Everyone gets ICP wrong.

What people think ICP stands for is 'Ideal Customer Profile.'

But here's the problem:

Most companies define it like this:

→ 200+ employees
→ Technology industry
→ Series B or later
→ VP of Sales is the buyer

That's not an ICP.

That's demographics and firmographics.

I want you to think about ICP differently.

ICP = Ideal Customer PROBLEMS.

Your real ICP isn't a company size or an industry.

It's the customers who have the specific problems you solve.

I was recently speaking at a conference with 150 CEOs in the room. I asked them: "What problems do you solve?"

Four or five of them answered.

Every. Single. One. talked about benefits. Not problems.

"We help companies scale faster."
"We improve operational efficiency."
"We drive revenue growth."

Those aren't problems. Those are outcomes.

Problems sound like:

"Our reps are wasting 3 hours a day on manual data entry."
"We're losing deals because our follow-up takes 5 days."
"Our managers have no visibility into pipeline until it's too late."

THAT'S the level of specificity you need.

Here's the truth:

There are plenty of 200-person tech companies that don't have the problems you solve.

And there are 50-person companies outside your "ICP" that are DESPERATE for what you do.

Firmographics are just prerequisites. They increase the likelihood of the problem existing.

But the problem is the actual qualifier.

When you take a problem-based approach:

→ Your prospecting gets sharper
→ Your messaging gets clearer
→ Your discovery gets deeper
→ Your win rates go up

Stop defining ICP by company size.

Start defining it by customer problems.

This will change how you target, who you target, how you message and most importantly how quickly you can close.

The biggest gap in sales right now isn't tactics.

It's prospect knowledge.

We've gotten so obsessed with process that we forgot about people.

Think about what most sales training focuses on:

→ Cold calling scripts
→ Email sequences
→ Discovery frameworks
→ Objection handling
→ Product features and demos

All important. All tactical.

But here's what's missing:

Do you actually know your prospect's world?

Not surface level. DEEP.

→ What do they read every morning?
→ Who do they follow and engage with?
→ What podcasts are they listening to?
→ What does their Tuesday at 2pm actually look like?
→ What language do they use to describe their problems?
→ Who do they trust? Who do they talk to?

You should know their world as well as they do.

Read what they read.
Watch what they watch.
Listen to what they listen to.
Follow who they follow.
Talk like they talk.
Yes — borderline dress like them.

All of it matters.

Your tactics will fall flat if they are not tailored to the prospect. 

Because trust doesn't come from a perfect pitch.

Trust comes from a prospect thinking: "This person actually gets my world."

That's what creates confidence. That's what creates certainty. That's what closes deals.

The best reps I know can describe their prospect's daily frustrations better than the prospect can.

They've shadowed customers. They've sat in on their meetings. They've read the same industry newsletters. They've joined the same communities.

That's the edge.

Going into this year, study your prospect more.

Shadow them if you can. Talk to customers constantly. Learn what their day-to-day actually looks like.

Prospect knowledge is the most underrated skill in sales.

And it's something we're focusing heavily on this year.

I'd encourage every team to do the same.

How well do you REALLY know your prospect's world? Be honest, and then level it up!

Founders keep making the same hiring mistake.

"We need a VP of Sales who's taken a company from $20M to $100M."

I hear this all the time.

And it's the wrong thing to vet for.

Here's the problem:

Revenue has very little to do with the actual skill set of the leader.

What matters is operational complexity.

→ How big of a team did they build and manage?
→ How many moving pieces were they juggling?
→ What systems and processes did they put in place?
→ How much rigor did they bring to the org?

There's a massive difference between running a 50-100 person sales org vs. a 20-30 person team.

And both of those have almost nothing to do with the revenue number.

I talk to big companies all the time that hit $100M+ but have zero operational rigor.

Then those leaders get hired into orgs that need structure and discipline.

And they fail.

Because the revenue on their resume didn't match the skill set required.

Here's my advice for Series A and B founders:

Stop hiring VPs of Sales too early.

Instead:

→ Hire a hungry, energetic director or head of sales
→ Pair them with a fractional or consultant for guidance
→ Let them actually build it

You get the energy and hunger of someone who wants to prove themselves.

Plus the experience and pattern recognition of someone who's done it before.

Best of both worlds.

The truth is — most execs who've already hit $100M don't want to go back and do it again anyway.

Apparently I'm one of the few people who keeps torturing myself with early stage.

But that's a different post.

When you're hiring your next sales leader, stop asking "what revenue did they hit?"

