Dear LinkedIn Community, I normally do not post about politics. On a recent post I was called a racist because I stated I was happy that we have a person of color in the VP seat. Why? Because I am a woman of color. I am happy that I can show my child that people of color can be in the highest seat in the United States of America. My happiness is not just because she is of color. It is because she is a woman, she is an immigrant, she is Asian and she is qualified. This does not make me racist when I believe that all people should be able to get to the top as long as they have the qualifications. In just 2 weeks it will be 1 year since I took a leap of faith and traded my executive full-time job for the advising world. Where did the time go? In the beginning, I was so stressed about the pipeline, finances, my ability to succeed, my happiness... In the end, it has been one of my best career decisions (although don't count me out of FT market just yet!). Here is the teardown of my learnings so far: + I get to *pick whom I work with*. + No more politics. I can focus on getting sh!t done. + My learning curve is on a hockey-stick growth trajectory. I haven't felt this challenged for years. + Patterns, patterns, patterns! Instead of developing depth in one company, I get to sample many. This shortcuts many years of experience. + Seeing my advising companies/contacts succeed is soo rewarding. + Flexibility (although I always oversubscribe :) -/+ Context switching is hard. Different teams, customers, and products stretch my brain to its limits. But I LOVE IT. - I miss being part of the team. My work family. Advising life is isolating. - Lack of accountability. I can influence, but I don't *own* anything. - I still feel imposter syndrome. I guess that just never goes away.

Yesterday, Basecamp announced a new ban on discussions about social issues or politics on its internal company platform. It's an unusual move in the current landscape, where conversations about #Diversity, #Equity and #Inclusion have only become more prevalent. But this is nothing new. Corporations have had de facto policies like these all the way into the early 2010s, and for that reason, we have an abundance of research showing just what happens when companies pull a Basecamp: ❌ Marginalized communities experience psychological disengagement, resulting in lower productivity and higher turnover.¹ 🧠 Privileged communities exhibit greater bias against members of marginalized communities.² 💔 Interpersonal and institutional discrimination increases due to reduced empathy and increased justification of inequality.³ You can sum up the research with this one sentence: "Paradoxically, emphasizing minimization of group differences reinforces majority dominance and minority marginalization."⁴ Industries evolved beyond this model because it didn't work. It's not hard to name what Basecamp has done with this move: REGRESSED. If your company wants at all to meet the needs of a more diverse, more socially conscious future, don't follow this example.

Every place I have worked has had some form of office politics.   My view has evolved. Today, I am an agnostic when it comes to the concept of office politics.   When I worked for companies, I knew it was there and I learned how to play by the rules (as long as those rules were not unethical or detrimental).   However, I never tried to rely on it as a means to move my career along.   I knew it was there and needed to be mindful.   If office politics is a distraction for you, consider the following: * Accept it will be a part of corporate life. * Make it a positive in your approach. * Use it to lift people up and not tear them down. * Highlight the good that you have seen others do. * Be a team player. * Ask if you can help and ask for help. * Show yourself as positively proactive and not negatively reactive. * Maintain the highest ethical and moral standards.   Office politics are there, the way you choose to behave and perform will define if the politics are positive or negative to you.   Take a look in the comments for all the free resources available to help you with your productivity and time management. #personaldevelopment #timemanagement #management #office #officepolitics #productivity #career #team
