Yesterday, a sneaky little notification popped up, so small you may have missed it :

That means they'll use your data (profile info, post content) to feed a new AI tool they're building - I strongly suspect some form of post or profile writing tool.  

Urm, nope.

LinkedIn have confirmed that changing this setting doesn't prevent any access to any of LinkedIn's AI features (though let's face it, I'm yet to see a decent one on here).

This week, the Women of AI Agency and AI for Non-Techies hosted an event at the beautiful MBA Group Ltd offices in London. 

In our cosy, roundtable set-up we had senior leaders from Meta, the BBC, Deutschebank, Sainsburys, Virgin and many more.  It was an exciting room of big hitters, and I was keen to share what I've been working on around AI adoption that actually sticks and succeeds.

I brought in Amanda Greenwood, an ex-Deloitte organisational change expert, and Kevin Fortune, data and IT expert to fill some gaps in my knowledge, and some of my own team: Natalie Moreno and Anna Carina Berkman (Architect Anna).

I'm at nearly 75,000 followers
But I still get posts that totally flop 
I still have no idea how the algo works 
I still wince at having to add selfies to posts 
I still feel intimidated by the bigger accounts 
I still struggle to comment as much as I should
I still scratch my head with what to write about 
I still don't have a proper strategy with proper pillars
I still get baffled by how one post with 100 reactions can get 900 impressions then another with 20 reactions can get 5000 impressions, what the actual heck

But I: 

• Post as much as my brain allows 
• Answer all my comments myself 
• Always write my posts from scratch 
• Comment naturally, not strategically
• Try to give as much as I can in my posts
• Write as myself, not as a posh version of me
• Try not to be too salesy and bleurgh

And the result is:
 
Lots of lovely leads
Invites to lovely things
A lovely growing business 

My personal profile is easily our number 1 lead gen tool. 
I've got no idea how I'm doing it. 
But I guess I'd better carry on, eh? 

Does anyone actually understand the algorithm?!

"The Beeb" called last night asking me to comment on this breaking AI news story. 

Scammers are using realistic AI images to create fake websites featuring realistic people like "Patrick and Eileen" here. 

They're using them to build trust and stories - e.g. Patrick had sadly passed away, so they were forced to sell all their jewellery at a discount price.  People who fell for it were sent cheap lumps of resin.

New AI tools allow non-techies to build anything we like right now.

But the dark flip side of that is that power is in the hands of scammers, too.

T͟h͟e͟ ͟c͟a͟p͟a͟b͟i͟l͟i͟t͟i͟e͟s͟ ͟o͟f͟ ͟A͟I͟ ͟a͟r͟e͟ ͟W͟A͟Y͟ ͟a͟h͟e͟a͟d͟ ͟o͟f͟ ͟w͟h͟a͟t͟ ͟t͟h͟e͟ ͟a͟v͟e͟r͟a͟g͟e͟ ͟p͟e͟r͟s͟o͟n͟ ͟r͟e͟a͟l͟i͟s͟e͟s͟ ͟i͟t͟ ͟c͟a͟n͟ ͟d͟o͟.͟

Something slightly alarming was the advice given by the AI expert in the BBC's article. He said some things to look for were:

"𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭, 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴".

Even on the radio programme I spoke on this morning the angle was "that picture is too perfect" or "my kids can spot it's obviously AI!"

But that's wrong - with Nanobanana by Google, or Sora 2, we can create hyper-realistic images of anyone, anywhere, including real places. 

You can't "tell".  
Nobody can.

The images shown in the BBC article are also fairly obviously AI-generated, and may lure people into thinking "hey, I'm safe, if I look closely I'd probably spot that myself". 

So what can we actually do to protect ourselves and our families, especially vulnerable older people, from these scams? 

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜. 

Did anyone see the viral AI homeless man photos doing the rounds? Though it freaked a few people out, I actually thought, as an educational exercise, this was useful. The quality of the images used was strong, so it showed a lot of people what's possible now.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆, 𝗙𝗔𝗦𝗧. 

I'm working right now on an AI literacy program that anyone, regardless of their job, industry etc., needs to know. It includes how to communicate with it, risks and limitations, ethics and of course, safety.

Watch this space for its release. 
I'm going to try and get this out ASAP. 

I'm also building a committee to help vulnerable older people understand what's going on.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆.