Start asking "what org complexity did they navigate?"

That's what actually matters.

I feel so fancy now..

As a child I grew up mostly split between California and Wisconsin 

But as an adult, as a professional, as a man, as a husband, as a father, I “grew up” in Marina Del Rey, California. 

I had the blessed opportunity to randomly be rerouted to LA during some travel plans and get to spend a whole day here. 

It brought me back in so many ways.

Marina Del Rey is where I first started working when I dropped out of college. 

It's where I worked 80 hours a week to make $40,000 a year. 

It's where I used to bike from Redondo Beach to Marina Del Rey at 4:30 in the morning to be to the gym by the time that it opened to be there for clients when I didn't have enough for a car. 

It's where I had my first mentor. 

It's where I read Think and Grow Rich for the first time. 

It's where I had my first child (well my wife had her but you get it) and we needed food stamps to get by. 

It's where I grew as a man, as a professional. It has so many memories for me on so many levels.

It's where I used to walk the beach in the morning at 5:00 when no one was out there, even in the city of LA. To be the only person on the beach, the only person on the pier. It just held so much weight for me. 

To relive that a bit today, brought tears to my eyes.  

I was back on the beach at 5:30 this morning, the only person there. Did my goals. My declaration. 

Fell right back into the mantra I used to say “every day in every way I’m getting better and better” finger taps and all. 

I biked from Marina Del Rey to Samantha, Santa Monica, where I used to work at Patient Pop. Where I built the largest team I’ve ever had. 

It just carries so much weight and meaning and emotion for me. 

It brought me all the way back today and so many amazing feels. 

Happy to be back, happy for who it helped me become and all the memories it helped me generate. 

MDR will always have a special place in my heart.

"People don't buy products. They buy certainty."

Read that again.

Certainty is the most underrated concept in software sales.

You can have the best demo. The slickest deck. The most compelling ROI calculator.

And still lose the deal.

Why?

Because they weren't CERTAIN.

Certain it would work for THEM.
Certain it would get THEM the results.
Certain they wouldn't look stupid for signing the contract.

Here's the problem:

Most reps think an ROI calculator creates certainty.

It doesn't.

In fact, most buyers don't even believe the ROI calculator. They've seen too many inflated projections that never materialized. It can actually make certainty WORSE.

So what actually creates certainty?

→ Connecting it to THEIR world specifically — not generic use cases
→ Checking in for belief throughout the deal — not assuming silence means agreement
→ Giving them resources to build their OWN certainty — not just your word

And the most underused certainty weapon?

References. Case studies. Micro testimonials. Customer introductions.

Not ONE shiny case study nobody believes.

I'm talking about overwhelming them with proof.

"Here's 25 people just like you. Same industry. Same problem. Same skepticism. Here's their before state. Here's their after state. Here's exactly what they did to get there. Pick 5 and talk to them."

THAT'S certainty.

Now I already know the objections:

"You expect buyers to talk to 25 people?"

No. That's the entire point.

When you give them SO many options, they don't NEED to talk to as many. The abundance itself creates certainty. Give them 25 and they might call 2. Give them 2 and they'll want 10.

"How do I even get customers to be references?"

Here's the truth: the vast majority of your customers are willing to do it. We make this way bigger than it needs to be.

Ask them: "Would you be open to taking a call from time to time from someone in a similar situation?"

Most say yes.

Or skip the live call entirely. Get 90-second video testimonials. Before state. After state. Problem they were solving. Results they got.

That's a reference library that scales.

Companies do not leverage references and customer introductions nearly enough.

It should be a foundational move, not a last resort.

Stop selling features. Stop selling ROI.

Start selling certainty.

Sales has a mastery problem, and we are proactively replacing ourselves. 

Too many people got into this profession for the money. The travel. The lifestyle.

Not enough got into it for the craft.

And it shows.

Sellers don't read enough.
Leaders don't read enough.
Sellers don't practice enough.
Leaders don't inspect enough.

We've lost the obsession.

Think about any other high-paying profession:

Surgeons practice before they operate.
Athletes practice before they play.
Musicians practice before they perform.

But sellers? We "practice" on live prospects. On real deals. On actual revenue.

And then we wonder why we lose.

"You can't practice a sales call because every conversation is different."

You can't practice a football game either. Every play is different. Every defense shifts.

But they still practice. Every single day.

Because when you're in the game, your practice pays off.

Here's what concerns me most:

If we rely on AI to tell us what to say, how to say it, and when to say it...

