After graduating from the University of Melbourne, I used my biomedical science training to prepare thousands of students for the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, and OAT, both in a traditional classroom setting and, more often, in an Adobe-based digital learning environment (Live OnLine, or "LOL" (no, really)).

My role requires teaching everything from reading comprehension to physics, essay writing to statistics, philosophy to biochemistry, and "how to rotate objects in your head, for future dentists". All Kaplan teachers have scored at or above the 90th percentile on each section of every test that we teach.

We work remotely and, frequently, synchronously: teams of 2-5 teach and provide live and email assistance to classes of between 20 and 200 students.

I have also presented and assisted at Kaplan sales events, providing students with an authority resource to answer their questions and guide them to the right test prep option for them.

My band, "Ought," released our first record in April 2014 on Montreal's Constellation Records. 

Following unexpected critical success we made two more records - one more on Constellation and one on Merge Records - and played almost 400 shows over four years in the US and Europe, including performances at Primavera Sound, Pitchfork Festival (Chicago and Paris), and Roskilde.

I also co-ran a small record label, Misery Loves Company, which recorded and released limited-run cassettes by local underground musicians and similarly-minded weirdos.

Being authentic in everything you do. 

Look, I’ve tried everything: 

- Trying to copy & paste viral formats 
- Running automations for comments 
- Posting every day, even multiple times 
- Trying every “algorithm hack” out there 

Yet none of this worked as well as I would’ve liked to. 

And it certainly isn’t a good foundation for a business. 

Instead, good foundations are: 

1. Sharing actionable advice & real case studies. 
2. Writing how you actually speak. 
3. Building genuine relationships with your ICP. 
4. Helping people out before ever selling + never hard selling.

10K followers. Decent engagement. Next to zero leads in 3 months.

I asked who his clients are. "CMOs at SaaS companies"

How many CMOs do you think care about your agency processes?

…

Yeah - your CMO doesn't care about your Monday setup, they care about their pipeline being dead

Write about THAT

But no, everyone keeps writing these agency circle jerk posts because they get likes from other agencies who will never pay you a $

I watched 3 different agency owners bomb their discovery calls last week.

All trying to sell to me. 

And they were all doing the EXACT same thing wrong.

Agency owner gets on the call, pulls up their Notion template, and starts their interrogation:

"So... what's your budget?" types furiously

"And... your timeline?" more typing

"Have you... worked with agencies before?" typing intensifies

Meanwhile the prospect is thinking (in this case me): 

"Does this person even give a shit about my business?"

Listen.

The best therapist you ever had? They barely spoke.

But when they did, you KNEW they'd been processing everything. 

That's what closes deals.

Here's what I would do instead:

→ Match their vibe

They talk about bid adjustments? Cool, let's nerd out on bid adjustments.

They talk about hiring problems? We're staying there.

Don't be that guy explaining Facebook pixel setup to a CEO who just wants to stop bleeding cash.

Like, I just told you the building is on fire and you're asking about the doorbell.

→ Give them something valuable NOW

Not "in 6 weeks when my team does an audit."

→ Shut up and let the silence happen

They'll say something. Then pause.

DO. NOT. SPEAK.

They'll fill that silence with the real problem. 

The one they didn't even know they had.

That's where the money is.

Be brave enough to have a genuine conversation. 

Oh, and please stop sharing your screen to show me your "proven process" deck.

Nobody - and I mean NOBODY - gives a damn about your "team of results-hungry media buyers trained in the dark arts of performance marketing."

They care about whether you understand THEIR problem.

Listen like their business depends on it.

Because it does.

P.S. - "Do you have any questions?" is the worst close ever. Too easy to say no. 

Try "What questions do you have?" Small change. Big difference. The silence after is where deal might get made.

Most LinkedIn ‘experts’ don’t use their own advice. 

DON’T do the same if you want results. 

Look, I’ve been in the LinkedIn game for years now. 

And honestly, 9 out of 10 tips here are trash. 

Not because the people sharing them are bad… 

But because of the ‘post daily no matter what’ mindset. 

This will take you nowhere. 

If you do want results, simply: 

1. Post actionable stuff people can implement 
2. Share results with the strategy that got you there 
3. Focus on your ideal client, not everyone on LinkedIn 
4. Give out resources people can apply immediately 
5. Tell real stories and lessons you got from them 

It’s pretty simple. 

If you run a business, you already have more than enough content ideas from your own experience. 

And reusing old, high-performing posts is totally fine. 

Keep it real and keep it useful. 

That’s the key for LinkedIn.

I've sent out 1000's of different DMs on LinkedIn. 

Every booked call came from ONE thing. 

That one thing was letting the conversation naturally lead to a call. 

Not by me pushing it. 

Look, most people: 

→ Use (bad) automation tools 
→ Try the new hottest DM scripts 
→ Copy & paste templates from elsewhere 

But… does this sound like a genuine human-to-human interaction? 

No. 

And selling only works when it is. 

Here’s how you should do it instead: 

1. Start with something that shows you actually know them. 
2. Always add value and ask actually thoughtful questions. 
3. Offer a call only if it naturally fits the flow of the conversation. 

Don’t even think of this as a strategy. 

Start thinking of it as a mindset. 

A mindset of putting people first, not your pitch. 

And only sending out your calendar when it fits the conversation flow. 

This method + good offer = 15+ extra calls/mo. 

DMs are really not rocket science.

Your ideal clients scroll past you every single day. 

Not because they don't need help. 

But because you're making it too hard for them to reach out. 

They shouldn't have to: 

→ “Go through a funnel” 
→ Jump through qualification hoops 
→ Have to try to understand your messaging 
→ Figure out which of your 5 offers is relevant 
→ Chase you down just to get a simple next step 

Why would they? 

All that friction just widens the gap from finding you to buying from you. 

Which is not what you should strive for. 

Instead, buying from you should be easy. 

And often, the clients who've paid me $50k+ reached out first. 

All because I made it dead simple: 

1. Clear, specific content about their exact problem 
2. One-click calendar link in my profile bio 
3. Short, friendly DMs without a crazy master strategy behind 
4. Zero-pressure conversations + being easy to talk to 

The easier you make it, the more they'll reach out. 

Pretty obvious, right? 

Yet it’s the exact reason my calendar stays full without me chasing anyone. 

Same story with every client as well. 

Simple always wins.

Your last post could’ve closed a $5K/mo deal… 

But the hook flopped. 

How ridiculous is that? 

And yet, this happens on LinkedIn every single day. 

It’s because most people don’t realize a hook needs to spark emotions. 

And in specific, the hooks should trigger one of these emotions: 

1. Doubt 
2. FOMO 
3. Curiosity 
4. Surprise 
5. Urgency 
6. Relatability 
7. Ambition 
8. Conflict 

Just imagine seeing a post thinking, ‘How is this even possible?’ 

It grabs you instantly. 

And there’s no logical reason not to click on it. 

On top of sparking emotions, you want your hooks to: 

→ Be short and punchy. 
→ Make it specific (not talk to everyone) 
→ Use numbers and specifics to make it concrete. 

If your hooks aren’t clickable, your posts won’t be either. 

It’s that simple.
