To understand my Sales Rebellion, first you need to hear and acknowledge the role my Father played in my life. 

His legacy is one of integrity, perseverance, and service to others. 

I spent my life in the shadow of one of the greatest men to ever walk this earth and I am eternally grateful for his amazing example. 

I realized my initial calling in the Technology world through his business and also just how much fun I had being in a sales role.

You might have heard rumors of me...back when they called me, The Copier Warrior.

in 2017 I moved on from the company I had represented for my entire career in sales, I made this decision after my Dad’s passing (see my shared articles for the saddest story I have ever told). 

I stayed in the copier industry for 2 more years before launching my Rebellion.

Then, in 2019, The Sales Rebellion was born. My conquest of changing the game has expanded beyond my role as an individual contributor in the sales world. Now I am a sales trainer, teaching the masses (both individuals and entire companies) how to choose legendary for their sales career. 

No longer will the mediocre rule throughout our profession. It is time for a Sales Rebellion to rise.

They say time heals all wounds but they’re wrong.

Every year gets harder than the last when you were loved so deeply that it cannot be replaced.

But, I’m grateful for what my Dad was and continues to be to me.

A man who dearly loved and honored his wife.

A man who made it home to see his kids every day no matter what.

A man who took me on a date night once a month, no excuses.

The guy who taught me how to play sports.

The guy who loved me no matter what I would become or who I was at the time.

The one who believed in me when nobody else would.

I remember going to the baseball field and my Dad tossing me a bucket of balls until the sun went down.

I remember my Dad coming up the driveway and honking his horn to let us know he was home and we would get so excited!

I remember my Dad taking me fishing.

I remember my Dad taking me to buy new parts for my skateboard.

I remember my Dad buying me my first guitar.

I remember how much my Dad loved me.

An unconditional love.

He taught me how to be human.

He taught me how to lead.

He taught me how to love.

He taught me the real meaning of “being a man.”

I can’t repay him but I can honor his legacy.

Dad…

I can still hear your voice when I sit and think about our conversations.

I can still see your face when I close my eyes and remember you.

Thank you for guiding me, loving me, leading me, and being an inspiration on my life.

Thank you for inspiring me to start The Sales Rebellion.

I made a $46,000.00 commission check and spent $10,000.00 of it immediately after it hit my bank… What I bought has always been my little secret until this post.

The customer was one of my favorites

One that took me 4 years to earn

I left some of the most outrageous marketing drops for them and cultivated a very close relationship with the decision makers

In the midst of that relationship I learned about things that were very important to them

People they were close to

Places that were near and dear to them

A general sense of what community meant to them…

It was around the end of the year when they decided to move forward with me

And there was a conversation at the office about a family in need

A single mom who had lost her husband in the war in Afghanistan

She had 5 kids…

And he was the sole income provider due to her having to care for her mother who was very old and very ill - who lived with them.

The funeral was in Arlington and she had no money and no way of making it

People were donating a few dollars around the office the day we were doing the delivery

So I did some digging

I figured out where I could anonymously donate and that lead me back to a church…

I visited that church the next day around 4pm thinking I could basically sneak in and sneak out

I asked for the pastor then explained why I was there, with $10,000 cash… (sketchy LOL)

Well, they misunderstood me and went and got the lady!

I had not planned for that but when she came out I felt a little embarrassed and expressed that… “I was just trying to leave this for you as I heard about what’s been going on in your life and you seem to have made a great impact on those in your community as I heard people were raising money for you from the kindness of their own hearts.”

She asked me my name and I declined

I said “I have worked really hard to be in a financial position to be able to make a positive impact on people without them needing to know who I am.”

I just want you to feel love and know that you’re not alone…

We had tears together and I got a big old hug!

It was one of the best purchases I ever made off of a commission check.

Remember Rebels, you were called to change the world

17 years ago today I married the love of my life.

When I met her, I knew for certain she was the one…

My friends thought I was crazy that 2 days later we were dating.

