Scraping Slack is the most underrated way to steal leads from competitors.

This month was hard. Not because of work, but mainly because:

1. Had my parents come over for a week (meant a lot of “wining and dining” and little actual work being done)
​
2. My girlfriend flew out to Kenya for 2 weeks, leaving me home alone. Delighted to announce that in that time I mastered the art of loading the dishwasher and polished off my knowledge of washing machine drying cycles. Oh, and I finally got to record long YouTube videos without being told to “get a real job” and to “stop using our standup desk 24/7”.

3. I had to pay a 6 month upfront deposit for the flat rent in London - never again though - switching to monthly billings going forward. I mean… who charges a tenant for 6 months up front? (Asking for a friend…)

For months, I've been teaching Clay to folks who are already 10 steps ahead.

Clay certifications are a waste of your time.

Don’t bother with them… and here’s why:

1. Bluntly put, NO one cares about your “automated outbound” certification. It’s super easy to pass, I’ve had folks pass it after 15 mins of watching my YouTube vid…

2. And the annoying thing? Every freelancer adds “Clay expert” to their LinkedIn headline after completing such certifications. Noëmie Jacquemin ✱ can testify to this - she gets SO many imposter GTMEs begging for a full-time role, all because of their fancy shiny certificate that they got in return for creating 1 basic Clay table.

“Don’t tell me the problem, tell me the solution, Tim”…

I hear you. 

Here’s what I recommend instead:

Find a person that wants to have Clay implemented for them. This can be inside of the chats inside communities like Unlock Clay , Clay Cafe from Kellen Casebeer, Clay Bootcamp by Nathan Lippi 🥾, or any other community. 

Don’t just shamelessly pitch your services, but attend the hangouts, listen to the problems that people mention and DM the people after the call offering to help (in return for just getting in some reps with Clay.)

If I’m totally honest, being certified as a Clay expert used to bring B2B boosted 2-3 sales calls per week last year. 

These days we are lucky to get 1 sales call a month. I heard Jani Vrancsik mention the same in our recent conversation - being a Clay expert should not be anyone’s goal, as it does very little to boost your skillset, other than the ability to be able to virtue signal about it.

And this is from being 1 of 95 Clay experts, not 1 in 5k “automated outbound certified” Clay users.

The morale of this post…

Nothing beats working on real people’s Clay tables.

Not just building Clay tables for the sake of getting a fancy certificate.

Clay I love you still, please don’t get annoyed at me for speaking out.

And I know I may come across as too passive aggresive here, but most Clay “gurus” think this, but hardly anyone speaks out.

Clay keeps upselling you to the most expensive AI models.

Every time you run a Claygent enrichment, it recommends Argon or Claude Opus when you probably don't need them.

This is the FASTEST way to burn through Clay credits.

(ask me how I know 😂)

Here's the fix:

Connect Clay to OpenRouter.

OpenRouter is a unified interface for LLMs that automatically selects the cheapest, most effective AI model for each task.

Instead of guessing whether you need Claude for copywriting or GPT-4o Mini for basic research, OpenRouter picks the right model every time.

And it keeps costs as low as possible (unlike Clay's built-in recommendations). 

What happens when you use it:

1. For simple tasks (counting months in a year), it routes to Mistral AI Nemo or Deep Infra Inc.

1. For Web scraping with Claygent, it automatically switches to Perplexity.

3. For copywriting, it'll use Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet.

You don't select ANYTHING.

It just works.

Fair warning…

You need the $349/month Clay plan to use HTTP API.

But if you're already on that plan and burning credits on expensive models you don't need, this is a no-brainer.

Throwback to 2024 when I shamelessly stole Nick Abraham's prompt for writing cheesy cold email openers and people lost their minds 😂

This still works and I use it to this day.

It gets 3%+ reply rates (and will get your prospects to crack a cheeky smile!)

The whole idea was simple…
​
Use a company's SEO description to generate context-aware email first-liners that made prospects smile.
​
E.g. 
​
Flower shop → "I'm sure your inbox is busier than a bee in a flower shop"
​
Roofing company → "I bet your inbox is shingled with messages like a rooftop in a hailstorm"
​
Shopping centre → "I bet your inbox is as bustling as your district on a Saturday afternoon"
​
Corny…. very much so.
​
Effective…. Disturbingly so.
​
The framework was SUPER simple:
​
1. Pull company descriptions using Serper Dev (fraction of a cent per search)
2. Feed into OpenAI 
3. Generate personalized opener for each prospect
4. Launch campaigns at scale
​
Like I said, we still use this today B2B Boosted.

Throwback to last year when I filmed this.

Most people export their LinkedIn connections, stare at the CSV, and have zero clue what to do next.

So agencies charge them £2-3K to "qualify leads" and "personalise outreach"….

… which is basically 10 minutes of Clay work 😂

Here's the workflow I showed in that video:

1/ Export your first-degree connections from LinkedIn (Settings → Data Privacy → Download your data).

2/ Import the CSV into Clay. Now you've got their first name, last name, LinkedIn URL, and current job title.

3/ Enrich each profile to pull work history, company domain, and any other data points you care about.

4/ Scrape their company website and classify them as "fit" or "not fit" based on industry, geography, tech stack, or whatever your ICP looks like.

5/ Score each lead (e.g., 10/10 = B2B software company in the US/UK, maybe recruitment or SaaS sector).

6/ Route the qualified ones into an automated LinkedIn outreach sequence with personalised messages.

This is Clay at it’s best. 

Doing what would otherwise take HOURS if done manually.

Last month I took 10 straight days off work for the first time in the last 4 years
