For the first time in 9 YEARS, Google announced how many searches they receive. Why would they do that after being so secretive for so long? I think they're frustrated by so much media jumping on the "ChatGPT has 3 billion prompts per month!" and felt the need to do some PR control. And, in a move of serendipity I can only ascribe to the data gods' beneficence, SparkToro put out some new research yesterday that almost perfectly aligns with Google's statements, which once again, suggests Datos, A Semrush Company's clickstream panel is top-frickin'-notch for this stuff 👇

NEW research: https://lnkd.in/gpyUbRHG If we include ChatGPT, what is Google's *REAL* market share of search? Not share of traffic. Google and AI tools can't be directly compared based on visits, page views, or even prompts vs. searches. That's because most of what people do with AI tools has no corollary in traditional search and doesn't compete with Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, et al. But, thanks to new numbers from Datos, A Semrush Company, some reveals by both OpenAI and Google, and previous work by Statcounter and Semrush, we finally have enough reliable data to build high quality market share of search comparisons for both.

If your analytics reporting includes branded search with "Google search traffic" you're doing it wrong. Why? Because it'll bias your execs to think they can/should invest more in search marketing rather than brand/social/content/other channels -- the ones that *ACTUALLY* drove the demand for those branded Google searches.
