💡 grow your professional network inside and outside your company
💡 support others, it pays dividends 
💡 and don’t forget to have fun!

This is huge! Apple just quietly acquired yet another AI startup - a French AI company specializing in on-device processing 😳

Paris-based Datakaleb described itself as “experts in low power, runtime efficient, and deep learning algorithms” that work on device.

This is yet another strategic move for Apple as the tech giant is reportedly building an LLM that will be completely on-device instead of cloud-based.

This could thus improve privacy and speed up response times for AI on devices, and completely change the way we interact with AI right now.

The crazy part?

This is at least the 34th AI startup that Apple has acquired since 2023, the most among the major tech companies 🤯

Apple is quietly building the (AI)Phone 2.0.

Huge.

The Mercer Global Talent Trends 2024 are Here...

🌟 What's Your Lens on the Future of #CorporateVenturing... It requires a hybrid approach to collaborating, investing and building digital capabilities.

Corporate venturing has evolved significantly over the past decades. Despite several hype cycles, the results for most corporations have been disappointing, both financially and in terms of building effective long-term capabilities.

Really honored to engage last week with the innovation and venturing team Tokio Marine Kiln. Thank you Maria Lagoumidou, Miranda Quigley and Rob Jarvis for the invitation.  

The vital parts for a successful corporate venturing program is applying a systematic approach that builds programming capabilities and assets for the long haul. 

Based on my experience, an effective corporate venturing strategy rests on three pillars and mixing and matching internal vs. external approaches:

📍  Collaborate—Partner with startups through accelerators, incubators and corporate-startup innovation labs. Corporations can drive innovation by tapping into the agility and fresh thinking of entrepreneurial ventures.

📍  Invest—Corporate venture capital funds provide funding to high-potential startups. CVCs enable corporations to gain a stake in emerging technologies and business models. The most successful CVCs, like Google Ventures, Intel Capital and Salesforce Ventures, balance strategic alignment with financial returns.

📍  Build—Develop new ventures internally using the venture studio model. Corporate venture studios allow companies to systematically validate business models, recruit entrepreneurial talent, and rapidly scale new businesses. P&G, Mars, and Standard Chartered Bank and many others have all launched venture studios to build strategically important companies. Because of the high risk vs. high returns, fewer studios have been shaped to deliver consistent value from venture studios in insurance because of the fear of failure, I guess. Therefore, I am always inspired to see great companies pushing along with venture building in our very insurance field. 

The future of corporate venturing lies in hybrid approaches that combine elements of collaboration, investment, and venture building. 

Corporations can accelerate innovation and create sustainable growth engines by leveraging this three-pronged approach.

🌟 The #AI #Trust Paradox: Navigating the Perils and Promise of Our AI-Powered Future 💫

Following last weekend sessions at Bayes Business School with Gianvito Lanzolla and Matteo Devigili. I decided to do some research today on the "bad" side of AI. As I was reviewing articles, I discovered this piece of research on Harvard Business Review.

So think about this... It is clear humanity stands at the precipice of an AI revolution. The promise is certainly tantalizing: a world where artificial intelligence can solve our greatest challenges, from curing diseases to identifying early cancer and mitigating the risk of climate change. 

Yet, as the capabilities of AI surged forward at breakneck speed, a chasm of distrust threatened to engulf its potential. 

Bhaskar Chakravorti's insightful in his article "AI's Trust Problem" illuminates the twelve horsemen of the AI apocalypse:

📍 Disinformation eroding the very fabric of truth
📍 Gaping vulnerabilities in safety and security
📍 The impenetrable "black box" of AI decision-making
📍 Ethical quandaries that keep us up at night
📍 Algorithmic bias amplifying societal inequities
📍 Erratic behaviors that defy human logic
📍 Hallucinations in large language models blurring reality
📍 Unknown risks lurking in the shadows
📍 Job displacement widening the inequality divide
📍 The environmental toll of compute-intensive AI
📍 Centralization of power in the hands of Big Tech giants

Like many of you I am fascinated by the transformative potential of AI. Still, I fell that we stand at a critical juncture. If we allow the trust deficit to grow unchecked, we risk squandering one of the greatest opportunities in human history. 

Yet, amidst this fast approaching storm clouds, there is a path forward. The key lies in placing humans at the center of AI's evolution and doubling down on #responsibleAI practices, empowering diverse voices - from ethicists to social scientists to everyday citizens - to help chart a course forward. 

By investing in #humancentered design, lifelong upskilling, and proactive governance frameworks, we can also begin to bridge the trust gap.

The road ahead won't be easy though. Building trust in AI will require unwavering commitment, difficult trade-offs, and a willingness to confront hard truths head-on. But if we can summon the collective wisdom and courage to the masses to tackle these challenges, we can potentially push forward to progress toward an era of AI-powered innovation that uplifts humanity as a whole.

📍 The Mobile Phone Phenomenon in Africa: Nowhere was the speed of innovation more evident than in Africa, where the lack of traditional infrastructure paved the way for a technological leapfrog, shares Romaney.

In a continent where landlines were scarce, mobile phones became not just a means of communication but a lifeline. From farmers checking market prices to entrepreneurs building businesses, the mobile phone empowered millions.

