Last weekend I spent the weekend in south wales with some of my best pals. 

Great food, zero alcohol, great nature, and meaningful conversations. 

How my weekend's have changed over the last 7-8 years. 😂 

Nature is a beautiful teacher. 

Some of favourite lessons from nature are the following. 

1️⃣  Nature doesn't complain, it adapts. So should we. 

2️⃣  Everything is transient - nature is always evolving and so are we. Every thought, emotion, and feeling is temporary. When we learn to observe our internal experience as energy which passes through us, we can liberate ourselves from our thoughts. 

3️⃣  Oak trees start as tiny acorns. We have to start somewhere. The seed you plant now has the potential to be an oak tree. 

4️⃣  Fire - you only need one ember to reignite to restart your fire. 

5️⃣ Flowers blossom when watered. Relationships work in the same way. If you want good relationships you have to give them time and energy. This is true for work and personal relationships.

"Sweat, Sunlight, and Silence will solve 99% of your problems"

Most of the struggles we face are psychological - they are based on fear, often steeped in assumptions - and nearly always shaped by a perspective that we are we are choosing to  cling on to. 

Exercise, sunlight, and time spent in silence help us shift our internal states, so we can be more creative, strategic, and intentional. 

Even 5 minutes of intense exercise will shift your physiology - it will get you out of your head and into your body. 

When the sun hits your face in summer, how different does London feel? I often do walking coaching sessions in Kew Gardens, as sunlight and nature have the power to shift perspectives, help us think more expansively, and connect to our core truth. Getting away from the laptop, and into nature is one of the most high leverage things you can do. 

"Silence is a super power" - I wish someone told me this 20 years ago. 🤐 

Spending time in silence daily is probably the thing that has had the biggest impact on my life in the last 5 years. 

Undistracted silence helps you to observe the patterns of your mind. What are the thoughts that come up for me everyday? What are my default emotions? What are my triggers? 

The more time we spend in silence, the better we know ourselves, the more aware we are of how our emotions are framing our experience, and the more intentional we can be. 

Silence also teaches us to be present - and presence is the biggest gift you can offer to your clients, to your team, and to your family.

The ability to hear what is being said, to listen for understanding, be non-reactive, and to choose how to respond is a super power.

How can sunlight help shift perspectives?

How does exercise help shift our internal states?

There is better alternative to being busy.....

What did you say the last time someone asked you - how you are? 

My bet is 90% of you, said a version of - "I'm good, but I'm busy".

This has been me for many years - always on, always working, never slowing down to enjoy the beautiful things in life - friends, family, nature, play. 

Here's the thing. 

Everytime I slow down, even a little - I attract better things into my life. More clients, closeness in my relationships - I have better ideas, make better decisions, and new opportunities flow my way. 

There are many reasons for this, but the main one is energy. 

The energy you bring to a client meeting when you are stressed, overworked, and under pressure is not conducive to a positive buying experience for your prospect. 

My experience is, the more present I am - the more people trust me. And the more people trust you, the more they want to buy from you.

When we slow down (ie. reduce the noise) - FYI - the average person has 60,000 thoughts per day - we create more space to think clearly - leading to better decision making, more focus intentional actions, and more consistency. 

We don't have to be busy to be effective. 

In fact, I would argue - if you are busy, it is probably because you are not being effective.

In my programme 'Inner Mastery' I show people how to slow down, focus on what really matters, and build consistent behaviours to help you hit your goals.

What impact does energy have on client interactions and decision-making?

How can Inner Mastery help improve focus and goal achievement?

How does constant busyness affect productivity and relationships?

"Lack of execution has more to do with psychology than laziness"

If you are struggling to get stuff done, but finding yourself unable to execute - it is not because you are lazy. 

Lack of execution is primarily a psychological problem. 

Here are some of the most common ways psychology impacts execution. 

🧠  Fear of failure: For many of us, we avoid starting for fear of not succeeding. It is easier to not try than admit failure. Our brains prefer the comfort of the known.

🧠  Perfectionism: This is the most common I see. Ironically most people are 'proud' of their 'perfectionism' - even though it is the thing that stops them getting the results they want. The pressure to be perceived as perfect means a task that should take 10 minutes takes 2 hours. Resulting in lack of timely execution, and/or burnout. 