They’d see us holding hands at the mall or snuggled up on a couch and they all reacted the same way…

“You act like you’ve been with her for years”

When it had only been weeks.

I knew then just like I know now.

There’s never been something better that’s happened to me than her.

She has stuck with me through my darkest days

She has even saved me from my own self

They say that the average marriage last 7-8 years and that about 50% of first marriages end in divorce.

But what they don’t tell you is that it is extremely hard work to stay together with someone you love unconditionally.

It’s a crazy thought, but it’s a fact.

Commitment is hard.

Period.

No matter how in love you are or how incredible everything will seem to be at times.

It takes a lot of hard work, diligence, compassion and loyalty to keep your marriage happy.

You could compare it to a lot of things in life.

How so many people just simply give up

They stop building their brand because they’re burnt out.

Or leave that job they’ve had for so long because it just doesn’t do it for them anymore.

We don’t weather storms

We don’t fight for something more

We instead do what’s “easy” on us

And look it takes two in the instance of marriage or relationships to make things work, without a doubt…

Which is why I’m so grateful for this woman.

She’s always given me 100% while never compromising who she is.

She’s always met me exactly where I am without and sought to fix our problems instead of perpetuating them with silence or settling.

She is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me without a shadow of a doubt.

I love you baby.

More than words can say.

Thank you for giving me the best life.

Shout out to the greatest email I’ve ever received

The one sales rep who isn’t on the internet complaining about being ghosted…

Instead, they’re just calling people out in their emails to them 😂

For context: This was the first email I saw

The other 6 emails were in my spam folder

Probably because they’re relying too heavily on AI, canned sequencing, and luck.

Here’s a better way to sell for anyone wondering:

👉🏻Detach from the outcome
👉🏻Remove your emotions
👉🏻Rid yourself of expectations
👉🏻Cause curiosity in your prospect

Create and build out an experience for those you seek to serve

Believe that what you’re doing can change the world but do not lose control when someone else does not buy-into your vision

Build a better reputation 👈🏻

Serve without worrying about whether or not you’ll get anything back in return

Stop being a dick 🤪

Stop trying to force things 💩

Two days before I attempted suicide I was casually hanging out with friends and family

Chatting away

Eating and drinking

Speaking meaningless words

Nothing on my mind but leaving this world

Weeks leading up to my attempted suicide you would find me running meetings with prospects and clients

Smiling and presenting

Giving them great experiences

Speaking completely meaningless words

Nothing on my mind but getting out of there forever

In my bank account, you’d find financial freedom for a 27 year old kid.

In my sales life you’d see me literally defying the odds and holding the crown.

In my personal life you’d see hundreds of people at my weekend bbq’s laughing and enjoying life.

Deep in my soul you’d find nothing but emptiness

Deep in my mind you’d find a battle waging

Deep in my being you’d find someone else

And I’m writing this for you, the one reading this post who has it all yet holds onto nothing…

There is more to life than meets the eye, there is more to life than material things, there is more to life than money and power.

There is purpose

There is happiness

There is that thing you’re looking for…

I found it the hard way and through a moment of divinity that lead to my door opening and the skeletons falling out all at once.

And I am grateful to God every single day for that.

If you’re in sales and struggling, feeling like the words you read above are exactly who you are.

If you’re dealing with depression and a sadness unlike any other.

If you’re struggling with anxiety and feeling lost.

I want you to know, I love you.

And I’m not the only one.

Imagine being in sales and working for leaders who judge you for wanting a decent base salary

Then imagine those same leaders tell you to spend 8 hours every day achieving outdated metrics

Then you win a big deal and they sit down to go over all the changes they’ve decided to make to the comp plan because it’s not fair for the company to pay you that much

Today he is 6 years old and already accomplished the following:

-Traveled to 14 states in the US
-Stayed in or explored 150+ cities
-Seen a soccer game at home and away
-Seen over 100+ important & historical sites
-Swam in the Atlantic from 10 different beaches
-Ate at 30+ different donut shops (important 😂)

He’s learned about the ecosystem and biology hands on in the Smokey Mountains

He’s traversed the Big Apple on the subway and walked for blocks at a time to see all the sights

He’s stood in places that very few people have ever stood in the history of the US

He’s learning life, discipline, loyalty, happiness and success in a way that very few people learn…

I’m proud of him

I’m in love with him

I greatly enjoy life with him

And I couldn’t ask for a better first born…

To my legacy, happy birthday.

