Reversing brain drain is possible for Jamaica. I remember losing tech talent to Canada and sometimes the US when I served as CDO of a local bank. We were able to reduce this attrition through offering attractive salaries and the opportunity to work on world-class solutions. On a national level however, the brain drain continues to be a problem. But now with the recent announcement of Intellibus offering J$10M salaries for software engineers, that tide may finally be turning... I share some thoughts on what else needs to happen in addition to higher salaries to make this a reality. It takes hard work to make things look easy! Hosting a 24-hour Hackathon is no small feat—it takes meticulous planning, collaboration, and energy. That’s why it was such a pleasure to help execute the Pre-Day Press Launch & Workshop for Team Intellibus’ first-ever Hackathon in Jamaica! Held at the sleek Innovation Gallery, AC Hotel, we welcomed members of the press, key players in Jamaica’s burgeoning AI/tech space, and leaders from the academic community for a morning of networking, coffee, and a sneak peek into what the Hackathon would bring. Did you spot some of the incredible minds in the room? (Shoutout to Nadeen Matthews Blair, Christopher Reckord Sean Thorpe ,PhD Prof. Gunjan Mansingh and others!) After the launch, we dove into a full day of in-person & virtual prep sessions—equipping coaches, speakers, judges, and organizers with everything they needed for a high-energy, rewarding weekend. Grateful to have been able to support Team Intellibus in their mission to explore and invest in Jamaica’s tech talent through recruitment and this incredible event. I had the pleasure of participating in the Intellibus AI Hackathon in Jamaica on March 15-16, alongside 600+ other students and professionals. My team, Team 42/Team Constellation, was honored to secure 3rd place with our application, Danger Zone! 🚨 What is Danger Zone? "Danger Zone" is an emergency reporting application designed for both civilians and authorities. It allows users to: ✔️ Report various emergencies, including crimes, states of emergency, and natural disasters ✔️ Receive real-time alerts about ongoing incidents ✔️ View reports on a map with filtering options ✔️ Submit reports via voice or text, attach images, and even call 119 directly from the app ✔️ Utilize AI-powered event consolidation, where similar alerts in the same area are merged into a digestible news-style event This hackathon was an amazing learning experience and a great opportunity to showcase my skills. I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Aditya (Ed) Watal, Anubis Watal, the Intellibus team, Anwin 💰 Mbah, and the ambassadors for organizing the largest event of its kind in Jamaica!
