This is the time for you to get your AI MBA. But not at a university... at a startup. Back in 2012, I was lost. Cubicle data entry job. Suit and tie every day. I was stuck and stagnating. A year later: โข I quit my job โข Moved to NYC โข Landed a job as an early-Uber The role accelerated my career by light years. Instead of going to business school, I got a startup MBA. I learned how to build a business by doing. My ๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐๐๐บ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ were my ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐. By actually putting AI to use to solve problems. Not at a university. But inside a startup. At a startup, they'll be hungry for you to: โข Test new tools โข Implement to solve problems โข Report on progress โข Teach others how to do the same That's the best way I have found to learn. Apply the learning to real situations to solve real problems. Now is the time to be using the tools. Now is the time to understand their applications. Now is the time to implement. You can do that inside your current company. OR, if you can't, it might be time to look elsewhere. Don't be left behind. Go get your AI startup MBA. ---- P.S. I spent yesterday working out of Lumen Industries aka Bell Works in New Jersey. Literally where they shoot the scenes for the show. It's an incredible space.
The day Uber made every employee a recruiter. And handed out $2M rewards. Going back through old journals, I found a relic. It explains why Uber was so successful at hiring. It's the morning of July 16, 2013. My third month at Uber. No matter where you're based, they flew you to SF for onboarding. We called it Uberversity. I recently found my old Uberversity notebook. I pulled open the tattered cover. There, I saw my first note From the first meeting On the first day It reads... Talk to anyone who worked at Uber in those days. They will say how incredibly talented the team was. This strategy was a major contributing factor. Referrals compound: smart people refer other smart people. It created urgency: Do it now, not "someday". 3๏ธโฃ It aligned incentives: The big reward turned everyone in the company into a recruiter. It set the tone: Everyone was accountable for talent. Steal this strategy. Turn recruiting into a ritual. Reward your team with significant incentives. Convert every employee into an evangelist recruiter. Uber turned recruiting into a culture. And it changed everything. I'm curious... Has your company tried something this bold? Drop your favorite recruiting tactic in the comments. โ Follow Kyle Thomas for more stories from early-Uber
How to get in touch with literally anyone. Even if youโre starting from zero. I listened to a podcast with Tim Ferriss' first employee. A few weeks later, we were chatting on Zoom. Want similar results? Use this 4-step Cold DM Framework: 1๏ธโฃ Do interesting things This may sound too abstract, but it's pretty simple. People who are interesting get attention. The more attention you get, the more credible you are. But this isn't mindless attention. Be thoughtful so you attract YOUR people. Follow their content Start on Twitter, LinkedIn, newsletters, podcasts. Wherever they post. Youโre studying their voice, interests, and priorities. This gives you context and conversation ammo. Engage authentically Comment 3x/week on their posts. โ Ask smart follow-up questions โ Add your perspective โ Reference their older ideas Donโt be a fan, be a peer. Want to stand out in your next interview? Stop worrying about being likeable. Be ๐๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐๐น instead. An Early member was prepping for an interview. โIโve been casually lookingโฆโ That sentence is killing your job search. And your momentum. And your career clarity. See if this sounds familiar๐ "I was ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ดโฆ but never had any interviews." "Iโve been ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด for a year." "I started ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด in Octoberโฆ but didnโt find anything." "Iโve been ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด and kind of just tossing my resume out and seeing what happens." Those quotes are pulled directly from conversations I've had with job seekers recently. Let me be direct: โCasually lookingโ is a career stall tactic. Hereโs what it actually does: 1๏ธโฃ It wastes your time. The job search is a momentum game. Inconsistent effort = inconsistent results. You canโt build muscle memory with one rep a month. 2๏ธโฃ It wastes othersโ time. Recruiters can tell. Hiring managers can sense hesitation. And it signals youโre not truly ready to commit. It leads to stagnation. Casual searchers skip the deep work: What do I really want next? Why? What will I not settle for? What happens without those answers? Youโll land in the same role with a new logo. Slightly more money. Slightly better title. But a year laterโฆ still unfulfilled. It builds bad habits. When you're half-in you don't go all out. You're less likely to prepare thoroughly. You're less likely to go above and beyond. You're more likely to cut corners. Over time, you engrain bad job search habits. 5๏ธโฃ It delays important decisions. โBrowsingโ feels safe. But it postpones the uncomfortable truth: ๐ Your current role may no longer fit. Your story might need a reset. Your goals have likely evolved. It's a sign you need to go deeper. To figure out why you're browsing. And what you really want. โ If youโre in, be all in. Get clarity. Build momentum. Take it seriously. Or wait until youโre truly ready to move. Your future self will thank you. ๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐: Should everyone always be โcasually lookingโ? โณ "Best to always know what's out there." Or do you think it's a waste of time? โณ "Being half-in means you're wasting your time."
