Are You Developing Skills That Won't Be Automated?

(Years ago) I landed my first UX job after a 45 minute phone call with the manager at Microsoft. I told him stories about how I solved problems on the fly while managing a research project in Turkey. The story involved finding lunch for 150 Turkish and Syrian teenagers (research participants) in an hour after our caterer canceled. I made him laugh. An hour later I had the job. I defended my dissertation a week later, and a month later I moved from Arizona to Seattle. I had no tech experience (and didn’t know the tech lingo) but I learned quickly, and no one was the wiser. I’ve been a UX researcher ever since.

Five years later I know all the “tech words.” I have studied and employed advanced UX research methodologies. My research has resulted in many new insights  based on empathetic listening. I’ve problem solved with colleagues through impossible situations, usually involving people more often than technical challenges. Collaboration and common goals are at the heart of solving most problems.

If you are hiring I’d love to tell you stories about the problems I’ve solved, maybe make you laugh, in 45 minutes or less. I’m so ready to partner with a team and build something new, explore new questions, and solve more problems on the fly.

A note on AI techniques for EEG and Neuroscience.

Here are a few papers that I have found useful in understanding the concept of contrastive learning and how it can be applied to EEG data. 

Cui et al. (2023) is a great starting point for looking at how the concept of a self-supervised Foundation Model can be applied to EEG data.

Hyvarinen and Morioka (2016) and Hyvarinen et al. (2019) lay out a framework for applying contrastive learning to continuous time-series either with or without covariates. The papers read almost like statistics articles even though they're about deep learning. They served as a hook for me to get into the field of representation learning as a person with more of a background in Statistics and Dynamical Systems.

The other sources are examples of using contrastive learning to relate emotions or speech segments to EEG data. I used Shen et al. (2022) as inspiration for a decoder I worked on with people in the uCat community including Igor Dedkov.

Neuro-GPT: Developing A Foundation Model for EEG

A designer asked me how to solve a conflict with their developer.

Designer: "Your code is the problem! My vision is ideal!”

Developer: "Your design makes no sense! It's not feasible!"

After 14 years, here's what I've learned about the designer vs. developer tug-of-war.

The old way:

- Designer creates a mockup in a vacuum
- Developer critiques design without context
- Both sides dig their heels in
- Progress halts, pain ensues

The new way:

- Sit down together from the start
- Identify technical constraints upfront
- Align the "why" behind the design
- Discuss feasibility of the "how"
- Iterate together in real-time

Great products aren't built in silos. 

Designers need developers to bring their vision to life. And developers need designers to make their code usable and delightful.

You're on the same team with the same goal. Act like it.

How to prevent these conflicts:

1. Embrace constraints. They breed creativity.
2. Communicate the "why" behind decisions.
3. Prototype together to pressure test ideas.
4. Invite opinions. Bring other ideas to life.
5. Check your ego. The user doesn't care who was "right".

Stop pointing fingers. Start building bridges.

Font localisation issues (in particular for Bulgarian Cyrillic 🇧🇬) have been reported on and off since 2021 from the Bulgarian design community. 

You say it’s on your radar... 
You say you are aware of it…
You say it's a feature limitation requiring a medium amount of effort…with no commitment on timeline

Here’s the thing.
Enabling community to use their native language is NOT a Feature! It's respecting cultural and linguistic diversity and building Dignity! 
Language, in any form - written, verbal, gestural - is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, tied to our identities, connecting us to family, society, heritage, knowledge.  

And for a digital tool serving design communities across the globe 🌍, it’s commitment to creating responsible and inclusive tech where no one is left behind! 

Let’s start talking more about impact and inclusion, than just effort 🫶

I am proud to announce that I have used my own software, Sign-Speak’s sign language recognition and Avatar application, to go to a bank, car dealership, and to do my groceries CONSECUTIVELY. Yes, I know, many of you will not believe it until you see it. I agree with that. But this is a moment I have dreamed of for the past years along with my co-founders, the brilliant co-creators Nicholas Wilkins and Yamillet Payano. 

Thank you Brian Hertneky for believing in this vision and joining as the partnership guru. Let me tell you guys, Each time, as an ASL signer, I was able to communicate with a random hearing person through the power of our software. And then as they spoke, a signing avatar signed back to me in ASL. I did not need to write/text back and forth or play Charades. The entire conversation was seamless. This moment would also not be possible without the countless Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who have given us their time to provide feedback! You guys are amazing and I can’t wait to continue building alongside my community. To show that innovation runs through our veins! 

This has been a long time coming and I could not thank enough the amazing Sign-Speak team who have gone above and beyond to bring a long-promised technology to existence.  While this is not the end of the road, it sure is a moment to celebrate for me. Wow, all the sacrifices made are paying off.

This might be a hot take, but I think it needs to be said.

If you’re on the market right now after a layoff and struggling to find work, there’s one thing I hope you’ll keep in mind:

It’s not you, it’s them.

In my view, the way that a lot of people were let go over the last year is reprehensible.

Having access turned off in the morning before a person even wakes up and then finding out they’ve been let go by a Nest or Alexa is not the right way to treat workers and build a business.

It’s always been my belief that better teams create better products, and that begins with respect, compassion, and kindness.

This is an interesting (and terrible) time to be on the market. I think it’s even worse today than it was back in 2008.

But I hope that things will begin to turn around soon and that workers might find themselves better situated than before.

New possibilities are opening up in innovation, especially in areas like space, VR, and AR.

And there’s a strong case for workers demanding to be treated better.

I think it’s time they do.