We're not using a tool. We're replacing ourselves.

AI should sharpen your craft. Not become your craft.

The sellers who will thrive in the next 5 years?

→ They'll read obsessively — books, research, psychology
→ They'll practice relentlessly — role-plays, call reviews, objection handling
→ They'll study patterns — what's working, what's not, and why
→ They'll master storytelling — real stories, not AI-generated fluff

The ones who won't?

They'll outsource their thinking and wonder why they got outsourced.

This is a rallying cry.

Get back to the craft.
Get back to practice.
Get back to mastery.

The money follows the skill. Always has. Always will.

Get back to mastery... Your career literally depends on it.

It's one thing to want more.

It's another thing to be worth more.

Everyone wants the shortcut.

The new title. The new comp. The new bonus. The new car. The new watch.

They want to become a new version of themselves without developing a new skill. Without actually being better at anything.

That's not how it works.

Worth follows skill.
Worth follows ideas.
Worth follows collaboration.
Worth follows execution.

Even career-wise — people think longevity is the key.

"I've been here 3 years, I deserve a raise."

No. The only point of longevity is that you're also getting BETTER year over year over year.

If you're the same as you were two years ago skill-wise, you don't deserve more money. You just deserve more time on the clock.

Harsh? Maybe.

But it's the truth.

And this doesn't just apply to reps. Leaders, this is for you too.

You want more? Become worth more.

Here's how:

→ Read more this year. Consume knowledge relentlessly.
→ Buy the course. Invest in yourself before asking others to invest in you.
→ Find the mentor. Get in rooms with people better than you.
→ Practice more. Reps aren't just for reps — leaders need reps too.
→ Seek feedback from those ahead of you. Ego kills growth.
→ Try new things. Measure them. Improve them. Repeat.

That's how you earn more.

Not by wanting it. By being worth it.

Money follows worth and value. 

Become WORTHY of more money and you'll be shocked how it shows up. 

Level up, ya'll.

Standards are not what you say.

They're what you accept.

I just got back from a two-day mastermind with Dan Martell, and this one hit me hard.

We all say we have high standards.

But then something slips. And we let it slide.

Someone misses a deadline. We accept it.

A process breaks. We work around it.

A behavior doesn't match our values. We make an excuse.

That's not a high standard. That's a stated standard.

There's a massive difference.

Another one that stuck with me:

"Systems solve for the now. Standards solve for the future."

Too often we build systems to patch the gaps where standards are missing.

But systems break. People leave. Processes change.

Standards hold.

Here's what this looks like in practice:

For reps:
→ "I follow up within 24 hours. Every time. No exceptions."
→ "I never show up to a call without researching the prospect."
→ "I update my CRM the same day. Not tomorrow. Today."

For leaders:
→ "I give feedback within 48 hours of observing something."
→ "I inspect what I exepect. "
→ "I address underperformance the first time I see it. Not the third."
→ "I make sure to recognize regularly and catching people doing good:

These aren't systems. They're standards.

And when you hold them, you don't need as many systems.

If you want to raise your results, you have to raise your standards.

And then you have to actually hold to them. No matter what.

That's the hard part.

I'm walking away from this experience doing a full reset on our standards.

What we will and won't accept. Written down. Shared with the team. Held to.

Because I've been guilty of this too.

Saying one thing. Accepting another.

That ends now.

One of my favorite email sign-offs is "KD da Connecta."

It means I just introduced two people who needed to know each other.

I probably make 2-3 job-related intros a month. Someone's looking for a role. Someone's looking for talent. I connect them.

But it's not just jobs.

"You want to learn X? You gotta talk to Y."
"You're dealing with that problem? Let me intro you to Z."

I love it. It's one of the most valuable things I do that has nothing to do with my actual job.

Here's the thing though:

Being a great connector requires being a great learner first.

Because I don't have all the answers. Not even close.

People ask me for advice all the time on things where I'm like... "I'm actually learning that from someone else right now. You need to talk to them, not me."

I don't pretend to be an expert in everything.

But I am pretty good at finding the people who ARE experts — and learning from them as fast as possible.

That's the real skill.

→ Know what you don't know
→ Find the people who do
→ Learn from them relentlessly
→ Connect others to them generously

The best networkers aren't the ones with the most contacts.

They're the ones who know exactly who to call for what — and make that intro without hesitation.

Be a better learner.
Be a better connector.

They're the same thing.

For example I'm spending 2 hours with Jordan Crawford this week learning Claude Code. Can't wait. He is so much damn smarter than me at this stuff it's literally scary and intimidating. 

