Verizon media established go90 as a mobile competitor to Hulu and Netflix in late 2015.  As the head of sports marketing, I managed teams across organic social, email, push notifications,  PR, creative and paid media.   In a year we grew the app to a 1M monthly active users the great majority of them coming from my channels. 

Along the way I did the following: 

📈 Grew the audience of go90, an entertainment app, by creating marketing plans and overseeing paid media budgets that led to the acquisition of over 1 million monthly active users
📈 Worked with customer retention team to create push notification and e-mail strategy for all campaigns
📈 Signed and approved digital marketing sponsorship agreements worth over $20M with external partners such as NFL, BEIN Sports and FC Barcelona

I could be defined as eclectic:  In college, I was a philosophy major who minored in computer science and almost quit both to pursue film.  I still dream about a career as a movie reviewer. 

My career is similar.  I started in finance, then went on to become a product manager, and finally settled as a marketer for the last decade.  However, not before having a small grocery store for a period of seven years!

The outcome is this: My approach to marketing mirrors my approach to life. I understand that the task extends beyond just creating awareness. The message serves as an invitation to step into the store, but it's inside where the real effort to secure a sale starts.

I work best using data to align with colleagues and believe that connection greatly increases business results.

I prefer to work with leaders who are willing to take risks to grow the pie and where I can innovate without losing sight of fundamentals.  

As I move forward in my career, I am interested in both growing as an individual and a leader and also having a positive impact on those whom I lead and my overall environment.

🚨Building in Public Alert: Walking away is hard 🚨
A few weeks ago, I had to let go of a client

They were my absolute favorite to work with 
Their product was and is amazing

However, after digging into their budget,
Looking at their infrastructure 
Their speed of product development 

They weren't quite ready for my services

Unfortunately, this was not something I was able to fully discover during the pitching process 

So I was honest: 
I let them know it was too early for a fractional executive
I called a few of my marketing friends/agencies
And gave the client other (and cheaper) options that were a better fit 
(Including staying with me at my higher rate but that I still wouldn’t recommend it)

Further honesty (but keep this between you and I dear reader)

This was hella difficult
I can only take a few clients at a time
So, each ONE MATTERS 

And yet,

It is important to establish myself as an ethical operator
I want to add the most value, and sometimes that means making the recommendation to remove myself from the equation

The client thought about it.
And moved forward with less support

I thought they would be pissed but the lesson helped us further cement our friendship and we found another way for me to stay involved with the company

While complicated

Ultimately, I am happy I get to make these kinds of decisions.

Rarely do those words come together to describe an event

While a professional event, the amount of TRUE camaraderie I had in this space was by far better than most conferences I have attended

Navigating the future of live events to stay ahead 
(this is what the top 1% are doing 👇🏾)

I recently attended Dreamdata NYC's event, and tomorrow I'm heading out to Austin for Spryng, an event hosted by Wynter

After investing millions in event marketing for my brands, I found it beneficial to take a step back and observe the practices yielding success for other teams.

Here's what I have learned:

𝟭. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁
Understand that a well-marketed event elevates your brand
— VIP Dinner Parties the night before (at Spryng) 
—Slack group invitations ( Goldenhour)
— Influencers/creators on LinkedIn motivated to promote the party (Goldenhour)

𝟮. 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁
Work hard to build relationships 
— Create a community around your mission by learning attendee's problems and trying to solve them (at the Dreamdata event I wanted to make sure I understood how they tracked events as part of the funnel for my own purposes)
— Showcase your expertise: share valuable insights, not just sales pitches
— Host workshops that solve real problems for your audience
— If you want to encourage honesty, forget about recording 

𝟯.  𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁
— Follow-up is key to converting interest into action
— Wrong: "Thanks for coming" emails that lead nowhere
— Right: Tailored follow-ups that address specific interests expressed during the event

More importantly, understand that it may take a while for a sale/conversion to take place.  Especially for higher priced products, the sales for next year begin to take place today at these events!

5 Exciting Ideas of What's Working in 2024 to Grow Your Business👇🏾

Last week, I moderated a panel of about 10 agencies at Spryng

This is what they told me is working for them on the acquisition:

1.  LinkedIn Ads:  Everyone preached patience and the efficiency of Thought Leadership ads.  Interestingly enough not one agency mentioned inbound from regular LinkedIn posting though Adam Robinson had a big talk about this during the conference. My thought: It is easier said than done at scale. 

