Just before I was about to leave, I said ya know: I'm gonna go grab a coffee and listen to some war stories in the Heroes Hall with some of the old timers. 

So, I did just that ... 

As soon as I sat down, a Vietnam Veteran evil-eyed me ... No more than 10 seconds went by before he proceeded to grill me ... as if I were a new private ...

U Airborne? ... as soon as I said yea ...

I was a "paratrooper" in the 82nd ...

He instantly got red and told me I didn't know {_ h _ t} about being a paratrooper until I had jumped into combat like him. Note to self***Do not use "paratrooper" terminology again ...

He spoke of Operation Junction City & Vietnam, his stories had me on the edge of my seat, 2 hours had passed before I knew it. I'd definitely do it again and it was an honor!

Note*** When he had returned from Vietnam he made his jump school graduation wings into a ring that is today his wedding ring!

This all went down in the Heroes Hall over coffee. Need I say more ... They even gave me a nickname- NEWB 💥

Back story …


@Michael Quinn transitioned out of the Army a few months after I did. While our journeys were different, they ran parallel in many ways. Similar in purpose, unique in path.

We both shared a deep passion for serving the military community and connecting the dots that often get missed during the transition.

Flash back to our first call together, nearly eight years ago … 

“Hi Justin - this is “Sergeant Major” Quinn” … 

I chuckled, this dude (LOL). 

Not even a minute in, he launched into a classic “SGM rant” - fired up about the broken transition process and already making it his mission to fix it.

I nodded in agreement.

My experience? 

A complete mess, but that story is for another time.

Fast forward to 2019 (picture shown, that’s me #nobeard

If you're a veteran looking to make a career transition, know that your military service is only part of what makes you a valuable candidate. 

Your leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and other skills are in high demand in the job market. 

Focus on highlighting the skills and value that you can bring to a company. 

Here are 5 tips you definitely should master in any career transition.

Take these steps: 📝

1. Dress for the job you want, not the job you left behind.

2. Remove the military jargon from your resume and LinkedIn profile.

3. Use keywords  from job listings in your resume and LinkedIn profile!

4. Don't lead with "transitioning" in your headline. Lead with who you want to become and are~

5. Smile in your profile picture to be more approachable. Please no more DA Photos or deployment profile pictures.

Remember, while appreciation for your service is important, it won't get you hired.

This photo sums it up-they said: I'd get trained, educated, it'd be adventurous, good money, get to serve my country, and the travel is great 🤔

A few months back, I did something most business owners wouldn’t do.
I walked away from a very well known defense company client.
She came into the meeting stone faced. 

said she was shifting our placement fee arrangement from 20% to 15%.

And, 

requiring a 180 day talent guarantee versus the standard 90 days.

ME: Thinking WTF?
WHY…

“Because I’m the new sheriff in town.”

When I asked if she would reconsider, she said, “All the 3rd party agencies are starting from scratch with me."

Didn’t value our efforts we put in over the past 18 months.

I didn’t particularly feel valued at all.

This was a major RED flag for me.

I mentally disengaged.

Gave it a few days to think it through.

Then politely declined the future of our partnership, sharing they weren’t the right fit for our organization.

3rd party recruitment firms aren’t your enemy. We should be your secret weapon.

It isn’t us versus you, or your recruiting team!?!

We aim to be a valued extension of your recruiting efforts.

If I find this isn’t the case.

Last month, I got a late-night text (9:42 PM) from a Cyber Engineer I’d placed with a Tech GOVCON client a year ago. He was stressed!



TS/SCI-FSP clearance
Sharp as a tack
Navy veteran

the kind of guy who kicked down doors and could lock down a network blindfolded.

Candidate: “Justin, I’m out bro. Submitted my notice today.”

Me: “What!? They loved you. What happened?”

Candidate: “They’ve been dumping a ton of extra work on me—stuff not even in my lane. 

no raise
no backup
just ‘deal with it

I’m fried. 

Found something else.”

I dug deeper. 

Reached out to my contact at the company—an Executive Leader there who had raved about how much impact he had brought to their organization. 

Me: “You lost your top cyber guy man? What happened?”

EL: “Yeah, hate to see him go. The budget's locked, though. 
Couldn’t up his pay $25k, and deadlines are brutal.”

Me: “You couldn’t up his pay? Cleared talent with a Full Scope Poly isn’t sitting around waiting for you to call.”

EL: “We’ll find another. Plenty out there, right?”
Me: Nope. Not even close to his expertise.

EL: “Can you start a search for us today?”
Me: “Based on the new individual's salary you do know that will cost at least $40k, right?

Here’s my take:

Exceptional talent is an investment
You know what you have.
If they are good, I-N-V-E-S-T in them!

Hiring new talent may be a gamble.
It also takes most new talent a month or two to ramp up to full speed.

Just because you may save $25K-$50K in this scenario over the first few months, if you hire bad, you LOSE.

If you hire bad the second time, you may need to phone a friend.

RANT: 

TS/SCI+ pros—developers, engineers, data scientists, cyber experts—they’re not plug-and-play. 

You don’t just “find another” when you’ve got someone vetted to the hilt who delivers. 

Burn them out, and they will bolt. 
Fast.

Takeaway?

Invest and retain in your great talent.

Cleared talent is literally gold in GOVCON. 

Overwork them without respect or reward, and you’re not just losing 1 hire, maybe more.

They’ve got options, Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland markets move quick.

Value them, or lose them.

Enjoy the hard times in those moments, you'll cherish them when you look back.

HM: So, why did you leave your last job? 

Candidate: 

Oh, I just wanted to make more 💵 dough. You know, the green stuff.

HM: How do I know you won't leave this job for more money?

Candidate:

Well, that's all up to you and your negotiating skills, isn't it? I mean, I'm open to discussing salary and all that jazz. But hey, if you can't give me the green light on the green stuff, I might have to move on to greener pastures. No hard feelings though, right? 😅

I had thought the HARDEST part was behind me. Then came Entrepreneurship…

After 20 years in the Army, I figured I had seen it all:

-Learning by trial and (plenty of) error.

I thought I had resilience, discipline, and adaptability mastered.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

1️⃣ Lead with purpose. If your “why” isn’t clear, the “how” will crush you.

2️⃣ Get comfortable being uncomfortable. Growth lives outside your comfort zone.

3️⃣ Resilience is the name of the game. You will fall, but you will get back up.

4️⃣ Adaptability isn’t optional—it’s survival. Pivoting is part of the process.

5️⃣ Balance isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline. Burnout helps no one.

6️⃣ Lean on your team. You can’t do it all, and you shouldn’t have to.

7️⃣ Celebrate the wins—big or small. Those moments keep the fire alive. 


Entrepreneurship is a different kind of hard, but it’s also the most rewarding.
