As a SaaS founder, don’t fall into this trap.

During the first month of working with a client, I fell into the trap of writing content directed at their competitors.

I didn’t do it intentionally.

There’s a difference between sounding like an authority in your industry and “being” an authority to your ICPs.

It’s a different game.

(You are not fighting your competitors; you are just having a conversation with your ICP.)

After that one month, I came to understand their ideal client profile, so I flipped the content immediately.

The client noticed the change and asked me why I did that.

I explained to him how content marketing works, and most people tend to fall into this trap during the beginning stages of posting content.

This is a journey.

It took me months to realize my own content was speaking to my competitors, and I can see it from reading the comments on my posts back then.

It was so obvious.

Please, avoid this trap.

It just makes you feel good, but it doesn't attract much of your ICP.

But you should probably get someone on your team to pull up Sales Navigator and do thorough research to figure that out.

Before you start:

For example, I don’t think we have many musicians here on LinkedIn.

Now, if your ICP are these people, then you are definitely in for a lost cause.

Most times, the "perceived" ROI you get from a platform will determine the amount of effort to be invested in it.

That’s what having solid “go-to-market plans” means.

If your go-to-market plan revolves around LinkedIn, then you know what you should do here.

Take LinkedIn seriously if your ICP is so active here.

Or you might be on Team X.
Or team Reddit.

How? How can you achieve this using LinkedIn?

1) First, you connect with your ICP.

2) Second, find the ones that are actively engaging on LinkedIn.

Are they posting on LinkedIn?
Are they engaging in other people's posts?

This is a chance for you to build a relationship with them in the comment section.

3) Thirdly, there's another way to build relationships with them.

This can be done in the DMs.

I do this by having a funny conversation with every ICP that accepts my connection requests.

Pitching straight doesn't work for me.

4) Allow your content to nurture more ICP.

If you are actually connecting and engaging strictly with your ICP...

With time, LinkedIn will start showing your posts mostly to your ICP.

5) This is the conversion stage.

Create a list where you add leads that you have warmed up.

I always create a list like this for my clients to couple with the inbound leads they will get.

They can send this list to someone who knows how to convert warm leads.

Or they can do that by themselves if they like.

This is how to balance both outbound and inbound strategies on LinkedIn.

You have to confirm that your ICP is active here.

Taking them from a cold stranger to a user of your product is only possible if they are actually active on this platform.

He's looking to attract investors and it's proven that videos can help him build trust faster than posting your carousel or pitch deck.

With the right content strategy and his face talking in a video,

He can sell himself clearly to investors looking to find good founders who need funds.

These investors are stalking your LinkedIn profile to get to know you better.

What will happen if your profile doesn't speak to them?

1) When you send a connection request, there's a 50–60% chance they will check your profile.

2) When you send a DM, they will check your profile.

"When you want to know someone, their content will show what you need to know without even talking to them."

How true is that?

Last week, I read a post from an investor with a huge portfolio saying one of the reasons he didn't finalize a deal with a founder was because the dude didn't have a LinkedIn profile.
 
I once had a lead that told me their main aim was to get an investor.
 
I was only used to selling the products themselves to customers, not to investors, but I later found out...
 
The same principles apply to both of them.
 
What's important to investors?
What's important to your customers?
 
Is it the same thing?
 
Do your customers ask about annual revenue?

Content strategy for SaaS founders.

Last year, I wrote one post to shout out a recent cold outreach SaaS tool I found.

And the post did so well.

About 65% of the comments on that post were interested in the tool.

Recently, while gathering more reasons why SaaS founders should speak to their users 1-1 to get their unique stories for content...

How do you capture leads daily?

These days, SaaS founders are worrying about whether posting content on LinkedIn is still an effective thing to do for their business.

Can I tell you something?

While you keep questioning this, I can't help but notice Saas founders who are maneuvering their way around it.

You see them post about getting leads daily; how do they do that?

It's definitely not an inbound lead.

You need to get to a certain point in your content journey or algorithm to be able to attract inbound leads daily.

There's another way.

I call it balancing both inbound and outbound strategies together.

It looks something like this:

1) Posting on LinkedIn and capturing ICPs that commented on your posts, tagging them as "warm" leads.

2) Or when your post is not garnering much attention yet, you add it to your schedule to engage with your ICPs who are posting on LinkedIn and also tag them as "warm" leads with time.

The sales cycle now requires you to turn these "warm" leads into customers.

There's a third way Saas founders are using to book calls with their ICP daily:

I'm actually testing the validity of that process, and I will share the results when I'm done.

I will add that to my services if it works.

So, if you want to book calls daily with your ICP, it will take time for your inbound strategy to take you there.

I know the word "balance" might be getting some bad raps, but that's your solution.

But when it comes to posting videos, it's proven to build trust easier.

You don't need to post it daily; maybe 3 videos monthly or something.

I almost complicated stuff with a client; they were thinking of getting a studio for the sole purpose of creating videos for LinkedIn.

But I figured out that if I make it like that, the client will find it so hard to be consistent in recording the videos.

So, we just have our normal call and record some part of it for video content.

I took the video,
Describe when I want to focus on something, cut off some parts and send it to my video editor.

That's how my client was posting one video every week and looking at the data... 

The video got more impressions than the text posts and infographics.

I make it a thing to try those 3 content formats on every one of my client's pages, check which one is performing most and maybe double down on it if the client gives permission.

Also, are most SaaS founders introverts? It was hard to get a client to record some videos haha
