There's a lot of sh*t you have ZERO control over in your career (how to become un-fireable): - Recessions - Failed products - VC funding drying up - Poor company leadership We've seen it in 2023 and 2024... The company that calls you "family" one minute is laying you off on Zoom the next. Not much you can do it about it. But here's what you can do to ensure your success, no matter what happens. Instead of working on your job... Start working on your skills. • Sales skills • Writing skills • Leadership skills • Communication skills • Technical skills • Soft skills Skills are 100% transferrable. Become the person who could get fired, lose everything, have it all back in a year... 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀. In 2022 I quit my 9-5 job and earned six figures in my first year as a solopreneur... But it wasn't luck. I tried quitting my 9-5 in 2019 and made every mistake in the book: • No audience on LinkedIn • No idea how to get clients • No clue how to sell & monetize I'm hard-headed so I tried again in 2022. This time with leverage: • Side hustle (proof of concept) • Small but engaged LI audience • Social copywriting and sales skills And most importantly... I had a "no fail" blueprint. In the latest edition of The Writerpreneur newsletter, I share the blueprint with you: "𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝟲𝟲 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿" Learn for free here: https://lnkd.in/e5NegpHa
Travis Kalanick co-founded Uber in 2009. After building to $50B, he got kicked out. Kalanick is known as an aggressive, win-at-all-costs entrepreneur that rubbed people the wrong way. In 2017, Kalanick was forced out as Uber’s CEO. • Blamed for Uber's toxic culture and PR disasters • Pushed out of the company he built from scratch • He watched from the sidelines as Uber IPO'd From the outside perspective, he had a full public downfall that people in tech loved to root for. But everyone loves a good comeback. Uber made Kalanick a multi-billionaire. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he put a large chunk of his Uber wealth into the next BIG idea: Ghost kitchens—commercial kitchens designed for delivery-only restaurants. • Invested $300M to launch CloudKitchens • Raised a $400M series A round of funding • Quietly built a global network of food delivery hubs What's the lesson? Sometimes you eat sh*t as an entrepreneur. But you only truly fail if you quit. 99% of the founders I admire take big swings, get punched in the face, then get up and do it again. Failure is part of the process. Perseverance is the key to long-term success. Are you inspired by entrepreneur stories like this? -- Thanks for reading! Delete this 1 phrase from your vocabulary if you want to accomplish BIG goals: "I can't ___" As soon as you let this phrase leave your lips...you've lost. It's a seed planted in your brain. • I can't write • I can't be an entrepreneur • I can't reach financial freedom • I can't overcome depression & anxiety Believe that you can, and maybe you will. Believe that you can't, and it's over before you had the chance to start. 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹. Each time you say "I can't ____" it deepens the groove in your mind, turning to reality. Try this over the next week: Train your mind to be aware every time you say "I can't ___" Reply with "Why not?" You'll be surprised at the excuses that come up, sounding silly out loud. • I don't know how (then learn) • I don't have time (make time) • I don't want to fail (impossible) • I don't know where to start (nobody does) This won't solve all of your problems for you But it will prevent you from poisoning your mind and staying stuck where you are. Instead, use sefl-talk as a tool. Deal?
You don't need the perfect idea. You need a good idea with consistent execution. "I want to make a lot of money" "I want to be in the top 1% of earners" "I want to build something that lasts generations" I promise that you can, even without a Harvard MBA. But only if you're willing to eat a few sh*t sandwiches every week for a few years. Let's be honest: most people quit when it gets hard. Nothing great was ever built without: • Struggle • Long hours • Lack of clarity • Trying stuff and failing Your dream life or career won't just appear. It needs to be built over time. And it won't be pretty. I've figured this out and learned from people ALOT wealthier and more successful than me. Nothing Great comes Quick or Easy. And you're better for it. I wish someone told me this earlier but it's something I think about every single week. Who are your real friends? Make a big positive change in your life: - Get in shape - Start a business - Grow an online audience - Stop partying every weekend Doesn’t matter what it is. Here's the question I asked before quitting my 9-5 to build in the creator economy: Same question I'd ask for any big goal. Before you start chasing: • More money • More followers • More career flexibility • More fulfillment and happiness You can have them all. But first, ask yourself: "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘆?" - Looking stupid posting on Linkedin - Building for $0.00 alongside your 9-5 - Feeling like an imposter 99% of the time - Spending energy on something that FAILS - Working on one goal for years of your life Success isn't a linear step ladder. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼: ✅ Find your own path ✅ Prepare for it to be hard ✅ Pay the price and you'll get it Results don't come overnight, which is what everyone wants instead of the reality. Hard work that compounds over time. Patience is the great differentiator. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨?