Here’s my morning routine the year I first cracked $300,000 in earnings as a top sales producer:

⏰Wake up - 4:30am
Sit in the bathroom with the shower going while I sat on the floor crying trying to figure out why I felt so depressed and ashamed

🍵Get breakfast - 5:15am
I would finally leave the bathroom around this time and prep my shake for breakfast that I wouldn’t even drink because I was so miserable

🚘Drive to work - 5:30am
I would skip the workout I woke up for about this time and just start my 50 minute drive to the office hoping if I got to work I’d feel better

🌥️Start my day - 6:20am
I would immerse myself into my sales walk and let it consume me as my identity to try and mask the terrible things I was feeling

All the ice baths in the world won’t fix your problems 👈🏻

Neither will the mediation, the green drink, the journaling, the yoga, the book club, the money, the work, whatever you have subscribed to as a routine to “make you better.”

The years of my greatest financial successes as a sales rep were some of the hardest

On my marriage

On my friendships

On my mental health

What made me sell so much was an internal motivation to beat my problems but ultimately, I was only masking them.

That’s what your fancy morning routine can lead to as well.

Masking the real problems.

Pretending to be better.

Keeping yourself silent.

I know it was for me and ultimately it lead to me literally pretending to do it every morning.

Dear salespeople of LinkedIn who are passively promoting lying as a healthy way to set appointments or make sales…

You’re ruining the profession.

Dear salespeople of LinkedIn who are constantly telling people to “try this” in your content but you’ve literally never done it yourself…

You’re lame.

Dear sales gurus of LinkedIn who are giving away $5,000 courses on cold calling for absolutely no charge…

We see what you’re actually doing.

It’s amazing to me how much of the sales world that is “looked up to” in the year 2022 lie and deceive in their outreach, their follow-up and their closing tactics.

Double-tap then tell them “oh I was just going to leave a voicemail because I forgot on the first call.”

LOL

That’s a “move” you are purposefully using and it’s deceitful.

It’s incredible to me how many folks out there are giving advice on sales who literally haven’t sold anything in decades.

Or, they’re basically famous so their sales cycle is much different than a kid getting into SaaS selling a brand new idea to the marketplace.

The advice sucks anyway.

But what brand new salesperson is going to know that it’s sucks?

They’ll just continue to stumble because of it instead.

Breeding failure and profiting from it.

It’s absolutely nuts to me that there are people out there “giving away” sales training and actually fooling people into it.

Meanwhile that person has a masters degree in marketing and never had a marketing job.

Let alone any sales experience.

Deception at its finest.

This is why The Sales Rebellion exists!

We do not promote deceit or manipulation within our sales framework that’s taught to our students.

We do not teach people to do something we’ve not done ourselves.

We do not manipulate with “free offers” about things we don’t actually have experience in or understand well.

Instead…

We built a sales community of individuals from SDRs in their first year, to full cycle sales reps who have 20 years experience that can network and learn from one another.

We created a framework for salespeople of all shapes and sizes to learn from that is more than a bunch of stereotypical “sales advice” you can just get off the Internet.

We designed go to market strategies that you’ll never find using the corporate or popular sales trainings of today.

Ultimately we are a movement!

We are made up of salespeople tired of “selling” for the wrong reasons

We are people who seek to serve others not force them to buy

She told us: “we have competing proposals and I need you to justify why we should choose yours.”

On top of that, when we arrived, our contact seemed distant and very closed off to sharing info with us.

My Dad figured it was because someone drastically undercut him on price

This is the way the copier world works…

“Do what it takes to get the sale” mentality.

