Here are 5 things that caught me by surprise in the last month:


1️⃣ For B2B Boosted, ~25% of inbound leads started coming in from channel partners, be it Clay's Experts directory, HeyReach.io's Outbound Outliers or by users of tools like Trigify.io seeing a video I made about how to use the platform.

I see other folks like Aman and Diandra appear on HeyReach.io's YouTube recently too,  so it seems that finding channel-partners is a win-win for the reach of creators and the SaaS tools. 

If you are thinking of how to get new clients for your service, look for up-and-coming SaaS tools in your niche, whose audience you can educate about using the SaaS tool. Such a simple yet powerful way to get more inbound interest in your services.

 2️⃣ Most of our clients at B2B Boosted now want a Done With You service rather than a Done For You.

I assume it is because they want to:
→ see every email template before it is sent out
→ understand how to one day bring the Clay set-up in-house

 3️⃣ 4 people booked in hourly consultations with me to build out Clay tables that most agencies would probably charge ~$3k to build at least.

2 learnings from this:
A) Doing hourly consultations can be a nice side gig, making money just teaching people Clay in 1to1 calls
B) I should only block off 4 hours a week for consulting hours, otherwise I get distracted from growing B2B Boosted.

 4️⃣ You learn 10x faster face-to-face than online.

In the last few months, I got to meet some cool folks like Penn, Felix, Hugo, Piers, Mohamed, Joel, Papa, Vukasin and many others - and spending a few hours chatting to them taught me more than binge-watching every Clay-related video on YouTube could.

Just a reminder for you to touch some grass, meet some people from your industry face-to-face and to not just work remotely every single day (as tempting as it is 😊).

 5️⃣ I asked 440+ Unlock Clay students for what I should add to the course - they came up with 84 ideas for how to make the course even better

Things like:
→ adding a RevOps module which I will be releasing with the help of Marina Ghilchik 🥾 from GirlsWhoClay (she runs a really cool Clay community, go check it out btw!)
→ adding a cold calling module with the help of Roman Hipp and BetterContact.
→ creating a roadmap for how you can become a GTM engineer  - and I am trying to get OG GTME's like Yash to contribute to this type of roadmap.
→ trying to get some recruitment thought leaders like Noëmie Jacquemin to share what Clay workflows actually work for staffing agencies and which workflows are a waste of time.

We ran 8 small outbound campaigns for our Clay services last month

And generated 3 proposals worth $12k on the back of it.

Here are 3 learnings:

Learning #1: This time I tried Kellen Casebeer's MSPA campaign strategy - it worked.

Let me explain...

Here's an example of the most successful campaign where 1 in 34 people replied to our outreach:

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭→ Recruitment 

𝐒𝐞𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭→ Any staffing agencies that follow Clay on Linkedin or engaged with James Blackwell posts in the last year and have 10+ employees (sourced from ScrapeLi & Trigify.io, of course)

𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚 → Founder, CEO, any decision-maker titles that clearly show involvement in candidate sourcing or client finding (sales, growth, operations roles etc).
 
𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝟏→manual candidate sourcing just reliant on plastering Linkedin Recruiter, ATS & manually qualification candidates:
𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝟐→no cold outreach tactics being tested right now & just purely reliant on old clients coming back with more placements
𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝟑→ heard  folks like James Blackwell tell them to use AI for their staffing business & want a no-BS implementation using Clay.

So yes, it does look like we are running 1 campaign for recruiters.
But we can A/B test the angles to see which one performs best.
And we have multiple experiments running in parallel.

Learning #2: Offer & CTA testing
Maybe I'm hopeless at cold outreach, but begging for a meeting in email 1 is a bit too desperate.

So we tested a variation of 4 offers & CTAs:
𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐀 - Finally Learn Clay (for free) using the Unlock Clay free mini-course for recruiters
𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐁 - Reply "random word" to get the top 10 automated candidate sourcing workflows that you can get inspiration from for your own implementation.
𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐂 - Reply "random word" to get 5 weird but effective campaigns that get prospects to reply to recruiters without chasing open role listings.
𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐃 - An open question asking "how long have you been putting off implementing Clay for {Company Name}?

There were 2 offers that generated the 8 positive replies for this campaign - comment below which offers you think performed best...

Learning #3:
 When you filter for an audience as niche as recruiters that follow Clay on Linkedin, your lead list size shrinks massively.

I ended up with ~400 ICP prospects for this campaign.

That's fine, but if the list is under 200 leads or so - probably worth broadening the ICP to give you more volume.

We can now top up the campaign with people that engaged with other recruitment thought leaders' posts, so I'm not worried about the initial list being only 400 leads or so...

Learning #4:  You don't need killer personalisation to pull this off.

7 things I wish I did earlier at B2B Boosted:

 Set up instant lead reply notifications for all clients - across email, Linkedin, Slack so that it makes it impossible for clients to miss the notifications of positive replies.

② Hire the first employees in the right order. For me, this was:

Employee 1 = Automations person to automate all my manual ineffeciencies.

