Another year around the ☀️ sun. I won’t give 

you 48 lessons learned, I’ll give you three:


1) happiness is ✌️ things: first, it’s a choice.. second, it’s what you choose to focus on.

2) we’ll all suffer one of two pains - pain of discipline, or pain of regret. Choice is yours.

3) life is best (most fulfilling) when spent around people who want and look forward to spending time around you.

And because I don’t like rules (apparently including mine here 😄 of only three lessons)..

here’s a bonus 4th..

4) be good to yourself, and others.. let 💩 go.. we’re all doing the best we can.

48 years later, and I still don’t have it all figured out 🤷‍♂️

enough figured out though to know what matters.

Three things I didn’t want to do this week but 

did them anyways and why.. 


1) prospecting 

lots of leads, deals, and opportunities I’m currently working on.

In the past, I’d halt my prospecting because I was busy (today), losing sight of tomorrow.

1,3,5 million in pipeline and I’m still prospecting.

Without > Always Be Prospecting 

there can be no

Always Be Closing (sorry Glengarry Glen Ross)

2) gym workout (Wednesday)

My future brother-in-law came to town Wedneday.. these 🍺 were flowing 

made getting up Thursday morning at 4:30AM for a workout a little tougher

it’s a slippery slope when you start justifying reasons for not doing what you’ve committed to doing (been there, done that)

Not anymore - got up and went anyways 

3) tough conversation

Meg and I are getting married in 3 weeks and there’s financial logistics to address in the event one of us passes away 

👆not quite the conversation I want/prefer to be having 3 weeks out from getting married

but an important and necesssry chat for me/us to have and so we did 

versus putting it off (which we both would have preferred)

I didn’t feel great 😕 in the moment doing any of these, but you know what..

I feel incredibly great, relieved, fulfilled, and accomplished today having done them.

CTA - do the tough stuff you don’t want to do.. as my mentor would say to me,

“You don’t have to like it, you just have to do it. You can like it later.”

He was right.

80% of all the business I do comes from 

these two sources alone:

👉 referrals and live events 

• yes I cold call
• yes I email
• yes I set up sequences 
• yes I send LinkedIn messages 

👆 all touch points that keeps me actively showing up and prospecting.

Where I spend the most of my time however is fostering relationships with great people, great professionals, great partners..

who introduce me to people like Melissa Master-Holder (pictured with me below), Marie Potter, and Debbie Wong, ACC 

all wonderful L&D leaders I had the pleasure of meeting in person this week at the International Performance Management Institute (IPMI) event.

Realtionships > Referrals > IRL Conversations

👆this is my sequence of choice.

CTA - spend as much (if not more) time fostering relationships with partners as you do with prospecting..

not only is it more effective, it’s more fulfilling as well.

Three of the best days I’ve had in the past 10 

years happened in 2017 for this reason..


👉 no cell service

I was in Australia, on a catamaran, sailing ⛵️around Whitsunday, Australia.

With no cell service, all I could do was be present, take in the scenery, snorkel, swim, read, think, reflect, nap, and connect..

• with myself
• with my thoughts
• with nature
• with others that were with me

No social media, no texts, no work, no posting, no news..

zero distractions or noise from the outside world for three whole days.

A little weird (unfamiliar, uncomfortable) the first day..

complete peace, bliss, and mental ease 😌 the next two.

I think of those three days often.. and how wonderful and impactful they were for me.

It’s been 7 years.. thinking it may be time for another 3-day cell phone cleanse .. 🤔

that should be a thing (cell phone cleanse) if it isn’t already.

CTA - if you’ve never done a 24 hour cell phone cleanse (put it away, don’t touch or look at it for 24 hours) - try it..

may feel boring, strange, not natural at first.. but the sense of peace & mental ease you’ll gradually feel is awesome and worth the effort.

I find that more & more people are realizing 

the importance of doing meaningful work.


(Seems to be the topic of choose in most may calls lately)

Work people love, work they’re passionate about, that inspires and fulfills them.. 

• for more than just a salary
• for more than just the commissions 
• for more than just the benefits
• for more than just the perks 

I joined the Skye team and mission 69 days ago because it’s work that:

• matters to me
• speaks to me
• fulfills me
• inspires me
• makes me happy

If more often than not, you find yourself questioning the work you’re doing 

thinking to yourself, “this can’t be it, there’s gotta be more”..

good news.. 👉 there is.

It’s out there, look for it, find it.. there’s never a right time either.. the right time is when you decide it’s the right time.

Sure, money matters, putting food on the table matters, paying the bills matters..

so does happiness, fulfillment, and mental well-being.

As my mentor would say…

“If you’re not happy where you are, move.. you’re not a 🌳 tree.” 

CTA - If more often than not, you find yourself unhappy and unfulfilled with the work you’re doing..

make a move.. you’re not a tree, remember?

I was reminded recently by a former sales manager I met up with of this sentiment

he received about me from “people higher up” when we worked together.

Wasting time building partner relationships..

🤔🤔🤔

• Partnerships that have opened doors for me that no one else was able to open.

• Partnerships that have gotten me meetings with “non-responsive” senior leaders.

• Partnerships that have helped me fill rooms with people leaders for a baseball game or intimate leader dinner.

• Partnerships that have yielded me easily over a million dollars in closed revenue.

👆waste of time, huh? 🤦🏻‍♂️

To all the business partners I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and doing business with over the years..

When considering which is more important:

the journey or the destination.. It’s neither.


👉 it’s the company (people).. that’s most important.

It’s hard to enjoy (endure) the journey with the wrong people.

It’s hard to enjoy (appreciate) the destination with the wrong people.

It’s easy to enjoy (get through) almost anything with the right people.

Right as in, those who:

• support you
• encourage you
• inspire you
• motivation you
• respect you
• believe in you

👆and because of these..

they’re able to keep it real with you, challenge you, push you, hold you accountable, call you out if and when necessary.

this applies to friends
this applies to colleagues
this applies to managers
this applies to companies 

CTA - forget the bus 🚌 and where you’re headed.. take stock (first) of who’s around you, sitting near you, influencing you..

it’s the company, that matters most.
