I've been a founder. I've been a head of growth. I've worked at Powered by Search (one of the best known SaaS marketing agencies). I've worked at Podia – a mostly bootstrapped startup.

And here's what I've learned:

Between $1-10M ARR SaaS companies often see plateaus and lose the energy from their growth/marketing efforts.

Acquisition is a hard dr*g – and you should stay away from that kind of thing

Two companies with the same starting traffic, same starting ARPU: 

Company A focuses on increasing traffic 10% every month 

Company B starts by improving conversion, then improving ARPU, then does traffic 

By month 3 Company B is not only better off in terms of MRR added but they're going to see the value compound significantly faster over time

Small inputs compound. 

That's true of everywhere in life. 

In my day job, I see it in marketing. People who make small, consistent deposits in marketing tend to do a lot better over time. 

(That's why I like lifecycle and email so much, by the way.)

Early this year, I decided that I wanted to make a change in my life. 

In 2024, I got a bit lazy in many areas of life. And it really affected my mental and physical health, frankly. 

One of the changes that I made was to start regularly going to the gym after doing the school run in the mornings. 

I noticed that there was a correlation between whether I spent 30 minutes or so doing some physical activity around other people and the probability of me having a good day at work. 

I started to build a habit of going, and that really compounded over time to the extent where I'm in the best shape of my life. 

I didn't set out to do this much work out in a year. In fact, it's probably partly because I accidentally paid for an annual subscription to the workout app that I use vs a monthly one that I'm still going in part. 😂 

But anyway, all of that to say, small inputs compound over time 

I'm glad I made a small but regular investment in my health, in my work, in my family, and in my relationship with my wife. 

There's still a couple of months to go in the year – but I'm already extremely grateful for what has happened this year
