Life knocks you down.
That part's easy.

Getting back up, that’s the work.

Three years ago, I missed my biggest goal.

Months of effort.
Late nights.
All in.

Still missed.

I sat in my car, hands on the wheel, thinking,
“Was all that for nothing?”

It wasn’t.
It was the start of learning.

Failure didn’t finish me.
It taught me.

1. Rejection teaches
A “no” just means not yet.

2. Failure points.
It shows you what to fix.

3. Changing course isn’t weak.
It’s how you find what works.

4. The door that closes
is the one that pushes you toward the right one.

Your pace isn’t mine.
Your route isn’t mine.
When you look sideways, you slow down.

Forget big overhauls.
Do small things right.

Send one honest message.
Make one better call.
Try again tomorrow.

Everything that goes wrong tells you something.

A missed sale shows what didn’t land.
A bad launch shows what didn’t fit.
A lost client shows where you stopped listening.

Setbacks aren’t proof you can’t.
They’re proof you’re trying.

The work that got you here won’t get you there.
The people who started with you might not stay.
That’s part of it.

Growth sits in the spot you don’t want to look at.

There’s an underrated quality that changes the way people experience leadership.

👉 Humility

Not the kind that shrinks.
Not the kind that stays quiet.

The kind that steadies a room.

You see it when a leader doesn’t rush to prove they’re right.
When they pause long enough to listen.
When they admit, “I might be missing something.”

That moment does more than build trust.
It lowers defenses.
It creates space for better thinking.
It lets others bring their best forward.

Humility doesn’t weaken authority.
It strengthens it.

Because teams don’t follow perfection.
They follow leaders who are grounded enough to learn in real time.

I’ve watched confident leaders lose people by needing to be right.
And I’ve watched humble leaders earn commitment by staying curious.

The difference isn’t intelligence.
It’s self-awareness.

In practice, humility looks like this:
• Asking before asserting
• Listening without preparing a rebuttal
• Taking responsibility without self-flagellation
• Letting the work be bigger than your ego

In fast-moving, high-pressure environments, humility becomes a performance skill.

It keeps decisions clean.
It keeps relationships intact.
It keeps learning alive.

The leaders who last aren’t the loudest.
They’re the ones who know when to step back so the truth can step forward.

For a long time, the story in my head sounded responsible.

“You need to be more ready.”
“You need more proof.”
“You need to wait until everything is clear.”

It sounded wise.

But it was fear…
just wearing a professional voice.

The brain is interesting like that.

It doesn’t question the story you repeat.
It rehearses it.

Repeat something long enough,
and it becomes the lens you see yourself through.

“I’m not ready yet.”
“I’m not good enough yet.”
“I’ll try when I feel more confident.”

Years can pass inside those sentences.

What changed my life wasn’t a breakthrough.

It was catching the story.

And rewriting it.

Not perfectly.
Not all at once.

Just replacing:
“I’m not ready.”

with
“I’ll figure it out.”
 or maybe, “I’ll learn what I need to get where I’m meant to be.”
 even, “I’ll grow into it.”
 or perhaps, “I’ll start before I feel ready.”

Your brain will believe the story you repeat.

So be careful what you rehearse.

Because the voice you listen to the most
is the one that quietly becomes your future.

The most expensive misdiagnosis in organizational change?

Calling it “resistance.”

Someone skips the new system.
Goes back to the spreadsheet.
Finds a workaround.

We say they’re resisting.

Behavioral science says something else.

They made a rational decision.

Under real conditions:
pressure, competing priorities, and ambiguity.
The new process was harder than the old one.

The shortcut won.

Not because they didn’t understand.
Because it made more sense, it felt safer. 

And if the new system adds friction in an already strained environment, 
the old habit will always win.

The moment you label it resistance, you prescribe the wrong fix.

More training.
More communication.
More of what already didn’t work.

The real question isn’t:
“Why won’t they comply?”

It’s:
“Why isn’t the new behavior sticking?”

I came across this image while scrolling the other day.

At first glance, it’s inspiring.

A messy middle…
then an arrow shooting upward into the future.

The message seems obvious:
You survived the chaos and eventually things take off.

But the longer I looked at it, the more I wondered…
What if that’s not always what happens?

How many times have we felt that surge of motivation,
that 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 was the moment everything would turn?

The courageous pivot.
The 'one in a million' idea.
The life-changing opportunity.
The project that will change our career path.

We felt energized.
Certain even.

And then…it flopped.

Not quietly either.

The kind of flop that makes you question your judgment.
Your timing.
Your confidence.

But maybe the image is still right.
Just not in the way we think.

Because that messy knot in the middle isn’t just a representation of long-lived struggle and uncertainty.

It’s experimentation.
Misreads.
False starts.

Moments when we thought we were launching forward…

But they were actually still learning how to steer.
Lots and lots of learning (especially about ourselves)

Progress rarely feels like progress while you’re inside it.

Sometimes what looks like a setback.
It's just the part of the story where your understanding catches up with your ambition.

The arrow at the end isn’t guaranteed.

But the mess in the middle?
That part is almost universal.

So if you're in the scribble right now,
don't rush to judge the outcome.

You might still be inside the part of the story that makes the ending possible.