There's now no way of telling whether images, voice, video or text is AI-generated anymore. Including live streams. It's not obvious like it used to be.  The em dashes, the extra fingers, the "perfect" faces - they're becoming a thing of the past. 

We need to do our due diligence before buying: check multiple review sites, ask real people, do your research.

What else can we do to keep our loved ones safe?

I hated Copilot for ages.
But I've got to swallow my words.
They've seriously stepped up their game. 

Copilot for 365 is the tool of choice for the majority of businesses, yet most people I meet are struggling to know what to actually do with it.

It's just sat there, that little rainbow icon.  They've clicked, they've fiddled, they've written it off, and then just on with their job. 

But if they knew all the cool stuff it can do...

It's now packed with strong AI features, including the same image generator as ChatGPT, and a knowledge bank to rival Google's.  The trouble is, their own training isn't very good at all - and there's nobody to show you around where things are, or what they do. 

Until now. 😉

First,we got realistic chatbot voices
Then we had interactive podcasts 
And this year, we’re getting interactive video 🤯

AI moves fast, but to be honest - a load of it is just hype. The tools claim lots, have epic landing pages and then deliver a very glitchy load of nothing much. 

But there are moments that make me stop in my tracks. 
Moments that make me run into my husband and show him. 

The first of these was ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. 
• The voices were SO real
• I could interrupt it
• It seemed to understand my tone

The next was Google’s NotebookLM and its interactive podcasts.
• Load up a knowledge bank
• Hit a button to hear two people talking about it 
• Then interrupt them and join the conversation

And now in @𝗦𝘆𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮’𝘀 latest event, we have Video Agents. 
This brand new form of video:
• Allows structured, real-time conversations with video. 
• Is fully customisable: pick your data sources,guardrails and trigger automations
• Is shareable via one link, giving you full control

Imagine a sales training video where you practice your pitch. 
The video acts as your customer - questions, objections, challenges. 
At the end, it scores you in detail. 

Or 

Imagine you’ve got a new starter. 
The video walks them through security, policies, technology. 
Tests their understanding with live questions. 
Then helps them book a meeting with their new supervisor.

I know, I knowwww, it’s not available yet.  The event said “late 2025” so that doesn’t leave long for us to wait, drumming our fingers.  

Don’t worry - they released a load of other sexy things to play with while we’re waiting:

ChatGPT once stopped me having a panic attack. 
It was a tool I'd built myself, with no tech skills.

Should we use AI for our mental health? 
Is it a new way to help thousands in need?
Or is it a really bloody dangerous idea?

I haven't seen a single webinar on AI for mental health, so I decided to create one. 

It's totally free, on 2 October, 11am UK time, online (recordings will be available to all people who register),.

“I asked ChatGPT to do BASIC calculations the other day and it got it bloody wrong!”
-my little sister, this weekend 

It was Sunday, and I was doing the family rounds. 

My sister (a vet nurse, and not a geek like me) has started to play with ChatGPT.  She was finding it frustrating, though. It couldn't even add up.

The day before, in the pub with some pals, a similar thing came up: 

“I asked it for the shop’s opening hours and they were totally wrong! I ended up just going back to Google!”

The feeling amongst my family and friends, and a huge amount of beginners I work meet: 

• I was excited to finally use it
• But the results were disappointing 
• I'm not sure I'll bother again 

…and off they go, back to business as usual. Whenever someone talks about ChatGPT: "it's so overrated - it can't even count!"

The thing is, that's kind of like having no driving lessons, getting in a car, trying to make it move, just hearing a bunch of clunks and screeches and then saying cars are overrated. 

I don't blame them though.

These AI chatbot builders like ChatGPT have given us that little Googley-looking box, in a very Googley sort of page, so naturally - without any other instructions, of course we'll use it in a Googley way.

But it isn't Google. 
It works in a totally different way. 

It's not very good at maths, at writing, at search - all those things beginners presume it's best at. 

It's brilliant at creative brainstorming, research, summarisation, organisation, data analysis, and decision support.

Google needs just a few words. 
AI chatbots need context: lots of it.

Google is a quick wham-bam-done.
AI chatbots work best in proper conversations.

And although it isn't actually difficult (and certainly not techie) at all when you get into it, there's definitely a learning curve.  There are core skills we all need to understand how it works, what it's good at, and crucially how to stay safe using it.
