From my start in B2B tech as a Netscape intern, I have a proven track record of building and executing full-lifecycle marketing strategies that drive revenue, brand love, and customer loyalty.

"Do permission-based openers actually work?"

I ask almost every SDR I interview the same question: what’s your opinion on PBOs? And the answer, I think, tells a deeper truth about an SDR's strategy. 

The answers are all over the place. Some swear by them. Others dismiss them as “too scripted.” Most go with their gut.

That gut instinct matters, but now we’ve got the data too.

Across 5 million calls on Nooks:
- Calls with a PBO booked a meeting 13.9% of the time
- Calls without one booked at 5.8%
- That’s a 2.4x difference

And it’s not just one team skewing the numbers. 66 of 74 workspaces saw improvement with PBOs.

Why does it work? Because asking permission isn’t about the words themselves. It’s about setting the stage for a real conversation. It gives the prospect a moment of control, which lowers the wall and makes space for human connection.

That’s the part I listen for in interviews. Not whether someone parrots “I love PBOs,” but whether they understand why they work: focusing on the prospect and building the connection.

Last night SDR Leaders of USA was out in force in Boston. 

The room was filled with seriously smart, energized, and experienced sales development and sales leaders. People who see not just pipeline generation as their primary goal, but also building the next generation of sales leaders.

Here's what struck me at the meet-up:

- AI is everywhere... but in service of the "human" side of selling. Automate what gets in the way so people can focus on developing people relationships. 

- The "people manager" part of the job is harder than ever. Retention, coaching, and keeping reps motivated in this market? That's a real skill.

- Critical thinking is a top hiring filter. Coachability and grit still matter, yep. But leaders want reps who can adapt and problem-solve more than following a script.

The plays that worked six months ago? Already shifting. But the human remains central.
