But value and execution wins deals.

Here’s how a VP of Sales at a $100m+ ARR company described to me his pipeline management process with AEs.

He called the framework RPA.

3 simple steps. 

1. R = Results

Look at this first...

(R)esults = Signed deals, quota attainment. 

Are they hitting targets? Are they closing deals? Are the maximising opportunities?

If yes, that’s great. Help them amplify, accelerate and win more. Focus on unblocking.

2. P = Pipeline

Let’s say, there are no results or the results are not good enough.

In the absence of Results inspect...

(P)ipeline = What is the person working on? What's the quality of that pipeline? How’s the pipeline moving?

This is a very different conversation for a manager. The goal is to help convert pipeline.

Why are deals getting stuck? Is it POCs? Is it competition? Has the AE used the resources at their disposal to secure wins, move deals forward and close?

3. A = Activity

In the absence of Results and Pipeline inspect...

(A)ctivity = What is the person doing to generate pipeline? How are they prospecting? What are they doing to engage accounts? How are they leveraging internal teams to help create pipeline? Are they researching accounts to identify compelling events and align to strategic priorities? (this is where we help at Salesmotion)

This is one of the biggest gaps we see sales teams struggle today. Especially as markets are noisy with AI hype, channels are saturated and there’s fewer SDR capacity supporting AEs forcing them to become full-cycle AEs.

There’s a lot of potential coaching reps to prospect better and getting used to picking up the phone again.

That’s it. A simple framework for pipeline management.

Salesforce is the 2nd worst performing stock in the Dow Jones down 27% YTD. 

I analysed the earnings call in Salesmotion.

Here are what you need to know.

CONTEXT

- Revenue +10% YoY
- Net Profit of $1.9B, $10.2B Revenue
- Data & AI ARR hit $1.2B (+120% YoY)
- 6000 AgentForce deals, 60% increase
- Margin 34.3% (10th quarter of expansion)

So far so good. The ROI from AI is visible. At least in sales. 

But is it enough to justify the millions being poured in?

The market isn’t convinced.

Not yet at least. And hence why margin expansion is still key, leading to 6,000 layoffs partly disguised as AI-improvements.

EARNINGS HOT TOPICS

1. AI Bubble vs Disruption?

Market skepticism/competitive narrative about SaaS vs. AI-native disruption. Analysts probing whether Salesforce can maintain leadership as AI transforms software.

2. Value

Big need to demonstrate value, differentiation and enterprise-grade reliability. Accuracy for AI is key. Pilot-to-production conversion is critical.

3. Implementation

Challenges in implementation complexity at scale: customers experiencing “pilot purgatory” and prompt-engineering/“prompt doom loop". 

AI is not deterministic, very different from how Salesforce operated as a traditional SaaS. It requires a different way of thinking about tech entireley.

4. Headcount 

Reductions in support help margins. Questions on effectiveness and sustainability of the productivity gains from analysts. 

Online debates on how much it's AI replacing humans and how much it's just a reason to cut employees to improve margins while growth slows. Probably the trust is in the middle.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR SALESFORCE

A) Pressure on Dreamforce to prove Salesforce can lead the “agentic enterprise” narrative with real innovation and customer success stories. (If you're headed there, hit me up, would love to talk).

B) Keep pushing margins higher. Wall Street now expects Salesforce to balance AI growth with disciplined profitability. Meaning more layoffs to come and fiercer fights to win deals against upstarts.

C) Accelerate pilot to production conversions. “Pilot purgatory” is real, and investors want to see scaled, enterprise-grade adoption that justifies the investment.

Every software company is on the same journey.

AI is exciting, but delivering real value is everything.
