Dads (and male role models) have immeasurable impact on young men.

Boys who grow up without a male role model are far more likely to end up in jail or homeless. 

They are also far more likely to end up in poverty, drop out of school, become addicted to drugs, or have a child out of wedlock.

I am lucky that despite losing my dad when I was 11, I didn't have such fate. 

It helped that I had a few surrogate male role models fill my lives over the years. 

This video of Freddie Freeman, named World Series MVP last week, shows you never outgrow needing the love and support of your dad. 

And for him to be proud of you. 

This was him as he hit a walk off grand slam in Game 1 - and rushed to find his father.

"I’m closing this round in 30 days. Are you in?”

This is what founders should be saying. Instead of...

“Are you interested in investing?”

“Do you have time for a call?”

“Can I send you more info?”

Listen, you need to start telling not asking.

Confidence and urgency change the conversation.

You’re not asking for permission—you’re driving the deal.

Don't be apologetic or passive - be straight.

Shift your mindset from “I hope they want in" to "this thing is moving so now’s the time.”

I acquire SMBs in all sorts of unrelated industries. 

Habit formation has been key to my productivity and ability to balance it all. 

And after working with therapists and coaches here's the best strategy to actually build habits as a founder.

It's called the ‘Don't Break the Chain' strategy.

1. Pick a task you want to do daily.

2. Get a calendar.

3. Complete the task and mark an 'X' on the calendar.

4. Keep going. Don’t break the chain.

Just like crossing a task on a to-do list.

This positively reinforces you to keep going.

It works because:

- There's visual progress. The X's add up to motivate you.

- There's a need for consistency. Showing up is enough!

- There's self-accountability. Daily visual reminders work!

I've applied this to everything.

Exercise, family commitments, business tasks. I love it.

Once the habit is solid, it’s almost effortless to maintain.

But you’ll notice - I’ve broken the chain a few times. 

It’s human to miss a day. 

So give yourself grace if you miss a day. 

Life happens.

Just don’t miss two.

Everyone talks about finding your 'superpower'

But mine has led me to blind spots.

My superpower is/was execution. 

It led me to feeling invincible - that everything I did could work. 

- I was able to conceive and bring to life multiple businesses.

- It helped me win with speed. 

- It made me decisive. 

Which meant I often:

- Eschewed relevant data points that I falsely thought I could over come  

- Made decisions that went against my gut instinct 

- Forgot some decisions take time and patience to make

Only recently…

through careful review of my professional life in regular therapy and coaching sessions 

…did I start to notice that maybe what I thought was my greatest strength might actually preventing me from something greater.

Use your superpowers but then develop your own villain.

The one that challenges them.

So you have a balanced opinion rather than an all in mentality.

It’s been 2,919 days since I first put this hippie bracelet on. 

I remember vividly because it was the day after the 2016 presidential election. 

Me and a couple hundred other founders, entrepreneurs, and creatives boarded a boat for a retreat called Summit At Sea. 

I remember how frought many of the attendees were as a certain businessperson had just been called as the new President of the United States. 

This thing isn’t particularly special or meaningful to me, I’ve mostly kept it on all this time because it hasn’t fallen off. 

But - because of the timing of when I put it on - always acts a measuring stick for me to see how far things have come in 8 years.
