I can immediately tell whether a company is dominated by product, engineering, growth or sales by looking at their roadmap and boardslides.

*Engineering-led:*
"If we prioritize all reported bugs and keep the systems alive, everything is fine." -> Leads to products that work but no-one uses.

*Sales-led:*
"If someone doesn't deliver in the org, we just increase the pressure by setting even more ambitious goals. We don't care about details, we care about screaming 'oorah' at 7am and whether a customer signs, not whether they actually need our solution" -> Leads to god ugly products that are impossible to onboard because they have no focus on recurring users. Everyone in customer success is chronically depressed.

*Product-led:*
"Customer comes first, always. We like emotion, not numbers" -> Leads to nice presentations and slick looking products that are caught in verification hell with fuzzy outcomes. Usually doesn't know how to prioritize anything and is afraid of bigger throws. Loves talking about customers with customers. Usually bootstrapped.

*Growth-Led:*
"We balance everything by ranking it by impact in $." -> Discounts anything that is hard to prove with numbers even though it's obvious. Leads to an overfocus on small detail improvements because big Ideas are hard to quantify and nobody wants to get in trouble for being ambitious anyways. Usually at war with either Marketing or Sales.

This story reminds me so much of this brilliant book, "4000 Weeks," I've read about how time management is a complete lie.

The more you optimize your week and the faster you answer your emails, the more requests will come your way and you get miserable and inefficient again.

I get the appeal of automating stuff so we have more time for other things, but at the same time, most people suck at setting boundaries.

And they are so, so important. If you don't have boundaries, you don't push back on the system and actively hide that there's a gap that should be covered.

How should I know that we should hire someone additionally or cut scope if you just always buckle down and load it up on yourself until you burn out?

Speed is just one variable of winning a race. Making sure you're driving in the right direction feels much harder and more important lately.