Employee 2 = Customer success to give me the piece of mind that all clients are under control and I can switch off my Slack notifications and work on things that move B2B Boosted forward. Marco was the perfect hire for this.

Employee 3 = GTM engineer. Needless to say, someone has to be constantly building Clay tables, thinking of campaign angles, copywriting and the campaign strategy for everything. It's therapeutic to huddle with Khaydien every other week and to run ideas & Clay tables past him.

Employee 4? Not really sure just yet - I think we are just finding the right balance now...

③ Write down every single business process in a Miro board.
 Sebastian showed me OutDo's SOPs last year and I was blown away... so simple yet 99% of businesses never visualise the SOPs and processes. Game changer. 

④ Broken down my business into 3 systems. 
"Every service-based business has just 3 systems"
 - Client Acquisition
- Client Onboarding
- Service Fullfilment
The progress is:
Step 1 - solo managing all 3 systems
Step 2 - hiring 3 different people to manage a system each
Step 3 - building out departments around each of these systems

I read a lot about agency growth and this seems to be the most realistic way to simplify agency growth for me at B2B Boosted right now.

⑤ Hired a good accountant.
I talked about this already, but it's great to know that:
- all expenses are categorised correctly
- all invoices and receipts are up to date
- you have some minimal analytics to see what brings in money and what doesn't. 

⑥ Learned "Sales Funnels"
In my opinion, not many people in the Claygency space have any real "funnels" going for them.
If you want to learn more about funnels - I recommend checking out Russell Brunson's books and signing up for every competitor and thought leader's newsletter to see how they sell their services.
The main reason that I am releasing newsletter, free mini-courses and everything of that sort is because I can see my funnels work WAY better when I deliver more free value via newsletters and mini-courses.

⑦ Realised that no one has it figured out.
Yep, many folks like myself are pretty good at Clay.
Does that mean that we have the answer to every Clay question? Hell no.
Same with all this AI and Clay hype - as soon as you realise everyone is equally as confused about the AI bubble, it just makes you feel a bit better about yourself, even after looking at tonnes of Linkedin posts claiming to have "generated 1m+ leads for under $0.0002 using just 1 random AI agent"...

I spent a bank holiday Monday chatting with Felix Frank, Matthew Putnam 🔵 & Penn Frank ⚙️.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐈 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 from them:

1️⃣ Linkedin is still the #1 place to get leads. 
↳ StackOptimise ⚙️ grew from $0 to $1m+ ARR, with most leads coming organically from their Linkedin content.
↳ Matthew grew his Sales Upskill community to 1k+ members from Linkedin alone.

↳ Too many people put "stealth mode" as their headline on Linkedin and put off posting until they understand the algorithm, have social proof or "have more time".  
↳ Instead, I recommend you just documenting your learnings and the behind-the scenes of getting started. Because it will be refreshing for those people that have not made the leap of faith yet, who are likely a step behind you.

2️⃣ Having a value-ladder is underrated.

Something I chatted about with Fabian Herhold just last week...

In Felix & Penn’s case, they have: 
→ lead magnets - free value 
→ Their e-book - $99 
→ GTME course - $349 
→ agency services - $3k+ (I suppose)

This means that you can:
→have an offer for people, regardless where they are in the buying journey.
→customers can upsell themselves from the cheaper products to most expensive ones. 
(B2B Boosted onboarded 5+ clients that upsold themselves after buying the Unlock Clay course and realised that it is time-consuming to implement Clay in-house.)

3️⃣ Outbound in 2025
↳ To succeed with lead generation, you need to be testing at least 3-4 different campaign angles every month.
↳ 99% of in-house sales teams will not be able to ship 2+ campaigns with different email copy for each one - and that is the biggest USP of running a Clay agency.
↳ you are just 1 Clay template away from setting up 5+ campaigns at one time (I will do a longer video on how to pull this off, after testing our new setup at B2B Boosted).

Yes, each tool takes up no less than 30 minutes to set up correctly. 

But once it is set up, the outreach messaging is a solid 7/10 and all you need to do is add leads, tweak the prompts and these tools will auto-personalise emails for you…

Option 2: Spend a bit of money on a Clay course
↳ Unlock Clay in my opinion is the best course out there (costs £100).
↳ I heard good things about StackOptimise ⚙️'s course too and I believe it costs ~$349.
↳ I heard good things about Jordan Crawford's course too, so maybe worth checking it out (I believe it costs ~$299).
Not sure if there are any other courses out there for Clay - but these are the three most popular courses that I have heard about from 450+ students that we taught inside Unlock Clay so far.
↳ Hans Dekker's ClayMBA course - which I personally completed 2 years ago  ($500).

Option 3: More hands-on ways to learn Clay
↳ Clay Bootcamp 🥾 can help you learn Clay and create a profitable Clay agency in under 60 days (according to their website) and I heard some great things about Clay Bootcamp from folks like Jani Vrancsik.
↳ The Clay Operator has been teaching Clay for a while too - so it may be worth checking out too. I believe it provides done-with-you Clay coaching.
↳ automate rev.ops. I believe also trains up folks to become GTM engineers.