Pausing your job search every time you get an interview? Thatโs how momentum dies. And how people end up back at square one. I spoke with a startup job seeker yesterday. She said... โI was interviewing for 3 roles. One paused hiring. One chose someone else. And now Iโm justโฆ stuck.โ Sheโs not alone. This happens ALL THE TIME. โ People prep for interviews (awesome!) But they pause everything else (networking, outreach, sourcing roles) So if those roles fizzle out... They're left with nothing. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Want to stand out AND stay in motion? Build a system that works even while you're interviewing. Batch your warm networking Pick 1 day/week to build a list of 50-100 warm contacts. Now you've front-loaded the hard work. Spend 30 min to 1 hr/day sending high-volume, high-quality messages with ease. Batch your role discovery Create a running list of companies and roles. For each one identify the relevant people to contact. To speed outreach up even further, write down: โข Why you're interested โข What value you offer โข What experience might resonate โข What you hope to learn 3๏ธโฃ Use a text expander Stop typing the same thing 100+ times. That's a lot of manual work. Make this faster by saving templates in a tool. I like aText, but TextExpander works as well. Save job board searches Set up alerts or save filtered links. Add them to your calendar as recurring events. No more forgetting to check or starting from scratch each week. Time-block your system You've done the heavy lifting. Now, just stick to the plan: โข 30-60 min/day โ warm outreach โข 1-2 hrs/day โ cold outreach Interviews are part of the process. A part you should spend a lot of time on. But they're not the whole thing. Build a system you can maintain. And donโt stop moving. It's not the fastest man/woman who wins the race. It's he/she who slows down the least. Repost to help people you know keep momentum โ Follow Kyle Thomas for more
She took a step back from work for 2 years. 2.4 months later, she's at a top Series A startup. This is the story of a recent Early member's success. She had been a PM at Meta. I turned 37 on Saturday. Here's 37 tips I wish I knew earlier in my career: 1. You'll never feel "ready". 2. Donโt say should. There is no should. 3. Nothing is as good or as bad as you think. 4. Become a curator of all things high quality. 5. Luck is preparedness meeting opportunity. 6. Own and lead your 1:1's with your manager. 7. Be the squeaky wheel. Don't suffer in silence. 8. Pay it forward to the people two steps behind. 9. Understand expectations before taking action. 10. A certificate can't trump real-world experience. 11. The news is a net negative on your well-being. 12. Don't assume everyone knows what you know. 13. Follow your gut. Even if it challenges the norm. 14. Be conscious of your information consumption. 15. Having a lot of money will not cure your anxiety. 16. When you have product market fit... you'll know. 17. Tell people how much you appreciate their work. 18. Remember to take lots of pictures of the journey. 19. Going after a role purely for the title is a mistake. 20. Compete on generosity in every area of your life. 21. Never assume you know more than anyone else. 22. Who you know and who knows you opens doors. 23. Seek to be so valuable that you're indispensable. 24. Proximity is power. Get close to high performers. 25. Keep a running log of your successes and impact. 26. Tough times with great people forge strong bonds. 27. Take care of your body. It's the only one you have. 28. Your story has value to those behind you. Share it. 29. Seek to be in rooms where you're not the smartest. 30. Learn to tell stories with data. Every role needs this. 31. Progress over perfection. Consistency beats speed. 32. Communication is an underutilized way to stand out. 33. Do everything to increase your surface area for luck. 34. Become a student of the game. Whatever the game. 35. Only 1% of job applications come from referrals But they're 37x more likely to land you a job. If you're spending all of your time applying... It's time to rethink your strategy. Ashby released some hiring data last week. The report analyzed: โข Over 38M applications โข Across 93k jobs โข From Jan '21 to Dec '24 Here's what they found: 93.8% of all applications came from inbound. (Inbound = online applications) Only 1% of all applications came from referrals. Referrals (1% of applications) and internal candidates (.05% of applications) consistently outperform others in interview and offer rates. If you're spending hours on job boards but not tapping into your network... You're missing your biggest unfair advantage. Only reaching out when a role is open. After I was laid off from Uber, most of my networking calls were catching up with people I liked working with. Not just asking them if they could refer me to an open role. These calls are most effective if you know what you're looking for. Referral rates have been decreasing over time. Referrals made up 2% of total applications in Q1 '21. In Q1 '24 they dropped to 1% of total applications. This could be due to multiple factors: The flood of online applications and steady state referrals would decrease the overall % of referrals. Possible referrers are getting overwhelmed by all the people on the market reaching out for a referral. Founders have been giving away less equity, so it's possible that referral rewards have been dished out less generously, thereby decreasing the incentive to refer. Even though they're harder to come by, referrals give you the highest likelihood of landing the role as someone not inside the company. 500 Cold Applications = 1 Offer (0.2% A2O rate) Use a mixture, but focus your time on where you'll see the highest probability of an interview and offer. For you, that likely means: โข Networking to drive referrals โข Getting your resume in front of agencies
