Once I turned 40 I realized I wasted a lot of time chasing titles and comp packages. The biggest thing holding me back was I'm not wired to be an employee. I was fortunate in my 20s to have autonomy, managing the PNL of an eight figure business and turn it around after a disgruntled manager let things fall apart on his way out. I managed to lead a second turnaround after that in B2B closing 6-8 figure deals. But once Covid hit, I got laid off and leveraged LinkedIn to break into tech. They tried to pigeon hole me in mostly just sales roles or leadership with not much authority over meaningful budget. After a handful of companies ran into funding issues, I did end up at a publicly traded company just to quickly realize this was not the path for me. I wasn't going to put the company before my family and realized I needed to make a big change. I had a friend in real estate doing extraordinarily well. I quit my secure job and I went to work for commission only to learn the business. There's been a lot of ups and downs, and since then I've launched my own real estate business, briefly a cleaning company that I sold, and now partnered back with my mentor to launch a real estate community to help those learn the same. I am no longer money focused as my priority is building a life around being present with my wife and kids and only doing work I enjoy. While I don't want to be broke. I realized my family would rather have me be present physically, mentally, and emotionally over having a larger house, more stuff and even more vacations. It's a new path I'm walking and still learning every day and hope to help others do the same. Fortunately I realized this with my daughters being 10 and 6. Hoping to inspire others to realize the same before it's too late. I do work with those one on one from career transition, prioritizing family, or even launching their own business.