🧠  Procrastination: Putting things off due to overwhelm or a lack of clarity on the next step. This is number 2 in terms of the most common. Our brains will prioritise tasks that have a low cognitive load - ie. the things that keep us in our comfort zone. We can make life easier for ourselves by breaking things down into really small steps, having a really clear plan, and reducing the number things on our 'To-do' list. 

🧠  Motivation: We simply might not find the task intrinsically motivating, leading to a lack of drive. If you are feeling unmotivated, it is likely you have a lack of clarity or belief in the task you are trying to engage in. You either are unclear on what you need to do, or at a subconscious level you don't believe the action will get you the results you desire. 

Most people are not inherently lazy. 

By understanding these psychological hurdles, we can develop strategies to overcome the impact they have on our ability to execute.

How does procrastination affect task completion?

What role does motivation play in task execution?

A regular mindfulness practice will make you a better partner, friend, and colleague

You will also likely achieve more in the areas that are important to you - AND find more time for the things you love. 

Practicing mindfulness is about learning to be more conscious - more aware, more intentional. 

When we are more intentional, we find time for our most important pursuits, we are fully present to the moment - and have better relationships with the people around us. 

Meditation is just one way to practice mindfulness - there are many others. 

- Going for walk in nature
- Breathwork 
- Cold exposure 
- Journaling 
- Solitude 
- Listening for understanding (not responding) - this is also a gift to people around you.

Switch the badge of 'busy' to 'conscious and intentional' - you will get more done. 

More is not better. If you are ask most people why they work so hard they will tell you - "so I can have a better life". 

When you push them to go deeper, what they really mean is - "so they can do more of the things they love doing"

Things that bring them peace - Inner peace is the new success. 

Kindness has always been beautiful, we just forgot because we were trying so hard.

Why is inner peace important in the workplace?

We can have the life that we want, but we have to design it that way

How often do you do something you really want to do? 

Most people are so busy being busy, that they never make time for the things that are really important. 

Anyone that knows me, knows I have been guilty of this over the last few years as I have been building my business. 

It is so easy to let work take priority over everything - friends, family, fun, play exercise, health, relationships. 

The lesson I get repeatedly dealt though is this. 

When I slow down, things happen.

I make better decisions - I see things I don't normally see - connect dots I don't normally connect. Build better, stronger relationships. Get more done in less time. 

I focus on high impact, high leverage behaviours. 

I have more presence in every interaction - this leads to trust - better relationships - and more client success.

What impact can 'slowing down to speed up' have on professional success?

How important are relationships in professional success?

A snippet from my workshop last week. 

We were discussing the impact of psychology on performance, why most people don't hit their goals, and how to create high performance states. 

A few gems from the session. 

🧠  If you want to change how someone behaves, focus on changing their beliefs 

🧠  Your core beliefs about yourself, your boss, your environment shape your perspective on everything. And your perspective will determine how you see the world - how you think, how you feel, and ultimately how you behave. 

🧠  95% of the thoughts you have today, are the same as the thoughts you had yesterday. If we know thoughts impact behaviour - we must change how we think if we want to change behaviour. 

🧠  Most people don't hit their goals because they choose their goals consciously, but most of our behaviour is unconscious. If you want to hit your goals more consistently you must close the gap between what you want (consciously) and what you do (unconsciously). 

🧠  Peak performance states are hard to create. Most people focus on the tip of the pyramid before they have covered the fundamentals of sleep, nutrition, daylight, and exercise. Once this is covered, we can look to optimise our psychology, our plan, and our environment - and our mindset.

The session reminded me how important it is to take a step back, sharpen the tools and put plans into practice.

Some highlights:

- 95% of the thoughts we have today are the same ones we had yesterday
- Performance = Potential - Interference
- Humans are emotional creatures, to influence them we must influence how they think and feel
- How our team thinks stems from their perspectives which are driven by their beliefs
- Those thoughts determine emotions, which drive behaviours which result in outcomes
- Flow states most likely to occur 90 seconds after waking
- Low dopamine breaks (staring at a wall!) improve concentration

What do I need to know about Performance Psychology?

Read this if you are leader, or you care about human performance 👇 

I read this in a marketing book, but really this about human psychology & behaviour

- People will behave in line with their irrational urges 
- People will ignore information if it is counter to their existing beliefs
- Most people will trade long term results for short term benefits
- We are all influenced by the culture we identify with

Great Phil, but what is the point? 

The point is.....,

People make decisions with emotion, not logic. No one will buy from you if you don't get them emotionally invested. If you are a leader - you need your team need to emotionally buy into your vision. If they don't, you will always have issues with execution. 