How I went from a 9-5 to entrepreneur in 12 months: (The 2025 "I Quit My Job" Strategy) 1. Launch a side hustle (Month 1-3) Don't reinvent the wheel. Turn your existing skills and knowledge into income. - Coaching - Consulting - Freelancing - Digital products You'll learn the basics of marketing, offers, sales, client success, running a P/L, and more. This is the foundation. 2. Grow to $1,000 a month. (Month 3-6) Come up with a simple, reverse-engineered plan. - How many clients do you need? - How many outreaches a day? - How many posts a week? Once you hit $1,000/mo, aim for $2,000. Then $3k, then $5k, then $10k. Don't overwhelm yourself with a $100,000 goal. Build and grow slowly over 3-6 months. 3. Replace your baseline expenses. (Month 6-12) Jumping full-time into entrepreneurship comes with pressure. Before you do, figure out how to: - Achieve proof of concept - Grow your side hustle income - Save 3-6 months of bills in cash - Replace your monthly salary or bills It might take longer, but giving yourself 6-12 months of building is the way to go. Jeff Bezos sold books online out of his garage. The first Apple computer was built by hand by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak (also in a garage). Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook as a project from his dorm room. Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia rented air mattresses to pay their rent which turned into the idea for Airbnb. Phil Knight sold running shoes out of his trunk that he imported from Japan which launched the idea for Nike. Shopify exists because Tobias Lütke and Scott Lake wanted to sell snowboarding equipment online but couldn’t find a good e-commerce platform. Most successful businesses started with: • One problem to solve • One client or customer to try it • One month at a time of figuring sh*t out Don't aim to "scale to the moon" until you've gone through the non-scalable phase of growth. Start with simplicity. If you're making $0 → aim for $1. If you're making $1k/mo → aim for $2k/mo. If you're making $10k/mo → aim for $15k/mo. Comparing yourself to founders 10 years ahead is motivating, but it can also slow you down. 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: It's okay to be where you are now. Here's the difference between trying to look rich and actually getting wealthy: (from 6 years advising millionaires) Social media is the best example. Do you want to be the person who: • Pays for followers • Flexes with rented mansions • Looks perfect on every level of life This is IG's idea of looking rich. 90% of it is total B.S. Chasing this idealistic idea of getting rich quick with no hurdles is a mistake. Ask any millionaire and they will tell you: • Building wealth is hard • Building wealth takes time • Building wealth requires failure For me, wealth isn't flexing on IG. It's all about: → Loving what I do → Embracing challenges → Learning and growing daily → Creating freedom for me and my family If you get discouraged by the barage of fake rich people on social media... Understand that isn't the real goal. It's a trap. 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 = 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝘂𝗹𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Define your version of a wealthy life and don't chase the IG version of "rich" What are your thoughts on this, LinkedIn?