This leapfrogging phenomenon extended beyond communication. In countries like Kenya, mobile money services like M-PESA Africa transformed financial inclusion. Suddenly, people who had never set foot in a bank could send and receive money, pay bills, and access credit – all from their mobile phones.
The Rise of Frugal Innovation

📍 Emerging markets also birthed a new kind of innovation – frugal innovation: Faced with limited resources and unique challenges, innovators in these markets learned to do more with less. They created products and services that were affordable, accessible, and tailored to local needs.

Enjoyed my recent chat with SAS’s brain trust Josefin Rosén, Kristi Boyd, CIPT and Prathiba Krishna.

In our Webinar last week, Josefin emphasized that AI has evolved from being the icing in the cake to becoming the core ingredient or flour in the cake.

Well there is no surprise here right? In a world where #AI is becoming the essential ingredient in crucial decision-making processes, it's not just a nice-to-have - it's a must-have! 🌍

Think about it: if AI-driven decisions aren't fair, accurate, and trustworthy, they could seriously impact people's health, safety, economy, and even basic rights. 😰

That's why AI needs to be people-centric, safe, #ethical, and fair, reflecting our values as a society shares Josefin. 

But here's the tricky part: agreeing on those values can be challenging, as what's considered "right" and "fair" can vary across contexts, use cases, countries, and cultures. 🌐

🤔 Thoughts on reinventing a world of abundance through #TrustworthyAI and via insights from Kara Swisher, Miriam Vogel & Reggie Townsend. 💫

#sasinnovate is underway and it was inspiring to listen to an all-star panel tackling one of the most critical issues in technology today - steering the #AI revolution in an #ethical direction to unlock its immense potential for good.

📍 Kara Swisher, renowned and authentic tech journalist shares "AI is now being innovated here in this country more than anything. And it's a critical technology going forward. If we don't allow smaller companies to thrive and not be smothered by bigger companies, we're going to be screwed." 

Swisher advocated strongly for updated regulations and public-private partnerships to ensure AI benefits society broadly. "You've never seen an industry that takes, first of all, they use the rails that were paid for by the taxpayer, and then they make a ton of money, and then they take all your data and then they eat it, and then they vomit it back up to you and ask you to say thank you for what they're doing and charge you."

📍 Miriam Vogel, Chair of the National AI Advisory Committee and CEO of #EqualAI, highlighted the legal frameworks already in place. "If you are falsely claiming that your AI can do things or that it has been tested as safe, and that's false, you actually are in violation of the law." However, Miriam acknowledged, "We have work to do. But I think we're seeing progress."

📍 SAS VP of Data Ethics Reggie Townsend probed the economics of foundation models, asking if they will stand up if required to pay for training data, which he poignantly described as "our recorded experience, our recorded existence."

The panelists aligned on the need for #transparency, diverse teams developing AI, and focusing innovation on high-impact areas like healthcare and sustainability. As Swisher puts it, "What if we are actually able to reduce infant mortality rates? What if we're able to direct government services to those in need while at the same time eliminating fraud and abuse? Would that be good?"

While the challenges are immense, the panel left us with a hopeful vision - that with the right safeguards, governance, and #ethicalleadership from companies like SAS, we can harness AI as a transformative force to reinvent a world of abundance. 

The key will be translating these vital conversations into action.

🌟 World of Hyatt Hotels Corporation real-life story: A Broken Promise to a Loyal Customer? 
💫

As a long-time World of Hyatt member, I've collected points for years, trusting that the brand would consistently deliver on the essential needs of business professionals when traveling internationally and outside of their homes: 

1️⃣  A nourishing breakfast to start the day right (and potentially, for me, my single meal for the day!)
2️⃣  Reliable internet to stay connected and productive.
3️⃣  Hypoallergenic pillows for a restful night's sleep before the next day of workshops, meetings and value creation activities.
4️⃣  And most importantly, a dependable internet connection to conduct with teams, work and businesses seamlessly...

However, my recent experience at a World of Hyatt hotel has left me questioning the brand's commitment to its loyal customers traveling internationally, and in my case just, now Germany.

Because of a major storm (yes remember that climate change is happening people!), my plane was diverted from Germany to Holland. I finally arrived at the hotel at 1:30 am, exhausted but relieved. 

Little did I know, my troubles were just beginning. 

Today, during some of my most valuable thinking time, I spent nearly 2-3 hours trying to connect to the Internet. 

In today's digital age, is it too much to expect a functional internet connection or other options if the WIFI falls down?

Frustrated, I resorted to using my 5G device to get my work done. 

But here's the catch: when I return to the UK, I'll be greeted with a hefty international internet bill, all because the hotel failed to provide one of its standard promised services.

I approached the reception, explaining that the internet wasn't working on my computer, despite all my other devices being connected with my paid-for plans.

The receptionist's response? A condescending look, as if I were an old fart who couldn't tell my internet connection from my 5G. 

I politely asked if there was a problem, emphasizing that I had been trying for over an hour or two now. 

The receptionist's solution?  "Well, have you tried it on your mobile phone device?" 

I explained that I have European 5G for calls and mobile usage, and I was using a different device—a computer—on different terms of usage.

The receptionist informed me that no help was available as all the engineers had left for the day. 

So... As a last resort, I requested an ethernet cable. 

The response: "No, you cannot get an ethernet cable. You could hack our systems!" 

I couldn't help but smile and be "less nice" at the absurdity of the situation.

My question to you, World of Hyatt Hotels: Will you take responsibility for the unexpected stress and, for sure, the financial burden no one should experience visiting your hotels on business? 

Still, for someone like me, where values and principles are so important, I would welcome your response!