But I'm fired up for it. 

Not only is it going to make me better at my job, for my role, for my people, for my company... I'll also be able to connect more people to him, answer questions better, and know who to connect in the future. 

Stay learning ya'll

Stay connecting. 

Super Curious: Who are you learning from right now? And what are they teaching you?

Most sales orgs have too many tools and not enough results.

Ya'll are spending money in the wrong places.

You've got a CRM. You've got a dialer. You've got an SEP. You've got conversation intelligence. You've got 14 dashboards nobody looks at.

And your reps are still manually researching prospects. Still sending the same generic sequences. Still doing demos that don't convert.

The stack is bloated with the WRONG things. The results are flat.

Meanwhile, the modern buyer has changed.

They want to self-educate. They want data. They want to move on their timeline, not yours.

Or your still using what was cool 2-5 years ago because it was 'on the quadrant' 

If your tech stack isn't built around AI, data-driven decisions, and meeting buyers where they are — you're already behind.

Tech has changed. There are some new up and comers that are just rocking right now

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗠𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗗𝗟𝗘

These aren't tools I just talk about. I actually use them with my team. One of the few "influencers" left that's still in the trenches building.

I get asked all the time my 'stack' so kicking the year off with some of my favorites. 

Here's where I'm focused for 2026:

𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 & 𝗘𝗻𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Bad data = wasted activity. Period.

If your reps are calling wrong numbers and emailing dead addresses, no amount of "more dials" fixes that.

Using: Cargo, ZoomInfo, TitanX

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 & 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The manual stuff that eats your team's time — follow-ups, research triggers, multi-touch sequences — needs to run without humans babysitting it.

Using: Swan AI, Trigify

𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Your AEs are doing the same demo 47 times a month. Most of those demos are qualification calls in disguise.

What if prospects could experience the product on their own time? 24/7. Customized to their use case. Scalable. Repeatable best practices baked in.

Better qualified prospects. Shorter cycles. Higher conversion.

Using: Consensus

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆

"Find me companies that just raised a Series B, are hiring SDRs, and use Salesforce."

That level of specificity used to take hours. Now it takes seconds.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗣𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗧

Stop buying tools because they're "cool" or because your competitor has them.

Buy tools that solve a specific constraint in your funnel.

If connect rate is killing you — fix the data.
If cycle time is too long — fix the demo process.
If reps are drowning in admin — fix the workflows.

Constraint first. Tool second.

The orgs that win in 2026 will be the ones using AI to make smarter decisions, move faster, and meet buyers where they actually are.

Most orgs have it backwards. They buy the tool and then try to find a problem for it to solve.

That's how you end up with 47 logins and the same results.

Be intentional with your stack, ya'll.

Hot take or best practice?

Send candidates a training module before their final interview.

Here's the idea:

Before the role play or scenario call, you send them a recording of an actual training. They watch it. Then in the interview, you see how well they apply it.

I've done it in the past and am thinking of brining it back again as we start to scale up. 

Here's why:

→ You see how well they prep
→ You see how fast they learn
→ You see if they can apply new information under pressure
→ And you're actually giving them VALUE — they walk away having learned something whether they get the job or not

But I know some people will push back.

"You're asking candidates to do work before they even have the job."

I get it. But here's where I think this is a bit different. 

This isn't "build me a 90-day plan for free."
This isn't "create a strategy doc we'll use whether we hire you or not."

This is training. Development. Something they keep forever.

You're investing in THEM before they've invested in you.

They're going to do the role play/scenario call anyway... so why not give them the best shot at it?

And honestly? If a rep or manager doesn't want to watch a 20-minute training to land a job...

What does that tell you about how they'll show up once they have it?

But I want to hear from ya'll.

I'm genuinely curious. 

Is this a smart interview tactic or asking too much?

The gap between average sales teams and top performers isn't effort.

It's leverage.

The best teams aren't working more deals.

They're letting systems do the heavy lifting between conversations.

Think about it:

Your reps are in meetings maybe 3-4 hours a day. Max.

What's happening the other 20+ hours?

For most teams? Nothing. Silence. Waiting.

For the best teams? The deal is still moving.

AI-driven selling is changing the role of the seller.

From reactive meeting jockey → to architect of buyer momentum.

But here's what most people get wrong:

AI doesn't fix a broken process. It amplifies whatever you already have.

If your sales process is messy, AI just makes the mess faster.

If your process is dialed? AI becomes a cheat code.