2. Podcasts:  Podcasts are both a good way to talk directly to your ICP as well as have more authentic content.  No one mentioned having great reach or distribution but as a method to have great conversations that show expertise and/or add value.  Bigger agencies/companies scoff at the value of this but when the thought leader of your ICP shows up on your channel it creates $$$

3. Partnerships:  Tyler Jordan is beginning to come into pitches together with other agencies.   Many use it as a growth mechanism and are thinking of further formalizing this channel.  Very efficient.  Some companies are now doing events together. 

4. Lunch and Learn:  Mixing customers with prospects and adding value through education.  Some do it through zoom but others are doing it live.  Lunch and dinners are also possible.

Did I miss anything?

Going to market in 2024 is no joke
Less budget, less money, and less people

Here's what to do differently:

1.  𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: Mid-size companies got less investment and less customers in 2023.  The effect was less muted for enterprises and SMBs.   

I recently met with a B2B company that quickly spun up a $5K product to serve SMBs literally 1/4 of the price of their average sale but they sold enough of those to keep things afloat.  Now they plan to expand those accounts while they serve one or two big enterprise whales.

2.  𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:  Product, marketing and sales should be working together at all times.  You can't turn the ship around by expecting one function to do the work for all.

Monthly meetings attended by the founder/CEO where each function doesn't just detail their wins but their cross collaboration should be par for the course. 

3.  𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀:  Don't just market to them.  Do podcasts, in-person events, coffee once a week,etc.  Learn about their pains.  Stop the transactional approach 

𝟰.  𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: A rising tide lifts all boats. partner with other companies and refer as needed.   

5.  𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱:  Go to your existing and prior customers.   If they know, like and trust you then they should be your biggest champions.

All of the above reads easy....but yet...most companies don't have in place. 

What else should I add?

On my last batch of sales calls, founders came to me asking about:

1) More ads
2)More customers 

What I rarely hear them asking:

What is the most efficient way to grow? 

This is a playbook I learned from Drew Sanocki and today bringing it back inspired by a conversation with Vivek M. George.  

Here are the three levers I use outside of advertising to create growth:

𝟭) 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟯𝟬%

You can make each sale be more valuable by either increasing pricing or bundling other items/services (do you want fries with that?)  

Once a customer trusts you to buy, you can make each sale count that much more by adding services/products that make sense for them. 

𝟮) 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟯𝟬%

If you have an e-commerce focus on getting your customers to come back.  

They already know you, and hopefully like your brand. 

If you have a service business focus on expanding your level of services. 

Tactics here could be as varied as using e-mail for customer offers or if a service business, lunch and learns solely for customers. 


𝟯) 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟯𝟬%

This is what most founders want to chat about and they are right to focus on this.  But if your business is fairly advanced, to double your revenue YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FOCUS HERE.


So there you go 30% X 30% X 30% = 220% increase 

Is not all about more ads or new channels. 

Strategy should go first!

The 5 trends, I am seeing in growth through the last quarter 👇🏽

1.  𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝟮𝗖: Creative testing is not just nice to have but a must.  On demand, graphic designers able to create "performance" creative (different than pretty brand/advertising creative) are REQUIRED.  Facebook is very much alive as a channel but the work is shifting to creative testing vs working on targeting/campaign structure.   

2. 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀:  I have been focusing on fintech.  State of the economy drives a lot of what is happening here.  Interest rates go up: Not as many mortgages.  Markets tank: An increase on users who buy the dip.   I am having teams modify messages AND in-app features to take advantage of this. For your vertical think-through, how does the state of the world affect your customers?  (EG If I were working on an AI for Lawyers product, I would so use the FTC release on employee contracts to gain customers)  

3.  𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝟮𝗕: A lot of effort is going into better positioning and clearer messaging.  The earlier you are in your journey, the more you should say what you do and not just the outcome of your product or service.

4.  𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁:  I have seen the most gains in AI on assisting folks with content.  Editing video has also seen huge gains.  However, AI is not quite ready to replace content creators or anyone. 

5.  𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀:  Seems pretty easy but most founders have an issue here.   Instead of acquisition, work on reducing product fiction.
