How important are human interactions in the workplace?

Back in '99 in one of my favorite sales trainings, a Sandler training mantra got lodged in my mind, "When you're telling, you're not selling". Over time, I've learned to adapt that principle with a twist.  
 
Buyers are evolving.  You can't expect to play the "hide the feature" game or keep product information hidden until they are "qualified".  
 
Potential buyers come with homework done. They've researched, compared, and analyzed already. So when they ask for a feature rundown or a demo, they aren't looking for a sales pitch. They want answers. 
 
You can still stay away from telling them irrelevant information or telling them they have to answer questions first to get the the next step.  
 
You can 'sell by telling'', but with a twist cater to their questions, tie responses to product features and functions, and focus on relevancy. Do the demo.  Keep the answers crisp to the topic.  Then earn the right to listen.  
 
I still believe in the mantra "When your telling your not selling"...but its more nuanced then it was 25 years ago.
