After graduating from the University of Melbourne, I used my biomedical science training to prepare thousands of students for the MCAT, PCAT, DAT, and OAT, both in a traditional classroom setting and, more often, in an Adobe-based digital learning environment (Live OnLine, or "LOL" (no, really)).

My role requires teaching everything from reading comprehension to physics, essay writing to statistics, philosophy to biochemistry, and "how to rotate objects in your head, for future dentists". All Kaplan teachers have scored at or above the 90th percentile on each section of every test that we teach.

We work remotely and, frequently, synchronously: teams of 2-5 teach and provide live and email assistance to classes of between 20 and 200 students.

I have also presented and assisted at Kaplan sales events, providing students with an authority resource to answer their questions and guide them to the right test prep option for them.

That's where I think we’re at with AI right now.
​
For context - 
​
Everyone in LA was buzzing during the OG Uber days. 
​
"Why would I even own a car?"
​
Then…

The VC subsidies ran out.

Now that same ride costs $70.

Companies are burning billions so you'll use their tools for free or nearly free. They want you dependent on them before the real costs hit.

At 14, I was a classically trained violinist (ranked top 70 in the country).

And the way I got there was through pure degradation.
​
- 4+ hours of practice. 
- Every single day. 
- Rest = soft
​
That's the culture of classical music. 
​
You learn that suffering equals progress. That if it doesn't hurt, you're not working hard enough.
​
So when I started my agency, I brought that same mentality with me…

Because what nobody tells you about the grinder mentality, is that it works until your body says no.

I've watched 100s of agencies fail in front of my eyes over the last 36 months. Some had 50K followers and couldn't book a single qualified call.

Why does this happen?
​
Because dopamine addiction makes you optimize for the wrong outcomes entirely.

It's a mental spiral.
​
1. You post content that gets 100s of likes (instead of content that attracts your ideal clients)
2. You become psychologically attached to numbers on a screen that have zero correlation with your bank account.
3. Your brain starts CRAVING the notification hits.

And so on and so forth.

It's a loop that only gets snapped when you go look at your Stripe account.

The solution isn't to stop posting.
​
It's actually quite weird...
​
But I've recommended it to over 500+ agency owners and it WORKS.

Install a feed blocker.
​
Sounds extreme. But I'm telling you, when you can't see the like counts, it becomes easy to start optimizing for what actually matters.
​
Now, it's quite literally the first thing we do in my program.
​
Because you can have ALL the fancy lead hook tactics and content optimizations you want...
​
But you can't build a real B2B business on LinkedIn when you're addicted to fake validation.
​
Leads > Likes.
​
No way around it.

I used to sleep on couches, survive off gas station hot-dogs, and make $400/mo.

It's how I learned to close deals for my $3,000,000 agency.

For some context -

At the time, I was touring the world with my band.
​
And though I didn't get much $ out of the experience....

I DID hard-code some foundational sales training that 99% of people never get.

Here are 3 things being a musician taught me about sales as an agency owner:

(1) Attention
​
Every night on stage, you have 30 seconds to capture a room full of strangers.
​
That's IT.
​
It's just you, your voice, and the ability to make people feel something.
​
And come to find out, that translates beautifully to sales calls.
​
Instead of just 'pitching services', ​ I learned:
​
- How to read the room.
- How to listen for what they're not saying.
- How to actually find the emotional core of their problem.
​

​
(2) Vulnerability.
​
In music, authenticity is often your only chance of survival.
​
If you're fake on stage, everyone knows immediately.
​
The audience can smell bullshit from across the room.
​
Same thing happens on sales calls.
​
Prospects can tell INSTANTLY when you're reading from a script versus when you actually understand their business.
​
You simply can't be afraid to admit what you don't know.
​

(3) Creative industries teach you to handle rejection differently.
​
As a musician, 99% of venues say no. 99% of labels pass. 99% of radio stations won't play your song.
​
You learn (quickly... like day 1) that rejection is NEVER personal.
​
It's all just data.
​
So when I started doing ​ outreach, I wasn't afraid of getting ignored or getting crushed by "not interested" responses.
​
I'd already been rejected by thousands of people who mattered way more to me than some random CMO.

(4) The best salespeople are storytellers.
​
Every song is a three-minute story with a beginning, middle, and end.
​
You learn structure, pacing, when to build tension / when to release it, etc.
​
That's exactly what a sales conversation is.

It's 100% about taking someone on an emotional journey from where they are to where they want to be.
