💳 How can the way we pay have an impact on the planet? 🌍 🤔 I've been invited to reflect on that topic on the Sustainable Payments panel at the Merchant Payments Ecosystem in Berlin 🇩🇪 I'll be in stellar company alongside Stephen King - Visa, Dan Graf - earthchain and Sam Langsford - IKEA, with discussion expertly moderated by Helen Owen. We'll explain how facilitating simple changes in behaviour can create enriched experiences for your customers - and have a tangible, positive environmental impact. 🌱 📅 The event kicks off in just under a fortnight - so make a diary note for 13:15 on the opening day, Tuesday 28th March, I'd love to see you there. #sustainability #retail #fintech #payments #mpecosystem #MPE2023 Receiptable

I was asked this week, "What is a simple piece of advice for any marketer starting their career?" My answer was - Don't wait to have a final result before bringing your manager in 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 It’s equally, if not more important to show your manager the process. This helps trigger new thoughts and ideas rather than trying to work them in once the cake is fully-baked 🎂 You've heard about the Ikea effect 🪑 - if you learn to build your ideas together with your manager and keep them in the loop ✅ They can give you the frameworks & feedback (and sometimes even resources!) to elevate your ideas ✅ It increases joint ownership of the results. Also - it’s a lot harder emotionally to get people go back to change a completed project - you've heard of this with the sunk-cost fallacy. I find that our campaigns that have the strongest hooks and clearest propositions are the ones that have looped our marketing managers in early. Sometimes it's as simple as “Hey, here’s what I’m thinking, and here’s how I’m thinking we should go about it and why - what do you think?” during your check-ins - that could really help the end result. 💡

What’s been happening in retail this week? · Asda and self-driving car AI developer Wayve launched Britain's largest autonomous grocery delivery trial. The year-long trial covers a catchment area of 72,000 households in London, where self-driving vehicles will be used to fulfil online orders (accompanied by humans for now!). · This type of tech will play a critical role in replacing drivers in the ambitions to make final mile delivery (and returns) more efficient. · Aldi UK and Lidl GB followed Tesco and Sainsbury's lead in cutting the price of milk by at least 5p. The discounters have reduced the cost of their four-pint own-brand milk to £1.55, matching their rivals. · Co-op is set to invest over £240m into its membership model in a bid to cut prices for customers - following the loyalty play of others. · Superdrug and Savers Health Home & Beauty employees can now use Wagestream, a financial wellbeing app that allows them to track earnings, budget, save, and choose when they get paid. Additionally, a DigiCare app will launch this summer, giving employees access to free digital GP and mental health and nutritional consultations, second medical opinions, and an annual health check. · Superdrug is set to invest in 25 new stores this year, totalling 570. 70 existing stores will additionally be revamped under the Sustainable Store Scheme, ensuring sites are eco-conscious in everything from design to energy-saving and waste management. · IKEA is investing £4.5m to install almost 200 charging points for electric delivery vehicles across the country, with 53 of them offering rapid charging. · Amazon launched a free European Expansion Accelerator initiative to help professional selling partners extend their business to its UK and European marketplaces. · TikTok Shop UK announced a partnership with fulfilment provider Huboo to handle large order volumes for UK-based sellers. · LVMH recorded revenue of £18.5bn in its first quarter, 17% higher than the same period last year. The retail group reported an 18% rise in revenue for its fashion and leather goods business group during the period, as well as an 11% increase in revenue for the Christian Dior Couture brand. ·  What this space as LVMH and other mega-brands ramp up their direct-to-consumer strategies with increasing purpose. · Dunelm recorded a 6% YoY rise in total sales to £423m for the 13 weeks to 1 April, citing its winter sale and a positive response to its spring range as reasons for the increase. Both online and in-store sales grew, with digital sales accounting for 36% of the total in the quarter. · Bensons for Beds achieved a 9% rise in sales in the first quarter to March. The company's digital sales also improved with a 32% YoY increase. This is just a selection of news this week. The IKEA secondhand store in Sweden is 2 years into the trial, and it’s profitable. They’re learning every day how best to repair and resell used IKEA items, in order to keep them in circulation for longer. The valuable learnings and user data is then circulated back to the designers to help improve the durability of future product designs so that they can stay in use for longer. Brillaint work team! I can’t wait to visit in a few weeks. inspire circular #circulareconomy #repair #secondhand

8+ months after our relocation: 👇🏻 is still our reality. Still unpacked, these 4 boxes with books sit behind our bedroom door. I see them daily as I walk in and out of our bedroom. Why are they not unpacked? When you live an international life, you tend to have periods where you lack some furniture. Why? ... You might have sold your furniture before the last move, knowing you would not return to the same place. Or the storage fees would be higher than the value of your furniture. ... The furniture in one place does not fit into the new place. ... Or you are only temporarily in a new place until you find something more suitable. All three apply to our situation right now. We have not found the right bookshelf yet so we can unpack these books. 🤔 What? A bookshelf, you might say. Just go to Ikea and get one. So, yes, it might have been easier to go to IKEA and get several individual pieces. But it's not how I live my international life anymore. I now live by 2 principles when it comes to my home: .. 1 - Own less. That means that the furniture we have needs to fit. It's not about buying 5 different pieces. In the case of our bookshelf, we need one big shelf that fits a particular corner of the spare room at a specific height (angled roof). Even Ikea does not have that .. trust me, I got desperate! ... 2 - Buy second-hand if I can. When you've moved so many times and bought furniture only to sell it again a few years later, you realise that no piece is forever. And buying new furniture all the time is not sustainable. So, we purchase second-hand where we can. Why am I telling you this on a random Monday in February? After 8 months, we finally found the perfect size second-hand bookshelf. 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 And now, by adding a couple of extra shelves and a bit of chalk paint, we'll transform it into a beautiful (and unique!) piece for the spare bedroom. Now 🤞 that all books will fit! ❓ What's something you learned to approach (or do) differently because of your international life? #InternationalLife #International #Relocation #Expat #UK ‌

Earlier in January, I had the chance encounter of going to Markitt, a retail store by The IBL Group located at Tipu Sultan. The store layout at Markitt is very similar to that of IKEA in terms of its neat and organized appearance. This makes it easy for customers to navigate the store and find what they are looking for. Additionally, the layout is designed in such a way that it encourages spontaneous buying! The placement of certain products in key areas of the store, such as near the checkout, makes it easy for customers to spot something they may not have come in looking for but decide to buy on a whim. Furthermore, the brand colors and messaging are very aesthetically pleasing and visible throughout the store (something that I have a personal appreciation for - whenever I am looking at any brand) The use of bold and bright colors creates a visually appealing atmosphere that draws customers in! 🫡 Another aspect of the store's layout that contributes to its success is its adherence to retail ergonomics. The store seemed to be designed with the customer in mind, taking into consideration factors such as flow, accessibility, and ease of use. ⭐️ For example, the store is equipped with wide aisles and clearly marked signage, making it easy for customers to move around and find what they need. There is also a small eatery within the store to make the shopping experience more fun and more like an activity rather than a chore! The height of the products placements and them not touching the ceilings was quite an advantage for the not-too-tall folks like me, haha! 🌝 Here are a few pictures from the store! #markitt #branding #retaildesign #storelayout #marketing #communication #design #retailexperience #4ps