I hope this post will act as a guidepoint for those of you that want to understand all the different ways that you can learn Clay.com

PS: I built Unlock Clay which I update on a monthly basis to give you the freshest and most up-to-date Clay knowledge out there.

“How much money do you make from your course?”

This may surprise you...

→Unlock Clay price = £100
→Stripe processing fee = £3
→Sales tax (depending on country of sale) = £10
→VAT = £20
→ Net profit per course sale = £67 per student.
→ If I also start an affiliate program, giving 20% affiliate revenue for referrals to Unlock Clay, this will lower to £47 profit per student.

But here’s the thing…

Most of the money is made through the 3 other revenue sources:
➊ 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝟏: Affiliate revenue → every time that a student uses a referral link, they get a special discount to mainstream sales tools and I typically get a 5-10% affiliate revenue for referrals.
➋ 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝟐: 1 on 1 consulting → some folks book hourly consulting with me as they want to get more hands-on Clay support.
➌ 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝟑: Students upselling into agency services - out of 100 students, 1 or 2 book sales calls and request help from B2B Boosted.

I know that I can bump the price to £200 or even £500 and probably make more money from the course, but for the time being I am keeping the price at £100 until we hit 500 members

I am looking at ways to turn this into a community, similar to Nick's Maker School.

When I hear any of these 4 phrases, I disqualify leads 99% of the time.

Phrase #3 is probably the most common one I hear...


1 "I want to hire a Clay agency on a performance-only basis. No set-up fees. Just pay per meeting."

𝐌𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
- Clay costs ~$1k-$1.5k per month to run per company in most cases. 
How is the client expecting us to take the hit with such high fixed costs?
Either they don't understand basics maths (cost of Clay etc), or their expectations are not a fit for B2B Boosted.
- 99% of the time they end up working with freelancers, promising them a big commission, only for the freelancer to then realise that the client has no product-market fit in the first place...

𝐌𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲: 
"We charge a monthly retainer fee. If you are not comfortable with that, I can happily refer you to the Clay experts page , but I am fairly confident that no Certified Clay expert works on a no set up, pay per lead basis. How do you want to proceed?"

2 "Can you set up Clay for us and then get our SDR to manage it"

𝐌𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
Either the SDR's job title needs to be re-branded to "GTM engineer" solely focusing on learning Clay for the next 90 days, or we will end up with a Clay workbook that never gets used in house.

𝐌𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲: 
"Sounds good - how much time does your SDR have to learn Clay and maintain it in-house on a weekly if not daily basis? How many hours per week?"


3 "You’re telling me that best case you will only get 1 in 200 contacts to reply positively to outreach. That’s bad, we get much better cold email conversions now & we have a great product that is super innovative."

𝐌𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬:
If you were getting better positive reply rates in-house, why are we having this conversation now?
At what scale have you sent outreach before? (Bet it still has "Hope this email finds you well")

𝐌𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲: 
"Look, the industry benchmark is 1 reply for every 400 contacts being emailed.
We are saying that 1 in 200 contacts replying positively is our benchmark of success.
So we are 2x ahead of the industry rate & that is POSITIVE reply not just any random reply...
Is this a dealbreaker for you? Can I send you our last 50 positive replies that I put together into a nice Notion page for your review?"

Morale of this post?
The biggest bottleneck with implementing Clay is expectation management and education around what success looks like. 

In the last 4-5 months since Marco joined B2B Boosted, we only had 2 clients churn. Why? Because we started disqualifying clients with unrealistic expectations early on & we started educating those folks that appear to have unrealistic expectations around what Clay is, how much Clay implementations cost and everything of this sort.

Just felt like having a rant about this, but I'd be curious if Mohan, Brigitta, Jani, Penn, Felix and Fabian share my take on this...

Here are 3 lies that I have seen on Linkedin this week:

Lie #1:  “𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐈 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 & 𝐬𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 $𝟐𝟕𝟎𝐤/𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐝𝐨 𝐦𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐲 & 𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐭.”

↳ Instant unfollow - most people posting this have companies with no employees in the first place. 
People posting this should really grow up. 
Would love to tag some people that are guily of this - but will hold back on this occasion...

Lie #2: “𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐬.”
B2B Boosted implemented Clay at 50+ companies. 

99% of the time, sales reps should not be trusted with Clay.

 The 1% of sales reps that can be maybe trusted one day have to spend 3-5 hours every week learning Clay for a month at least.

Lie #3 - and I genuinely thought I was right when I said this...
“𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬. 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫” 
Total BS. 
I have built many flows with Trigify.io, Apify, and other tools, but there's always something that breaks, malfunctions, or needs debugging or fixing. 
So you can never have a truly automated campaign forever.

Or am I missing something here? Mohan, Felix, Penn, Brigitta - are there any evergreen campaigns that I should try maybe?
