. 

Hustling at work. Tending to our families. 

It gets lonely. 

Most weeks, I’ll find a night to grab a cigar w/ a buddy after 8 PM by the firepit or a morning coffee at 6:30 or 7:00 or a ruck w/ my neighbor for 45 min on the weekend at 5:30 AM.

If this is you, you need to ask a buddy to hangout this weekend… a dad from the neighborhood, gym, church, a kid’s friend’s dad (not work). 

He will want to say “yes,” but it’s likely been 3+ months since he’s done anything for himself, so make it easy on him. After bedtimes. 

Choose a close spot or a beer on the deck / patio. 

Be kind to him as he negotiates w/ his wife on kid coverage. He will love you for it, and you’ll both feel awesome. Trust me.

Thankful for a half dozen men I can hit up for this anytime. 

Fellas, please find your life brothers. 

They need you. 

And you need them.

Never take advice from someone who isn’t 
where you want to be. 

I’m not talking about:
 
- money 
- possessions  
- status, titles, or accolades 

I’m talking about: 

- a fit body 
- a calm mind 
- and a house full of love 

If they have at least one…

Seek them out and learn from them.

I’m asked weekly how I follow Jesus and lead my life + business — and this is what I tell them…

1.   Be fruitful and multiply 

2.   Love God w/ all heart, soul, mind, and strength  
         And love my neighbor as myself

3.  Go and make disciples (apprentices)

Applications are many. Principles are few.

Applications change. But principles never do. 

This is how I live my life. 

Following Jesus is the most rewarding, joy filled, challenging, exciting, exhilarating, painful, and purposeful thing I’ve ever done. 

When people exploring Jesus (or already following him) ask me this question…

This is where I start. 

Breaking down real life examples for each. 

One young man, very driven, killing it Enterprise SaaS sells asked me, “why spend time on faith at all? why not just spend double the energy on business and making $$$?”

My kind and gentle reply: “Because I don’t want to gain the whole world, and lose my soul”

Yet, the fastest path to be remarkable…

Reading books + taking massive action. 

4 ways to read more often below:

1. Take a book to every meeting. When the other person is 5-10 minutes late. Read. 

2. Grab a book, and hit 10 pages before turning on Netflix each day. No TV until you’ve read. 

3. Put down any book you’re not interested in. If you find it interesting, you’re more likely to read it. 

4. Make it your routine. Make coffee. Read. Hit the stationary bike. Read. Get in bed. Read. The more routine it is. The more likely you’ll do it. 

The best leaders I know are insatiable readers. 

And massive action takers. 

Join them. 

P.S. When do you find time to read?

I don’t care who you are, what you’ve done, or how bad you’ve screwed up. If you want more from your life. I’ll never stop believing in you. 

15 yrs ago I had a jacked up mindset toward others:

“You can do better” was my primary thought. 

Makes me sick when I think about it. 

Now, At 37, this is what I believe: 

“There’s more for you. And I’m here to help you get there!”

All day. Every day.

Some of the most competent people I've ever met began their careers in ministry.

Preachers are excellent communicators and I think that’s a top 3 skill in life.

That or military, random sport D1, D2 & D3 Athletes, Fraternity/Sorority Presidents, and High level SGA leaders in college (or other student group leaders). 

In fact, nearly every leader I know did something on the above list. And those who didn’t are the exception not the rule. 

That or they were total tech nerds and used being “the outcast” to their proverbial advantage.

Summer 2017. 

The prior month, I closed 21 deals. 

A company record.

The growth forced our company to make new hires. And it prompted a major change in my compensation plan.

$15,000 gone overnight. 

Thousands and thousands more in future earnings. 

I felt like quitting. It didn’t feel right.
This shouldn't have happened, I thought.

“Why are they punishing me for doing well?”

I was angry, confused, rattled.

"This makes no sense to me," I said out loud.

I called a mentor. Someone I knew could help.

I asked him what I should do. How to respond. Was this right, wrong, was I missing something?

And he gave me some of the best careee advice I’ve ever received.

"Josh, don't be the guy who makes money the ultimate thing. Do you want to be in a leadership role in your company in 5 years? How you respond now will impact your growth track in your business. And some things cannot be undone. Trust me"

He was right.

I went back to the Leadership Team the next day. 

Made my case. And found a middle ground. 

It wasn't perfect. It wasn't easy. It wasn't what I had in mind. But it happened.

And I'm glad it did.

I was an unknown account executive at an unknown startup in an unknown city.

What if I had blown up? Quit? Put my foot down and said, "F-this?"

Would I be in the position I am today?

I can't imagine I would be.

Before writing this, I asked permission to share this story.

Why? Because it matters.

It matters for anyone who needs to slow down. Invite others in. And keep the long-term perspective in mind.

The way you respond to challenges now — will impact your future. It may be a year, five years, or ten years down the road — I don't know. 

But it will impact your life. 

And that's why I'm encouraging you now.

When faced with your specific challenge.

Don't fight. Don't explode. 

Don't say something you can't take back.

Breath.

Invite others in.

Take your time.

And keep the future in mind.

Now and for the long-haul.