If we want to change behaviour we need to address the beliefs that make the current behaviour make sense to them. If you don't address the source, you will always get the same result. 

As leaders, coaches, sellers, we need to give our team, clients - small wins. If the gap between to action and reward is too long, people will slip to their old way of doing things. 

High status is different for everyone - a high proportion of behaviour is fuelled by a desire to be perceived a certain way. Find out what your team member, client, partner feels is high status, and help them achieve it. This is leadership.

Why is understanding individual perceptions of high status important in leadership?

How crucial is emotional investment in decision-making?

Taking the time to understand & navigate your own psychology will have a bigger impact on your performance than any book, course, or training programme. 

Performance at the highest level has more to do with mindset then skillset. 

People fail, not because they don't know how. 

Most failure comes down to a lack of clarity & belief in the solution (leadership/coaching challenge), poor impulse control, an inability to navigate difficult emotion (EQ challenges), poor confidence (self-belief) - and/or the 'why' is not strong enough (mindset issue).

Most challenges are psychological. 

Fix the psychological issues and people will be resourceful enough to develop the skills they need to succeed. 

"We can have more impact on the people we lead if stop telling them what to do, and change how they think".

How can understanding psychology improve performance?

How is it nearly May? 

We are about to enter month 5 of 2024 🤯 

Most of you will be wondering - 'where the hell the last 4 months went?'

Am I on track to hit my target this year? And, what do I need to do to close the gap?

.... 

My question is - 'How many of you are looking at your goals outside of work? 

- Maybe you think you don't have time to look at non-work goals when you are behind target? 

I wholeheartedly DISAGREE - this is the wrong approach. 🚫 

The act of revisiting our REAL GOALS - the primal goals behind the superficial goals we set is what gives us the motivation and resourcefulness to execute. 

I call this understanding the 'Goal behind the Goal' - what is the real reason you want to hit your target, earn £60k-£80k in commission, and/or get that promotion.

When we work in sales it is easy to forget what we got into it for - particularly as we start earn over a certain number. 

Connecting to your more meaningful goals, revisiting your long term vision, and asking yourself the right big questions will allow you to find the inspiration required to execute. 

If you are struggling to find motivation, feel uninspired or disconnected to your work - doing more of the same is not going to get you the results you want. 

A lack of motivation is a psychological challenge - one that can only be solved from the inside. 

Think about how inspired you feel when you are working on something you do care about. What if you could feel like this when you are working on some of the less exciting projects?

This is all psychology, it is all mindset. 

Understand this & we can change how we feel about almost anything.

No finger-pointing.

Identity is the strongest predictor of human behaviour. 

If you have ever wondered why someone is behaving in a way you just can't understand. Maybe they say they want [x], but they keep doing [y]. 

What they say they want and how they behave - is unaligned. 

If you are sales leader, you definitely have people in your team like this. 

If you are a salesperson / individual contributor, you have probably got frustrated with yourself when you haven't been able to follow through and execute on your intention. 

I will let you in to a secret. 

You are not alone. This is a human condition. 

If there is one thing psychology has taught us about behaviour - it is that people behave in line with how they identify. 

If you identify as someone who is more of a strategists than an executor, you will behave in line with this. 

If you identify as someone who is resourceful and gets shit done - you will find a way to make progress even when you don't want to. 

If you identify as a perfectionist you will probably take ages to do everything, and then complain there is not enough time to get everything done. 

If you identify as someone who gets up early and works out - you will more likely hang on to this habit longer than someone who says they are not really a morning person. 

Our identity is essentially a collection of beliefs we have about ourselves. Some are conscious, others are unconscious - but what is 100% true is - your identity drives your behaviour. 

If you want to change a behaviour - first look at the identity fueling the behaviour. 

If you are a leader of people - a big part of the job is helping your team feel successful, giving them the belief that they can execute on your vision.

The above are some of the most common I see in the world of sales and entrepreneurship.

Our beliefs our the lens through which we view the world. They determine how we experience life - our perspectives, our internal story, how we feel day to day. 

We should be careful what we believe.

A belief is what we know to be true because experience has made it relevant to us. However, it is rarely a universal truth. Just our past experience imposing itself on the present. 

If you want to change your outcomes, change your beliefs. If you want to change your beliefs, go out and have experiences that reinforce the new belief.