You don't have to chase jobs in 2025... 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀↓): 1. Start writing & hitting publish on Linkedin 2. Develop the creator > consumer mindset 3. Teach something and infuse it with story 4. Figure out a way to be hyper-consistent 5. Listen to your audience as you grow 6. Play 10-year > 10-week games 7. Fight thru imposter syndrome 8. Try to enjoy the process 9. Meet tons of cool people 10. Unlock opportunities I got my last 3 jobs with LinkedIn DMs. I earn more writing online than my W2. I meet new people every single week. I built a fully remote internet business. I unlocked A LOT more freedom. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱... Here's your nudge. How do you expect to become a better version of yourself without change? Your life is constant change. Your career is constant change. Your evolution is constant change. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗼 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁? Schools, standardized tests, and rule-following brainwashed you to believe: • Failure is bad • Change is bad • Mistakes are bad • Resume gaps are bad But that doesn't help you in the real world where things are constantly changing. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. It's an uncomfortable feeling. Something to run towards, not away from. Next time someone says: "You've changed" Say "Good, that's the goal" Your old friends might not like it. Your old co-workers might not like it. Your old classmates might not like it. But as long as you are constantly evolving and improving as a person, who cares? Change makes people uncomfortable. It also transforms your life and attracts: • More money • More fulfillment • More time freedom Change is essential. Don't fight it, embrace it. Run towards it. You're going to fail in your career. My failures led to incredible opportunities that 99% will never know... (because they let failure hold them back) The "Learning" Career Path ↓ - Chose Finance for passion and money - Worked for dream job. Got it. Miserable - Passion faded, learned valuable skills - Quit 9-5 to be a Solopreneur in '19 (failed) - Pivot to FinTech Consulting + start writing - Make my first $1 writing online while 1099 - Pivot back to W2 as an "intrepreneur" - Learn to build a business in my W2 - Try Solopreneurship again in '22 - No turning back to W2 land Tons of failures along the way. Growth that felt like sh*t in the moment... But the lessons I learned were invaluable: → How to be a good teammate → How to ask for help (drop your ego) → How to do sales and marketing online → How to write, speak, and communicate → How to make money with no boss or W2 Learning from failure levels you up FAST. And the best part: If you fail, you can try again. What have you learned from "failing" in your career? Share your advice ↓ -- Btw if you like this post, you will probably enjoy my blog: antcarlton.substack.com
One of the greatest career lessons I've learned: (the investment that will 10X over 10 years): Stop trying to do everything yourself. • Your career • Your business • Your personal brand • Your financial success There's a way to gurantee growth in each area. It doesn't involve doing everything solo. It doesn't involve reading books in dark room. It doesn't involve personal development with magic. I've met C- students who went on to built 8-figure fortunes and businesses. I've also met Harvard grads who had mediocre success in comparison. Are you the smartest person in the room, friend group, or company team? That's the problem. If I've learned anything from advising successful entrepreneurs, investors, and executives... It's this: They don't become wealthy with just a degree. Even long after graduating from college, they understand the value of investing in: • Mentors • Coaches • Self education YOU = Better Returns than S&P 500 Don't sleep on self investment and learning from those who are 2-3 steps ahead of you. This is the secret of the "successful" people I've met. They don't do it alone. They pay for shortcuts by way of mentors. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘁? - Anthony Carlton
Here's a secret I've learned working with people worth $1M-$100M+: Money is abundant. Opportunities are abundant. If someone else is successful at something you want to try... It doesn't mean you can't win, too. It means you can put your spin on it and: • Find a niche • Learn from them • Follow their advice Apple is one of the best examples of this. They weren't first to build an MP3 player. They weren't first to build a smartphone. They weren't first to build a laptop. In fact, the first to market is rarely the most successful after 10-20 years. There are 7.9 billion people on earth. You only need a few of them to know, like, trust, and buy from you to be successful. Want to write online? Want to build your brand? Want to start a business? Someone else has probably already done what you want to do. That's a good thing. Abundance mindset will take you far. Scarcity mindset stops you before you start. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙘?
I've learned more building a 6-figure creator business in 22 months than my 4 year college degree. The biggest lesson learned: Most things you want in life are a skill that can be learned. No permission required. Want to make more money with a side hustle? Learn the skill of online business. Want to publish consistently on social media? Learn the skill of content creation. Want to start investing in real estate and stocks? Learn the skill of personal finance. Want to learn how to stop burning out at work? Learn the skills of lifestyle and career design. You probably don't need: • More degrees • More certifications • More time or experience You need to learn and acquire high-value skills. And most skills can be learned from YouTube, podcasts, coaching, and LOTS of reps. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿-𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻? In 2022, I quit my 9-5 and didn't look back. The hack that helped me 5X my income? • Start a coaching business in 2019 (failed) • Start writing online in 2019 (paralyzed by fear) • Start posting on LinkedIn in 2021 (nobody read it) • Start ghostwriting for CEOs in 2022 (first $10k solo) • Start a mastermind in 2023 (mediocre turnout) This short list doesn't cover 100 other "failures" of different sizes and shapes. But that's the game. What did it get me? • The skill of trying and learning • The skill of persevering through mistakes • The skill of writing through 10,000 hours of reps • The skill of sales, offer creation, and client service The other day I got a DM asking: "What's the fastest way to start a business and quit my job?" Ditch the hacks. Instead, aim to fulfill the success equation: Skill Acquisition × Time × Consistency (Effort) = Unstoppable Growth There is no hack. Just compound interest—paid in skills, not dollars. And if you keep showing up, the money follows. Have you found this to be true in your career?
