I visualize the ideal outcome for the role. What specific achievements should this person accomplish? Understanding the end goal helps shape the entire hiring process.

In interviews, I dive deep. Specific, thoughtful questions reveal more than just surface-level details. They show how candidates think, solve problems, and fit within our culture.

3. Intuition and Data:

Went from tech, to construction, to healthcare, to media, and then to finance. Here's what I've learned: you can do a lot in life. So, when your grandkids visit. They'll be happy to hear your stories.

I've worked in 10 industries in 16 years.

- In tech, I learned how one small idea can turn into something huge that changes the world. In healthcare, I saw how important it is to care for others. I also saw how strong people can be during tough times.

- Media was all about the power of stories. The stories we tell can shape what people think and dream about. And in finance, I got to understand how money makes the world go round, how it goes up and down and affects everything.

Why stick to one thing when there's a whole world of stuff to try? Every job taught me something new, gave me stories to tell, and showed me a bit more about how the world works.

So here's my advice: go out there and try different things. Don't be scared of the new or the unknown. Jump in! The skills you pick up, the people you meet, and all the ups and downs make your life richer and way more interesting.

Finance should be a school subject for at least a year.
AER. APR. Interest rates. Mortgage rates. How to build good credit scores. People have no idea about any of that.

But they're super important for handling money smartly.

Imagine if you knew all about money before you even finished school. You'd be able to make better choices.

As the CFO of a VC-backed startup, I thought I had it all figured out. Until one decision cost us millions. Here's the biggest mistake I made in 16 years (and how you can avoid it):

The pressure is immense and the expectations sky-high.

Extra confident, too confident.

The first thing I did was to cut our marketing costs. On paper, the numbers looked appealing. Our profit margins started to rise. I was ready to present these results, proud of the impact we'd made.

This experience reshaped my approach. I began to see the big picture. I saw that each budget item could affect our growth. I learned that sometimes spending in the right areas is an investment. It's an investment in your company's future. It's not a drain on its resources.

Now, I'm sharing this story not to keep kicking myself for that mistake, but to help others learn from it. Failure is not the opposite of success; it's a step towards it.

By the time I sit down to work, my environment is primed for focus.

It's not about how long you work but how effectively you use your time.

That's why clear communication and set goals are important. They help us understand our jobs and keep us focused, reducing the need for constant meetings. We have regular communication schedules to keep everyone informed and aligned. This way, we avoid too many meetings.

You buy shares that represent ownership in a public company. As the company grows, profits increase. The stock price tends to rise. This lets you sell later at a higher price. But stocks also come with more volatility and risk of losses if the company struggles.

2) Bonds

These are loans you make to companies or governments. They pay you fixed interest over time. You get your principal back at the bond's maturity. Bonds are generally lower risk than stocks but have lower return potential too.

3) Mutual Funds

Mutual funds are not individual stocks or bonds. They let you pool money and get a bundle of investments managed by pros. This offers instant diversification across many holdings. But, it comes with fees that can cut returns.

4) Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

Similar to mutual funds in providing a basket of investments, but ETFs track an index like the S&P 500. They have lower fees since they don't need active management. ETFs trade like stocks throughout the day.

5) Real Estate

This could be physical property like a rental home generating income. Or investment vehicles, like REITs, trade like stocks. They own commercial real estate assets. Real estate often hedges against inflation. But, it has more headaches, like maintenance costs.

The best strategy is usually a mix of these types of investment. It should be based on your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

For example:

→ Short-term (0-3 years): Keep money fairly liquid. Put it in cash, money markets, CDs, or short-term bond funds.
→ Medium-term (3-10 years). You should have a balance of stocks and bonds. You can get this balance through mutual funds or ETFs.
→ Long-Term (10+ years): Mostly stocks and real estate to maximize growth

Understanding each investment lets you tailor your portfolio to your situation. Don't overcomplicate it. The basics still apply, no matter what vehicles you use.

Renting is different from buying. Same with apartment vs. house and city vs. suburbs. Your housing is most people's biggest cost. Getting a fancier place in a trendier area can easily cost £500-£1,000 more per month. That's £6,000 to £12,000 per year you can't invest!

2. Transportation

Financing a new luxury car every few years with a £500-£800 monthly payment is like lighting cash on fire. Not to mention insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs. Buying used and keeping vehicles longer puts thousands back in your pocket annually.

It's easy to spend £25-£50 per meal going out 2-3 times per week with friends. Say you spend a conservative £300 monthly on restaurants and £200 on groceries. That's £6,000 per year that could be invested! Cooking at home saves a bundle.

4. Vices

A £5 latte every weekday adds up to over £1,200 annually. A nightly £8 beer or glass of wine is another £3,000. 

And a £10 pack-a-day smoking habit burns over £3,600 per year! Cutting these completely changes your savings game.

5. Non-Essential Subscriptions

£10 here for Netflix, £25 there for the gym, £7 for Spotify. These recurring charges silently suck cash. They can total over £100 per month. And, you don't even think about them. An annual £1,200 you could invest instead!

It's easy to downplay these costs in the moment. A latte here, an Uber there - no biggie, right? But spending a few pounds carelessly each day robs you. 

It robs you of tens of thousands of potential long-term wealth. The money misses out on years of compound growth.

What are some tips for saving money on housing?

Fintech wasn't hot in 2015. But they still built a $33B business by 2024.
Revolut's story is simply incredible.

In 2015, Nikolay Storonsky and Vlad Yatsenko launched a fintech app. It allowed free currency exchange and fee-free spending abroad.

It was a simple idea. But, it resonated with millennials. They were tired of being nicked by traditional banks.

Just 9 years later, Revolut is now valued at $33 billion. It reached this value by raising $800 million in a Series E funding round.

For context, that's more than the market caps of:

- Credit Suisse ($17B)
- Deutsche Bank ($32.3B)

So how did Revolut grow from a simple app to one of the world's most valuable fintechs in less than a decade?

It started with a laser focus on growth, not profit.

Most banks cut costs and raised fees. But, Revolut did the opposite. They offered free premium features to attract new users quickly.

This led to rapid growth. Revolut got over 25 million customers in 35 countries by 2022.

But Revolut's real secret sauce was an intense focus on product innovation.
They constantly added new features. The course covered budgeting tools, cryptocurrency trading, and stock trading. It also included insurance and exclusive airport lounge access.

This created a "super app." It could handle all parts of personal finance from one platform.

It let Revolut rise above being just another banking app. It embedded itself into every part of users' financial lives.

Revolut Milestones:

2015: Founded in the UK
2017: Hit 1M users, launched in Europe
2019: Became a bank with European license
2020: Launched US operations
2021: Hit 16M customers globally
2022: Valued at $33B after $800M raise

Of course, this growth-at-all-costs approach wasn't cheap.
Revolut has raised over $1.7 billion in venture capital. It will use the money to expand into new markets and verticals.

They've reportedly burned through $1 billion in cash. This happened over the past 3 years alone. This was due to high customer acquisition costs.

But it has over $2 billion in annual revenue for 2023. So, Revolut's sky-high value doesn't seem so crazy. Digital finance is disrupting old banking.

Storonsky hinted at taking Revolut public soon at a $50B+ valuation.

If they can keep their momentum, we may be seeing the birth of the first true global bank. Two founders who wanted to make money exchanges a bit easier built it.
