This is my first foray into the world of video games, and consumer software, but I'm surrounded by an incredible, experienced founding team that I'm honored to work alongside. Our first title, The Snackbar At the End of the World, should be announced in 2024, likely releasing in 2026. Stay tuned for more :-)

After promoting COO, Sarah Bird, to the CEO role, I served as an individual contributor at Moz focused on marketing & product, both internally at the company and externally to our customers and community.

I started SEOmoz as a blog that turned into a consulting company, then a software business. In 2007, I raised funding and formally became CEO, holding that position until 2014, when I stepped down and promoted my COO to the role. I remained at the business as an individual contributor until Feb. 2018. I remain the chair of Moz's board of directors, a large shareholder, and supporter of the company.

Dharmesh Shah and I co-founded Inbound.org in 2011 as a place for marketers to share their knowledge, discussions, and content of value. I sold my share to Hubspot (for no profit) in 2014, but continue to help the site and the community as an informal contributor.

In 2018, I started SparkToro, software that makes audience research accessible to everyone. I'm also cofounder of indie game maker, Snackbar Studio, author of Lost and Founder: (2018), prev founded & led Moz (2001-17) and am a frequent keynote speaker on marketing and entrepreneurship. But, I'm probably best known as the amateur chef husband of renowned author, Geraldine DeRuiter.

"How big is ChatGPT's market share of search?"

This is a *very* complex question to answer. But, if you're willing to handle some messy data processes, this is the closest I'm able to get to something reasonable.

Visit data comparisons come from SimilarWeb. The number of "searches" (or prompts, in the case of LLMs) comes from Datos. And this only includes mobile and web browser traffic, not in-app activity, which could overcount LLMs (since they are more likely than social or search platforms to have mobile app activity). It also doesn't count API calls to any of these services. And it treats every prompt in an LLM as a "search" (which, we know from experience, is wrong).

Like I said, messy, but the closest thing we've got right now to a cross-platform comparison that's very generous to the LLMs' share.

My spicy take for the day came when I Googled "The problem with content marketing is..."

I disagree with all of the results.
It's not creation.
It's not quantity.
It's not even quality.

It's obsession with a channel that's overrepresented, but is far too competitive and, too often, underdelivers. 👇👇👇

It's conference season and I've been heavily on the road, so I've had the chance to talk with a lot of marketers the last few weeks. This post is the thing that bugs me the most.

Sometimes, I make something I think is valuable and it goes nowhere.  Falls flat. Reaches no one (or the wrong audience). But, last week, I published something that wasn't quite relevant to the people in my existing audience (on our blog, my social channels, etc.) and then... found that audience, reached out to *THEIR* sources of influence, and had a smash hit.

I *think* we have a product that's the best thing in the market for this particular content marketing use-case, but am achingly nervous about talking about it more. Please, someone, remind me that it's OK to talk about things you're proud of, even if they're part of your own company. 🙈😰
