      U.S. streaming services are expected to spend upwards of $115Bn on programming this year... and while tech valuations are down, the opposite is true for content studios. Here's why investors (& networks) are investing billions ⬇️ 📽️ My newsletter dives in-depth on 3 ways studios like Hello Sunshine , A24, pocket.watch and Shondaland are innovating to create IP-led opportunities (read here: https://lnkd.in/emT5wb7H), but first lets detail why this space is so hot in 2023. Global content spending for Netflix was $16.84Bn last year... and their Top 4 most watched shows? All Netflix Originals like Squid Game, Stranger Things, Wednesday, Dahmer, Bridgerton, and more. With increased competition from streaming players like Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, NBC's Peacock... content differentiation is a must, and networks are spending big $$$ to develop the best original shows. And investors realize the opportunity as billions are poured into content studios. Just look at Blackstone-owned Candle Media, which acquired Reese Witherspoon's production company Hello Sunshine for $900M, Moonbug Entertainment (the studio behind CoComelon) for $3Bn, and more. In a world where just 3.4% of independent films in the U.S. made a profit over the past two decades, there's an innate focus on premium content. AND an opportunity to take IP to new heights through the creation of brands / experiences, and doing it in a community-led way. A24 created Gen Z makeup brand Half Magic Beauty to capitalize on the success of Euphoria in an authentic way... and in a world where fans have to wait 2+ years for Season 3, this is a genius way to continue to engage fans. pocket.watch is turning kid content creators into business empires like Ryan's World. 9-yr-old Ryan Kaji is estimated to have earned $29.5 million from his YouTube channel in 2020. In that same year, it’s estimated he earned $200 million (almost 7x) from Ryan’s World branded toys, clothing, and TV deals. I'm a big believer that big exits in this space will come from creators AND studios. Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine uses Reese's Book Club (2.5M followers on IG) to develop new films in a community-led way, letting the book club picks and reception validate the production of new films. Just look at the success of Where The Crawdads Sing, grossing $140M at the box office on a $24M budget. Investors... pay attention to this space. Curious if you agree!           Don’t worry darling is literally free to me on HBO max and I still cannot bring myself to watch it. It’s like when you hear your cat throwing up and know you HAVE to go locate and clean up the vomit but really do not want to.

          How to destroy 87 years of brand value overnight. Take HBO Max, combine it with Discovery+ and call the new service Max. Not HBO Max, not Discovery Max, just Max. Max? You really don't have to be in marketing to understand how ill thought out this name change is. Not since Netflix spun out Qwikster, have we had such an awful idea for a new brand name. There has to be some kind of power/legal play that I don't see. I get trying to preserve the brand value of HBO but this is just putting a nail in the coffin in my mind to the new streaming service.

            HBO Max and Netflix are setting bad precedents for TV and entertainment. It is disappointing that an industry that benefited from out-of-the-box thinking and is designed for inclusivity treats creators and their artwork as disposable 💔

                𝗔𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝟮.𝟮 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻!! In first place, Magic Mike’s last dance opened with just 8.2 Million (worldwide 18.6). Not a good sign for a movie that cost over 40 Million to produce. Considering the numbers and the (not good) reviews, I think it will come to HBOmax pretty soon. In second place, Avatar: The Way of Water grossed another 6.9 Million (-39%) for a domestic total of 647 Million. Worldwide the movie crossed 2.21 Billion!! WOW WOW WOW! In third place, Titanic re-release (25TH anniversary) grossed 6.4 Million. Nice! The movie also grossed an additional 15.9 Million overseas for a worldwide total of 2.217 Billion. In fourth place, 80 for brady grossed another 6 Million (-53%) for a domestic total of 24.9 Million In fifth place, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish still holds well. The movie grossed 5.5 Million (-30%) for a domestic total of 158.4 Million. Worldwide around 393 Million. Great! But next week… Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantomania is coming! Early estimates suggest an opening around 120 Million in its 4-day weekend. So… Let’s see!!!