Everything revolving around price as the strategy.

He stayed patient and just asked questions centered around what we were accomplishing for the client and what gaps or indiscretions she was experiencing between proposals

And stayed away from price altogether

About halfway through the meeting

Our contact broke down a little

She was having a hard time

And since my Dad put on his human hat instead of his sales hat…

And treated this women with respect and dignity and didn’t focus soly on the “deal”

He wasn’t transactional with her 

He was genuine and authentic

And in turn…

She told us that she’d been diagnosed with cancer the day before and was still mentally getting through the news.

My Dad stopped the meeting and asked:

“May I please pray over you.”

It was a beautiful moment and this same woman was also at my Dad’s funeral several years later when we lost him to cancer.

The sale is temporary, Rebels.

What you build with your community is forever.

Seek to build your legacy while being more than just a fast talking head slanging deals left and right…

Become a legend instead.

Do not take a sales role at a company that doesn’t have a comp plan in place

Or take a sales role at a job where you don’t fully understand the comp plan that’s in place

And if you’re a leader…

And you’re saying things to future sales employees like “don’t worry, you’ll get paid”

That’s not good enough.

If you’re doing things like asking the rep(s) to focus on net new logos/business… Without a comp plan…

You’re nuts 👈🏻

Literally nuts 👍🏻

You’re in sales, it’s a job where the majority of the compensation should be based around performance.

Don’t walk into a role blindly, not fully understanding how your performance will achieve the promised rewards.

While a focus on servant leadership is equally important…

Understanding how you help others in need of the product or service you sell

Do. Not. Forget. Yourself.

I promise you that these things will cause a problem for you at some point

They will cause resentment

And you will not be able to serve effectively because of it

You might even get out of sales altogether

Or end up constantly being on defense with your employer or any employer you and up at from there…

This is not Rebellious.

Remember, nobody owes you anything.

In order to achieve and accomplish your own personal goals you have to understand this part of your sales walk like the back of your hand.

You’re working one of the hardest jobs in the world, don’t walk the path aimlessly or misunderstanding how to build your legacy within it.

🪪 Send a wallet with a few photos of you and your prospect photoshopped together doing stuff like winning an MLS Cup, a license that certifies them in using your product, some currency that makes them laugh their butt off and a few other Rebellious things that I’m not gonna tell you in this post.

Here are the side effects of actually giving a sh*t about people when you’re in a sales role:

You’ll build a solid reputation

You’ll feel more satisfied with every interaction

You’ll meet friends and build un-breakable bonds

You’ll not just “earn trust” from people… You’ll earn their loyalty

You’ll sell more stuff because people will naturally refer business to you

You’ll be able to sleep better

You’ll have less stress and anxiety

You’ll go to birthday parties, life celebrations, promotion dinners, the occasional Thanksgiving office potluck…

…Baptisms, double dinner dates, office happy hours… You get the point!

You’ll make friends.

It’s pretty much just that simple.

Except for the fact that you’ve got to work for it.

It’s not as easy as meeting at the playground and taking off like a rocket ship.

You have to be committed to excellence.

You have to put in the time and effort.

You have to care!

And you should.

If you are choosing to take a sales role so you can dial and pitch people, send mass emails about your product and service, and just generally try to get something out of every interaction (like a sale) - you’re going to end up living in that middle ground between greatness and failure.

I’m not saying that magically you’re not going to get hung up on anymore.

Or told “not interested”

Or struggle to hit quota now and then

Or feel like nothing is going your way

This is a natural part of sales, the part where hard work and perseverant mindsets always prevail.

But why not put those actions into place alongside an attitude of love?

Why not start caring about the person on the other side of the phone?

Why just play the numbers game and try to get really lucky every day?

Why not?

Quit letting the pundits have their way

Quit listening to the status quo of sales

Quit living in mediocrity

Take a chance on yourself, on others, on a real legacy.

Start choosing to show up differently

Start choosing to give experiences

Start building relationship that transcend the transaction

Start becoming who you were called to be, Rebel.
