I'm Octavia. Nice to meet you. 

I do content marketing and copywriting for SaaS. Yes, both. Yes, I do both very well. No, I'm not a Jack of All Trades -- but feel free to DM me and we can debate the semantics.

He said, "What you have is a job, not a career, Octavia." 

He was not my manager, my father, or my therapist. He was a co-worker. We got along. 

And here's the thing. 

He wasn't wrong. In a traditional sense, my career ladder looks more like…as if someone pulled your ladder from under you and now you're lying flat on the ground, looking at the sky. 

I started off as freelance, went in-house in an agency, went in-house in a company, then switched the industry, worked contract and team lead and full-time and everything in between. I covered the range. Most of it. 

I didn't climb, I walked on this whole thing. Heck, I strolled sometimes (and I don't regret it one bit.) And sometimes I ran like hell. But for the largest part, bar from some uneven surfaces, I didn't grow vertically. 

I did, however, grow horizontally. A lot. And not just in terms of my dress size. 

I'm not the same writer who started in 2012. I'm not even the same marketer I was last year. 

And I think that's true for most content people and copywriters — especially in startups. We are fluid. One day you're a Head of, next you're a freelancer. Today you're doing spreadsheets and reporting, tomorrow you're writing sales collateral. One day you're creative, next one you're strategic. 

Dear former co-worker, what you said was wrong not because you said it to me (to hell with my personal feelings.) 

It was wrong because it voiced what so many others thought of the decade of work, skill-building, interview tears, and hope I (and many others like me) put into this: we're just commodities on a payroll.

Seeing someone's path as "just a job" is at the very core of why those businesses replaced (not augmented!) writers with AI in 2023. 

The Dispensable. The Undesirable. The Noisy. Too many questions. Too much time to edit. No direct correlation with ROI, so often. Always whining and always sad in their little corner of the marketing team. Boo, writers, welcome ChatGPT, write me a sales letter that will skyrocket emoji me into the realm of the undying. 

Dear former co-worker whose intentions were not, I am very sure, bad. 

But I do have a career. The word literally comes from the French word for road, path. 

Like so many others in similar "jobs", I carved this path all on my own. 

I still have the mud under my nails to prove it. 

And I ain't washin' my hands just yet.

Wheew! That Cody Sanchez story on getting free consultation from job candidates really went viral, didn't it? 

Good. 

Remember how I was saying content is broken?

I've been around for nearly 12 years. Got my first gig on Upwork, writing a proposal where I told the guy I don't want to go back to working at KFC (I had, for 10 days, that's a different story.) 

He replied, saying "Hehe, hope that KFC gig is going well for you. Let's give you a paid test assignment." 

I wrote an article on relationship advice. And the test was $14 sharp, which, after Upwork fees, bought me and my partner one bottle of soda and two cheap sandwiches. 

But I was over the moon about it. And then more gigs ensued. It sent me spiraling into what I hoped would become a career. 

(Someone told me last year what I have is not a career, but a job, by the way, but that's a different story.)

Fast forward 12 years, tests for jobs are unpaid, and, after putting 10-20 hours of work into a (FREE) test, you don't even get two lines of personalized feedback. 

Those of us lucky enough to find jobs and people who *understand* the tired, the broken, and the need for at least some sort of recognition are rare. And we feel lucky for being in this position -- because we know what's "out there" and we know how hurtful it can be. 

The fact that content is broken is only a small part of the problem. 

The way so much work is done, in so many fields, is broken from the inside -- the gurus, the charlatans, the cookie-cutter solutions, the lack of buy-in and trust on the other side, the AI, the "I saw a Tweet saying [x] doesn't work anymore", the booklet leadership "skills", the lack of commitment, the rush to the exit, the Great Resignation, the Quiet Quitting, and the Great Comeback (or whatever they called it).

 All of it. 

It's a whole system that's broken. (And no, before you throw your Marx at me, hold your horses, I'm Eastern European and nope, it's not "cApITaliSM" to blame, trust us, we've seen the other side and it is dark as heck.)

Codie Sanchez's tweet is just a symptom of a bigger problem. And I think the problem starts (and ends) with critical and creative thinking. Both of them. In tandem. For everyone. Everywhere. All at once.  

Call me crazy, but I think this might be the beginning of something new. Too many people are tired and disillusioned and overworked and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. 

There's only one way to go from here and it's upwards.

Someone once asked me how come my version of social media (outside of LI) is not toxic. It's because I stopped more to look at cute raccoon memes and puppy bellies and scrolled past all the other poo. And now 95% of my Insta feed is exactly what I want to see when I want to kill my brain: cute animals and memes.

Are you here for real learning & networking, or just some digital hocuspocus? 🐒 

I was 19, had just graduated from high school, and most of everyone I knew was leaving town (or moving to another country entirely.) Ugh. 

Anyway, so, I was walking down the street when a woman stopped me. 

"I'll give you a palm reading for 2 lei," she said. (*)

"No, no, thank you," I said, trying to dodge her and see to my life. 

"Someone you care about is leaving," she went on, uninvited. "I can see it in your future." 

"Well," I thought, "A lot of people are." And I gave her my 2 lei. More than anything, because I wanted her to go away before she rained more misfortune telling down on me. I was blue enough as it was. 

You see, the lady didn't read my future (d'oh.) She looked at a young woman who looked maybe a bit sad (spoiler alert, that's just my resting face), and thought of something that could fit the scenario. 

She could have said something nicer like, "Hey, your dream career is just around the corner and you'll spend 11 years working on it before a chatbot comes to sort of make you feel like poop but then things will turn out for the best in the end." 

But she chose to use the kind of vagueness all fortune telling uses: the kind that says things you can overlap with your own thoughts, whatever they may be. 

"Will I find the customer relationship of my life," you will ask. 

"The Sun is setting down only to come back, guard your marbles and sleep tight," the tarot card replies. 

What many marketers and Linkfluencers do is exactly that: they know what you want and they know how to be vague enough about it -- without making you feel like you left their (mis)fortune telling Zoom meeting without any insight. 

Crystal balls reflect your own image, not your future. So -- careful how you look at them and who's on the other side of the murkvoyance session. 🔮 

One of the main reasons I keep talking about creative and critical thinking is because when you foster these, you are less likely to buy into the first palm reader that comes along -- and far more likely to be selective with your crystal balls.

Let's play a game! 🎲 

The rules are simple. I'll give you a sentence, a prompt if you will. You have to add another sentence to it. The two things to keep in mind are: 

🐒 You need to follow the "Yes and" principle (yes, like they do in improvisation shows.) You cannot go against my statement. 

🐒 Your sentence needs to finish the story with a hook, a "to-be-continued."

For example: 

Octavia: "The alert text came in the dead of the night. "Seek shelter immediately," it said. "Pink sparkly aliens have descended." 

You: "So I woke up, looked at my phone, and went to bed without knowing it would be the last time I'd be on Earth." 

That was the example. 

Here's the actual statement you need to work with: 

Billie Jean saw right through his green hair and red eyes: she knew this would be a great opportunity for her to grow, learn, and become "the best version of herself" as those people on LinkedIn used to say.

A week ago or so I made a game post, where people kept building off of a sentence to make a story. 

I was thinking of organizing fortnightly video meetings for little creative exercises like this. Batches of 10-15 people, not on LinkedIn Live, but in Meets or something similar.
