Last month, I got a late-night text (9:42 PM) from a Cyber Engineer I’d placed with a Tech GOVCON client a year ago. He was stressed! TS/SCI-FSP clearance Sharp as a tack Navy veteran the kind of guy who kicked down doors and could lock down a network blindfolded. Candidate: “Justin, I’m out bro. Submitted my notice today.” Me: “What!? They loved you. What happened?” Candidate: “They’ve been dumping a ton of extra work on me—stuff not even in my lane. no raise no backup just ‘deal with it I’m fried. Found something else.” I dug deeper. Reached out to my contact at the company—an Executive Leader there who had raved about how much impact he had brought to their organization. Me: “You lost your top cyber guy man? What happened?” EL: “Yeah, hate to see him go. The budget's locked, though. Couldn’t up his pay $25k, and deadlines are brutal.” Me: “You couldn’t up his pay? Cleared talent with a Full Scope Poly isn’t sitting around waiting for you to call.” EL: “We’ll find another. Plenty out there, right?” Me: Nope. Not even close to his expertise. EL: “Can you start a search for us today?” Me: “Based on the new individual's salary you do know that will cost at least $40k, right? Here’s my take: Exceptional talent is an investment You know what you have. If they are good, I-N-V-E-S-T in them! Hiring new talent may be a gamble. It also takes most new talent a month or two to ramp up to full speed. Just because you may save $25K-$50K in this scenario over the first few months, if you hire bad, you LOSE. If you hire bad the second time, you may need to phone a friend. RANT: TS/SCI+ pros—developers, engineers, data scientists, cyber experts—they’re not plug-and-play. You don’t just “find another” when you’ve got someone vetted to the hilt who delivers. Burn them out, and they will bolt. Fast. Takeaway? Invest and retain in your great talent. Cleared talent is literally gold in GOVCON. Overwork them without respect or reward, and you’re not just losing 1 hire, maybe more. They’ve got options, Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland markets move quick. Value them, or lose them. 😊

Early on in my younger days, I was taught that if you yelled loud enough your troops will listen and do exactly what you say. Horrible advice. I learned rather quickly that leadership was much more complex than yelling at the top of your lungs and waving your arms … especially during deployments. Let’s fast forward to now. Heres 14 key leadership mindset elements to creating high performing teams. 1.) Learning from my failures … take the time to identify where you didn’t hit the mark and how you can get better. 2.) Knowing my people and myself … so I could understand our strengths and weaknesses. 3.) Vision of where we are headed … so we could create a shared understanding throughout our team. 4.) Transparency … giving credit to others and knowing why and how I as a leader had come to a decision. 5.) Trust … place trust in those around you. 6.) The darkness that once consumed me started to dissappear ... Starting in Nov of 2020, my life changed drastically ... for the good. Ever since the first day that my wife and I stepped foot into our Orthodox Christian Parish ... His light started to radiate and grow within me. In early 2021, we were baptized together ☦️🙏❤️ For the 20+ years prior ... I battled daily against "the skeletons in my closet" and somehow managed "the darkeness" that clinged to me because of the experiences I endured throughout my military service. I FULLY understand, why we lose 22 a day. Honestly, push-up video campaigns could never fix me. The once a year, Battle buddy status check phone call to see how I'm doing, didn't fix it either. and calling a 1-800 number, to talk to Joe Schmo, who I do not know or trust, isn't going to happen. Ya know what did actually fix and repair me? It was ... me ASKING Him, our Lord Jesus Christ to HELP me. Dedicating my life to Him. ... giving Him permission to work on repairing me ... and being at my side, daily. The story 👆 and the message 👇 is the most valuable treasure, I could EVER share with you. Anchor your life in God daily. He will guide you. He will fulfill you. He will provide for you. Put your trust in Him. Grow a relationship with Him. He will carry you when needed 🙏☦️ God be with you every step of the way.
I went to the VA facility to get some dental work done. Note*** I was wearing my camo hat with the flag patch on it. Just before I was about to leave, I said ya know: I'm gonna go grab a coffee and listen to some war stories in the Heroes Hall with some of the old timers. So, I did just that ... As soon as I sat down, a Vietnam Veteran evil-eyed me ... No more than 10 seconds went by before he proceeded to grill me ... as if I were a new private ... Which war? Branch? What kind of hat is that? What years did you serve? Disabled Vet? What percentage? Which Units? U Airborne? ... as soon as I said yea ... I was a "paratrooper" in the 82nd ... He instantly got red and told me I didn't know {_ h _ t} about being a paratrooper until I had jumped into combat like him. Note to self***Do not use "paratrooper" terminology again ... He spoke of Operation Junction City & Vietnam, his stories had me on the edge of my seat, 2 hours had passed before I knew it. I'd definitely do it again and it was an honor! Note*** When he had returned from Vietnam he made his jump school graduation wings into a ring that is today his wedding ring! This all went down in the Heroes Hall over coffee. Need I say more ... They even gave me a nickname- NEWB 💥 #military #veteran
