Since I started wearing a Rolex i've been treated differently

Most people wear a watch to tell the time

For me... it opens doors

- People take me seriously
- People want to talk to me
- People idolise my wrists

First impressions are everything

I was walking down the street this weekend and an elderly man caught my wrist

"Nice watch" he said

"It’s not just a watch…” I told him.

“It’s a symbol of consistency, discipline, and the 4am starts that nobody sees”

He smiled and handed me his business card

I make everyone in my team smoke a vape 

We recently had someone join that doesn't smoke

By the end of the day they were chugging away on a sour cherry ferocious bar

This might sound like madness

Why?

Because culture spreads fast

No matter what you write on the wall or say in the onboarding deck, people don’t copy instructions...

They copy behaviour.

If one person works late, others start staying too.

If one person cuts corners, standards drop overnight.

If one person’s fired up, the whole room starts to lift.

You don’t teach culture.
You breathe it.

So if you’re not careful about the air you create,
don’t be surprised when everyone starts inhaling the wrong thing.

Yesterday I was stopped by a young salesman outside the train station working for "Save the dogs"

Salesman: Sir, I know you're running for a train, can I grab you briefly and if you don't like what I hav to say I'll let you run for the train?

Me: My trains in 4 minutes - hit me

Salesman: We represent Save the dogs a charity that helps home abandoned dogs, do you have a dog?

Me: No

Salesman: Ok well for £3 a month you can help house a dog - is this something you'd like to sign up for today?

Me: Can I be really honest?

Salesman: Of course

Me: I'm not going to sign up today 

Their face dropped and he looked disappointed

Me: But.... I own a company and we're always looking for impressive salespeople - I'm going to offer you a job

"50k basic - your own car, laptop and iPhone and unlimited holiday"

His face lit up

Salesman: "Really?!!!?!!"

Me: "No"



Lesson: Waste my time, I waste yours

In those three months she's:

I can speak from experience 

If I've ever enquired/posted on LinkedIn asking for recommendations 


I get bombarded with connections
I get bombarded with messages
I get bombarded with emails

I very rarely get any calls

Typically the person who picks up the phone wins the business 

Because you're not just buying notebooks

You're buying the service if anything goes wrong

You're buying the consultant who can probably help with other needs and save money



If you're a buyer and you just want a quick quote 

Chances are you're a time waster and it's a race to the bottom

Save your time salespeople

It's the 3rd of July 2021

My best friend and now business partner Zac Thompson had a brainwave

I'd been working on cruise ships back in 2020

COVID hit and turns out there's no need for a singer during a pandemic 

I headed to Manchester needing a job and reverted back to what I knew best

Sales

The next two years involved me working a cliché sales job

Trudging to work through rain and snow thinking

"Is this it?"
"This is my life?"
"Is this what I expected?"

So when the opportunity came to join Zac it was simple...

One day I'd be dead so what's the worst that could really happen

I'm finally proud to say I work in sales

And if you work in sales - so should you

Life will give you choices

Take risks

This morning I held an interview on zoom

They had their camera turned off

I insisted that they turned it on

When he turned on the camera I saw he was sat in a hospital room

He looked embarrassed 

Candidate: "I'm sorry sir, my mother is really sick. I wanted to interview but I couldn't leave her side"

I wanted to hire him right there

On the spot

"Can I ask a question" I said

"Do you promise to work hard?

Yes 

"Do you promise to give it your all?"

Yes

"Will you leave your mother's side?" 

"No sir I cannot "

Then I cannot give you this job ...



I don't offer working from home

SDR: I'll be honest it's a sales call you can hang up or let me run through in 30 seconds

Prospect: "I'll hang up thanks"

SDR: " Ahh is this because of Johan?

Prospect: Johan?

SDR: "Johan up on me and I'll just call you straight back, so how about those 30 seconds?"

Instead of binging Netflix for an hour tonight, do this instead...

1. Open Google Maps.

2. Zoom into the nearest industrial estate.

3. Pick a random warehouse and call them. Say you’re exploring “eco-conscious manufacturing opportunities.”

4. When they ask what you make, say “impact.”

5. Hang up. Immediately buy the domain CandleCoin.io

6. Tell ChatGPT to write a manifesto that merges sustainability with decentralised finance. Post it on LinkedIn with the caption: “Big things loading.”

7. DM three influencers who post about “purpose” and offer them 2% of a company that doesn’t exist yet.

8. Announce a pre-seed round on LinkedIn. Mention the word “oversubscribed” at least twice.

9. Record a car video saying: “People laughed when I said I was digitising light. Now they’re the ones left in the dark.”

10. Two weeks later, release your course: From Candle to Coin: How I Built a 7-Figure Brand in 14 Days.

I can confidently say we cold call differently to 90% of sales organisations... 

The goal is not to push
The goal is not to manipulate 
The goal is not to persuade

It is simply to ask

Do you have a problem?
Are you motivated to solve it?

We use a variety of skills to get people to think deeply 

But the intention is never to be rude

If you can learn the techniques we talk about in "Sales Is Therapy" then you'll know sales does not have to be dirty

If you work in sales, remember...

1.  Cold calling never killed anybody
2.  The more you put in the more you get out
3.  Focus on the tasks that drive you revenue
4.  You can't lose what you didn't have
5.  If you push they pull away
6.   Discipline wins over motivation every time
7.   You don't need to answer every question
8.   People will be rude, that's on them not on you
9.   Your selfworth isn't determined by success
10.   One day you'll be dead and none of it will matter anyway

Sales is incredibly difficult

Being able to face rejection over and over again

But if you get good...

It will change your life

And children are amazing

They can teach us so much about sales

For example

I told him my TAM and he set up a 12 step sequence and already converted 12% into MQLS

How?

By being human

No long voice notes
No hyper personalisation
No free Starbucks vouchers

Picking up the phone

Seeing if they have the problem

And if they're ACTUALLY motivated to solve it

Prospecting doesn't have to be hard

If you're looking to build pipeline get in touch

When cold calling and someone asks you to send them an email say this


"What's an email?"

They'll laugh
You'll laugh 

Then you'll say

"No seriously.... What's an email?"

They'll laugh again
You'll laugh with them

Then you'll say...

"I'm genuinely confused.... What is an email?"

They won't laugh
You won't laugh

It'll go silent and weird

"Do you genuinely not know what an email is?" They ask

"No"

Silence

"Ok... Should we sit down next week then?"

It works every single time

You should spend a minimum of 25 minutes researching each prospect 

Before you pick up the phone 

- Do you know their career history
- Do you know relevant case studies
- Do you know the org chart
- Can you relate with a personal anecdote about something they've posted recently
- Do you know what school they went to


Sadly, many sales people are actually doing this...

Spending amples of time researching before reaching out

Only to be hit with a voicemail anyway

Research = Procrastination

And before all you Enterprise sellers come for me... I'm not talking to you

But for most

The more research you complete the more bias you become

Sales is about the other person 

Ask questions 

Remember you will die

Most salespeople don’t have a pipeline problem...


They have a ‘won’t pick up the phone’ problem.


The world works digitally 

I get it

We order our food from screens
We choose our lovers from screens
We spend all day staring at screens, go home and stare at more screens

So why wouldn't you just prospect using LinkedIn and email?


BECAUSE ITS SATURATED 

People think the phones dying out

It's not

It's the same people that don't want to use it that are saying that

If you had the choice of hiding behind a screen or being rejected my strangers 

I understand why you'd pick the former

But if you have a choice of winning or losing....
