I’m connected with at least 3 leaders who took new roles in the last 6 months where there was, let’s say “overstating” of runway.  Yes, their due diligence was solid. 

Folks, revenue leaders aren’t miracle workers and they can’t make sound decisions without all the facts.

When I lived in Chicago in my early 20s, told my best friend, all the time to stop talking to strangers on the bus or the train or the mall.  I thought she was crazy.  


Guess what I do all day? 

Talk to strangers! 

Community-ing, Networking, selling or just meeting someone new.  I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

What is an evangelist? 


📣 My definition is someone who will talk favorably about you, your company, your product, or your service without anyone asking them to. 

Having an evangelist strategy and creating evangelists is one of the best marketing strategies. 

❌ And please do not try to tell me this is not scalable. 

Here are three reasons why. 

1. One evangelist shares your company online. That post gets 1000 impressions.  

2. One person speaks to a few colleagues passionately about your services.  They are now warm prospects.  

3) One customer refers a new customer.  The new customer is 4x more likely also to refer. 

Now multiply that by the number of customers you have that you could potentially turn into evangelists. 

We all know word of mouth is very powerful, but do you have an actual strategy?  

💡 Hint - It all begins with a product, service or experience beyond expectation!

For everything below, the question is…

How does this drive revenue through new member acquisition, upsell opportunities, renewal, and retention? 

Programming - mentoring, office hours, workshop, chapter programs, community leadership opportunities.  

❓Will this new “product” increase retention or drive new member acquisition? 

Engagement - logins, event attendance, program participation. 

❓Are you measuring engagement in a way that correlates with revenue? 

Community marketing - based on everything above, what are you highlighting to your members? 

❓Are you even doing this?

Let’s talk about social capital.  



❓First, what exactly is it? 


“Social capital revolves around three dimensions: interconnected networks of relationships between individuals and groups (social ties or social participation), levels of trust that characterize these ties, and resources or benefits that are both gained and transferred by virtue of social ties and social participation.” 


Or simply put, “Social capital can also be thought of as the potential ability to obtain resources, favors, or information from one's personal connections.”

❓Second, why is this important? 

⚪️ If you’re a connector….

You love to connect people and see the outcomes of a good match (business, jobs, friends).  But social capital is a finite resource unless it’s replenished regularly.  

Being a connector gives me great joy but there are times I know I don’t have enough social capital with a person to make a good connection.  And there are times that  I’m unsure that the person I’m introducing will represent me well.  Everytime I make a connection, I’m either depositing or withdrawing from my bank.  So it’s not as easy as, “Hey do you know X, could you introduce me?” 


⚪️ If you are asking for a connection….

Keep everything above in mind.  Have you built up enough social capital with the person you’re asking for a connection.  Hint —> If you haven’t, you run the risk of looking like a pitch slapper.  

If you get connected, tell the connector thanks and maybe include an outcome. Trust me, they’re more likely to entertain your next request AND you just earned some social capital.  **This is the one place I struggle as I forget to loop around with the person, but I’m trying to get better.  

⚪️ Tips! 
- Building your bank account takes years.  - You can’t buy social capital. 
- Start by simply asking what can I do for you at the end of calls or DMs.  
- Execute on what you say you’ll do.  
- Follow up. 
- Always ask for double optin (total pet peeve of mine.)

Interesting results from my poll two weeks ago.  


From a sampling of 94 votes, here are a few things I found interesting. 

Of the folks that said no, 33% were founders/CEOs.  Makes sense! 😁 

Of the folks that said Yes, but there are obstacles, 80% were women (compared to 70% in the other categories).  🤔 Hmmmm. 

Obstacles from the comments. 

1️⃣ Some fractional/consulting roles, upon further investigation, look like full-time roles, which negates some of the lifestyle benefits that people desire. 

2️⃣ People don't know where to start.  

I totally understand 2️⃣ because that's how I felt when I started out. 

Fortunately, I had a robust network of other fractional executives and consultants to lean on for advice and counsel.  

I'm still interested in hearing more obstacles that keep folks from monetizing their expertise outside their W2, so feel free to add your thoughts in the comments.
