The biggest mistake I made in the early days of building a partner program was trying to do too much all at once. It took me a while to realize that I had just three options to be successful in the long run:

1️⃣ Focus and limit who we partner with.
2️⃣ Hire more people.
3️⃣ Leverage technology to scale our impact.

That's it. Pursuing any other option will likely lead to disappointment and failure. Sometimes, a mix of those three strategies is necessary.

There's a huge disconnect between what partner teams do and what people think they do. 

No, we don't just ask for referrals. 

We build trust, get partner excited, keep them engaged, and then orchestrate the co-sell process. It's not trivial, which is why the C suite needs to properly fund the partner team if they want this to scale.

Too many partner programs were built without the Partner Experience in mind, and it's frustrating for partners.

Just because things look good to internal teams doesn't mean partners love them. 

A great Partner Experience can truly set you apart.

Instead of just telling your partners, 'Here’s how we do this, here’s what we expect of you,' become more partner-centric. Think about how you can make their lives easier, get them excited, involve them more proactively, and show them you value them.

Maximize co-sell revenue with Tier 1 partners

Most companies struggle to scale co-selling. The key reason is that they see it as an activity but it's a process.

Account mapping is neither the end nor the beginning of the co-sell process. It's a step in a complex dance that involves two partner teams and their companies' reps on both sides.

👋 Onboard partners
👉 Enable partner's PAM & AE
👉 Nurture relationship with partner's PAM & AE.
👉 Identify overlaps (you should use Crossbeam or Reveal for that)
👉 Get actual referral via the PAM or AE
👉 Internal enablement of your AEs (how to work with partners)
👉 Identify deal issues (like stuck deals)
👉 Align reps on both sides
👉 Update partner on progress, keep them excited, and engaged (even if things are going well)
🙌 Share the win, create success story, drive momentum

This CANNOT be a manual process where a partner manager stitches together email templates, PRM, CRM data, and, in the worst case, other data sources as well. Your partner team is too busy, and manually handling all this stuff means steps will be omitted, not all data will be utilized, and you won’t be reaching your full potential.

Most success in business can be reverse-engineered, so let’s do it for co-selling:

1️⃣ You need to know who can actually help you win deals.
2️⃣ Those people need to know you, trust you, and feel valued. 
3️⃣ You need to prioritize the right deals where partners add most value.
4️⃣ You need to connect the right partners with the right AEs at the right time.
5️⃣ All this has to happen in a very natural, personal manner. 

Figure out how to build a process that enables that systematically and you'll win.
