"Write like you talk" is terrible copywriting advice.

There, I said it. Because someone had to.

The better advice is to write like your customers talk.

A short story:

Last week I finished a small project for a weird product.

It was a bedwetting alarm to help stop kids peeing their pants while they were asleep. Quite niche, I know.

But think about this...

I was in Parenting subreddits for hours, researching:

What parents thought
What were their objections
What were their pain points
What were the solutions that
had previously failed them

And so much more...

But the thing is, I was also observing how they write about their problems.

And what I noticed was...

The way they described their problem was nothing like how I would describe it.

I'd probably use humor, drop in a pop-culture reference and might even lighten the tension by using sarcasm.

Would the parents who are having sleepless nights do the same?

Absolutely not.

They were frustrated, concerned and felt like they were failing. They weren't joking around. Rather, crying for help.

That's why you cannot write like you talk. At least, never for writing copy ad copy.

Because you're not writing for yourself. You're writing for your ideal customer and, you gotta sound like them.

Also, if you already didn't realize...

If you want to write like your customer talks, there's only one way to do that.

Research. Yes, AI can help you do that better and faster...

But if you're not willing to put in the groundwork, your copy would sound like you.

And that'd be a terrible piece of copy (no offense).

I was hand-copying a vintage print ad yesterday and realized something that more copywriters should do today:

Show, don't tell. 
Nope, I don't mean being a better visual artist.

I mean telling a descriptive story with words.

This Oakley ad was centered around how the lenses are so tough that they have survived bullets.

Technically, it's authority by association and they could've said these are "certified" or something but they didn't.

Instead, they weaved a beautiful story about how you should buy sunglasses with lenses that have already been shot.

That's a great hook,
followed by a great story,
ending on a great conclusion.

Lesson: If you want to show, don't tell—start with a story.

The most fun I had working on a recent account for creative ad briefs, research and scripting was coincidently the one where I got the most amount of data from the founder himself.

Post purchase surveys
Real-time ad comments

I did my fair share of research by diving deeper into Reddit and whatnot but surprisingly, more data allowed me to be less anxious.

Research no longer felt like a desperate effort to collect as much info as possible 

But more like a creativity exercise where I was looking into different perspectives so I can shape mine and create a script that wins.

Lesson?
If you want to be more creative, rely on data and do more research.

If your market is full of scammy products, stop writing “unaware” ads. Do what I did...

Yesterday, I wrote a script in the solution/product-aware category for the first time in a while.

Mostly, when we want maximum reach, so we default to ads for unaware or problem-aware audiences because the TAM is bigger.

And that’s fine.

But don’t ignore market sophistication.

Here’s why I chose to create a bottom-of-funnel script instead:

→ The market was flooded with fake or scammy products
 → My client actually had a strong, clearly defined USP
 → Only one other brand in the space truly stood out

This tells me the market doesn’t need more innovation on the problem or the persona.

It needs innovation on the unique mechanism and the quality of the product.

If you can communicate that clearly, you’ll produce an ad that rips.

P.S. Are you even a good marketer if you don't overthink and sweat every detail?

As a modern day creative strategist/copywriter, your ideas and taste will be your biggest differentiator...

But here's the thing most people don't get: Execution matters. Nope, I don't mean Google Doc execution.

I know you can cook up a great copy asset inside of a plain ol' doc but why not take it one step further with AI?

Cook up a 3-5 sec viral hook visual with VEO 3
Cook up a wild visual for a static ad if not the full ad
Cook up an in-depth analysis of the customer persona 

You're not just a researcher and a writer anymore. 

You're paid for your ideas so expand on that ability in more mediums than one because the barrier to entry has lowered drastically.

Actual step-by-step process of another script I wrote yesterday (had pre-existing research done in my Claude project)

-Had Claude spit out three personas, went with a new one
-Approached the angle from the buyer's perspective (pet product)
-Made it less educational and more frustration-based
-Browsed reddit for research
-Ended up finding a great thread that gave me idea for a hook
-Made 3 more hooks from that idea
-Sent it to Claude, worked out a skeleton script
-Spent 30 mins refining the script
-Was quite happy with the output

Two lessons:

1. Always do your first-timer research right. It sets the tone. In fact, it becomes the difference between being confused v/s being excited about writing the next ad.

2. Make sure that your core big idea/angle comes from a combination of creativity, perspective and data-backed validation.

I'm not sure why a women's jean ad came on my feed but I'm glad it did because it was a fantastic ad.

Not because it was flashy.
Not because it had a celebrity.

Because it wasn't selling "features."
In fact, it wasn't selling at all.

The ad? A creator showing two things:

→ How you wear the jeans (boring, predictable)
→ How THEY style it (wait... I need to see this)

That 3-second contrast did something most ads can't:

It made me curious.

Here's why this works (and what you can steal):

#1 They created an open loop

You already know how to wear jeans. We all do.
But you don't know how they style it.
That gap? That's what keeps you watching.

That's the difference between scrolling and stopping.

#2 They made it about YOU, not the product

The jeans isn't the hero. You are.
You want a confident, smart and head-turning look.
The jeans is just a part of that story

When a brand places itself in YOUR story (not theirs), you don't feel sold to. You feel seen.

#3 They picked the RIGHT creator

Partnership ads are easy. Finding someone who doesn't look like they're reading a script? That's the game.

No amount of editing can fix someone who's awkward on camera.

Find creators who know their shit AND can present it naturally.

(P.S. The brand is Off-Duty Jeans. They're not even 2 years old and already have 1M+ followers on Instagram. This is how.)

3 things to steal:
→ Create content that doesn't look like an ad
→ Partner with creators who can actually perform
→ Sell long-term value, not just a product

Don't ask: How many ads I should test?

Ask: How many angles can we craft for this product?

Let me explain it with an example:

Say you have an ergonomic pillow as your hero product. It's a modern support item that has a variety of use cases.

But if you're a noob marketer, you might be focused on formats.

Creating the next UGC testimonial ad
Creating the next feature point out static ad
Creating the next native format (Apple notes, Instagram story)

Is that wrong? Yes and no.

No because testing formats and different visual styles is important until you find something that clicks.

But yes, it's wrong because if you're not testing what you're actually saying and who you're saying it to, it's a wasted effort.

Instead, start with angles.

For an ergonomic pillow, think of angles like this:

It can be great for back support (back pain angle)
It can be great for intimacy (sexual wellness angle)
It can be a gift for a partner (surprise gift angle)
It can be running a great offer (free gift angle)
It can be for the dads with chronic back pain (persona angle)

Once you find an angle that clicks, iterate on the main message.

That's when you start testing:

Hooks
Visuals
Creators

and so much more...

If you only ask how many ads can I create, you either run out too quickly or test everything under the sun without any valuable insights.

With the second one, you start developing a core messaging approach. 

Get a head start with 3-5 angles and scale them across different concepts.
