I know it's "just a screen with a recruiter" and all but if you take the time to set up a meeting with me and I didn't just cold call you, please please try to get somewhere quiet so we can have a real convo. 

I am assessing whether or not you fit the criteria that the client has set AND if you should be one of up to 3ish people that I am going to submit to my client for that job.

If I cannot keep your focus on our call that is probably going to be under 15 minutes, I'm going to have concerns about sending you on a longer interview. 

Also, I personally could care less if you're in a hoody or whatever but it all comes into play when we're trying to put the person most likely to get hired in front of our clients(I do most of my screens on video).

I see all kinds of things wrong with hiring today on both sides of the equation. I feel as if I shouldn't have to tell someone not to show up to an interview in a t-shirt but if I don't say it, it will inevitably happen

(that no prep pre-interview guy probably thinks this is cheating)

And here's the thing. I'm going to get pushback on this post. I'm going to get "skills and attitude should matter more than what you wear'

And you're right, cool. But if EVERYONE has the same skillset and is just as qualified to do the job that they're being presented for and all have a great attitude and interview well enough to showcase all of that...

What is the differentiating factor that the hiring manager has to go on? Flip a coin? Job lottery? 

You have to want the job more than I want to place you. Every single time. If you don't I absolutely promise you someone else will get it. I can and will advocate for every one of my candidates and take them right to the finish line but YOU have to be the one to cross it.

In this market, it's the little things that are making a difference.

Please leave no doubt. Be undeniable in every aspect.

IF you are looking for a job, please make the FIRST thing in your headline the job you're looking for...

 If you want a job as a Passionate Servant Leader Mom to Fur-babies, keep that but in my opinion not many recruiters are looking for that.. 

Try "Full-Stack Developer | Passionate Servant Leader Mom to Fur-babies | Ex-TGIFridays" instead.

Remove hurdles from your job search and make it easier for people want to click. You're spending all this time posting, commenting, liking but as a tenured recruiter I know that I am 100% going to click on people's profile if the tagline clearly matches the title of the job I'm working in when I see them like a post of mine or if they pop up on someone else's post.  Make it make sense for recruiters to click through.

I rarely click on headlines that are funny or silly. I'm working on this platform. It might feel like "just social media" at times, which is cool, but it's also how us agency people conduct business 

😎 Got a job and not looking? Cool I obviously have a "different" headline
🎣 In sales and trying to use your headline for some kind of clickbait? Cool man you do you.

If I were looking for a job right now and trying to navigate the field of advice on linkedin I would do these 5 things...


1. Follow more people that are in a hiring seat than recruiters. It's lovely that linkedin has given so many of those badges out to recruiters, good for them. But the person that makes the final decision is not us. We get you in the door. The Director or the CTO or COO or President are the final boss. Read their posts and interact with them.

2. Rip apart the resume with the colors and picture and fancy font up. Back to basics. You can save the fancy long form to give to someone that can fully understand it when you're in later rounds. Recruiters are looking for experience match and skill match to set a screen. That's it. Make it so simple that they could draw lines from your skills to the minimums requirements they're paid to find people to fill. 

3. Unfollow all of the ghostwriters and content strategy people. Authenticity doesn't come from

If you're trying to hack the algorithm to get more visibility right now, stop. Work on your resume/linkedin, your interview skills and targeting companies to do some networking with. Going viral as a jobseeker doesn't do squat a large percentage of the time except draw in MLM scams and resume writers 

4. If you're tracking your applications out and it is not to gather the data to improve your process, please stop that too. And even for data to improve, I wouldn't be sharing that. Recruiters and HM's will LOOK for a reason you're being constantly rejected and it will be a self perpetuated and fulfilled trend.  

Is this fair? Probably not but at the end of the day ALL companies exist to stay in business. Basic psychology here is that if everyone else passed, I should too because even if I can't see the issue someone else did. 

5. this one is going to be a bit of a pride swallower but be nice to all recruiters, even if they suck. Some recruiters JUST shuffle resumes and toss the ones they think are best to the HM's. You need them to have no doubt you are the ONE they were looking for. Shitting on them publicly enrages the recruiter hive mind of linkedin and screws you out of a shot.

Bonus tip - You need to think of every way possible to remove all obstacles between you and the job you want. If the process sucks and the company isn't really it, drop out of the running. Stop wasting time and energy on things that aren't right just because you landed an interview finally. Put that effort into finding the next thing

I know it's rough out there. I own this company because I couldn't do that part of it anymore or work for people that didn't give a shit about candidates or clients, just the bottom line. Be intentional about the things you do and be kind and it will work out.

Listen, agency recruiters want to know your desired salary range because they have a range to work within. my questions are always "what are you targeting and what number will you accept" and here's why...

I am going to look at your background and skillset stacked against the other people that are in the mix. If I have people in that are better fits skillwise and culturally i am going to tell you if you're too high.

I know the tipping point from you getting what you're worth and at what point you'll be rejected before you get an interview, 

and most of the time I am going to tell you right then that I won't be submitting you for that job.

I don't say "let me run it by Jackie and see if she can squeeze some more out of the budget"

because I know how my clients will respond to that, and who else is interviewing and what they want. 

And to clarify something that agencies often say as a way to draw you in

Yes on a contingent model we do get paid more as your offer goes up but here's the thing...

If I submit everyone at the top of the range, I will lose that client. Top of the range means you hit 100% of every desired, required, wish list skill and culturally fit like a glove(no OJ)

I am a candidate advocate when i get someone in the mix for an interview. Before that point, I am protecting my client and doing what I'm paid to do, which is to find the best people that they can afford.

Recruiters, posting your ranges is going to save you time and make you more money, have better acceptance rates and ultimately just helps you to not look scummy. 

Is it Thursday already? Time really flies when you're getting amazing candidates lined up for your awesome clients...

Before you get to that final interview, I suggest you come up with the reason that you are the best choice for the job out the many very qualified people in the running. If you can't answer that, no one else will be able to either.

Recruiters it gets better. Jobseekers, it gets easier. I've seen more crazy stuff in the last 2 years than in my entire career of over a decade. 


I've been ghosted by clients 

I've had candidates get selected for 2nd rounds - offers and ghost

I've had a person sign an offer letter and  go back to counter right before her start at so high above the top of the range that we all thought she was joking(she read she should do it on linkedin)

I've sent about a bajillion emails, made a lot of phone calls and constantly exhaust my Inmails and connection requests.

And I'm probably doing the best job and most work I've ever done. We deliver fast and we have an amazing thing going. This is the most I've ever loved this job by a country mile. 

We're all competing on a global level and everything is adjusting. 

It will get better.

 Me - "OOOOHHH yea oh jeez I didn't realize it just happened(i did realize it), I was just saying 'hi'"

HM - "hi"

me - ...

me - "so how did she do?"

HM - "I'll call you later"

me -... fine

It's Monday and I woke up to the 6 year old screaming about no toilet paper. Then I cold plunged, read some Dostoevsky and ate celery straight out of the ground and solved childcare in the US... Welcome to the Thunderdome 

Not for nothing but if you have "fast paced environment" or anything like that in your job descriptions, maybe prioritize making your hiring process shorter than 2+months...
